I'm 56...... seen it all, heard it all....and I'm a drummer.... I keep coming back to this young man for inspiration. This, in my opinion, is one of the the absolute best drum covers EVER.
Incredible cover. One of the best live performances from Terry. Lifted this song into god status. This is a great example of how drums can elevate a whole song to another level. I wish I could play like this!
I have no recollection of any other classic song made so much better by a drummer. Terry Williams' live performance was absolutely one of the greatest of all time.
Years back I commented on a Dire Straits Sultans of Swing Alchemy video saying I wish there was a camera feed showing only Terry Williams. Now I've seen it. Amazing.
Excuse my bad english. This version "Alchamy Sultans Of Swing" is one of the world's best songs for all time. You are the highest honor for this song.. No one can take this honor away from you.
Well, it's been at least five years since I first discovered this cover and his channel, and I'd be lying if I said I've watched (with headphones of course) this video a "few times". I play drums (local cover band small stuff), and I come back to it quite often for not only the highly technical parts, but for the sheer Joy of this kid's playing. I was a teenager when this song was on the radio and I always played it (and everything else) VERY LOUD! Everyone, including myself, usually favours what they grew up on, but after hearing this live version sooooo many times, now I actually prefer it to the studio.
I Love Dire Straits, Alchemy is my favourite record all time and Sultans of Swing is the best song in the world. Thanks man for that wonderful performance. Thanks for share that special moment. Sérgio Costa-Portugal
Oh, what a flattering. This cover is too incorrect for your words wil true. DS drummer hi-hat just like living. Its opening in all song. ewanjohn don't do it.
And Ewan isn't wearing the same tee shirt as the original drummer did at this concert. What a fraud eh! Can't you see the dude is having fun with this song!
In this original live performance, Terry Williams hit the true drummer's sweet spot of never being overly attention hungry, but managing to organically catch the listener's attention over and over and over with his awesome fills and power, all of which was 100% in service of the incredible performance by the band as a unit. And this is a great cover of that great performance. A good one to study for sure.
Granted the guitar solo at the end is simply awesome!! Terry hitting the skins harder, faster, with more going on throughout the live version makes this song simply brilliant!! Ewan is so talented.
The amount of work that must have gone into this is incredible! Terry Williams was on fire that night and to faithfully reproduce it, is amazing. Well done!
@@ewancunningham Im a Swansea taxi driver. I see Terry and his wife now and again. Alchemy is the only album he gets any money from. Shame really. He's a legend in Swansea.
Just come across this video and the performance is amazing. Terry Williams gave the song energy and made it his own. You have given me what i think was missed, which is a camera just focused on Terry. Thank you for sharing such a brilliant talent you have👍
Awesome. I'm a drummer too! So personally I can relate to some of the small complexities included in playing that version of the song. Again, such a great cover.
+Alexander Johnson This version has lots of different fills and they are all so fun to play! I'm sure you will agree :-) I loved making this cover. Thank you very much for your comment Alexander! Keep on rockin'
By far the best cover out of the 3 others I've listing to. The others were slow and lacked a whole ton of fills. Excellent or should I say outstanding performance.
This is a perfect example of where the drummer is inside the song pushing it out instead of on the outside pulling at it! Excellent Vic Firth plug in the soft part also :)
I’ve saved this video ‘cause everytime I want to listen and see Sultans of Swing by drum cam I see you like the original! Perfetto! Complimenti! Bravissimo! Sei una forza
Dunno if You will ever read this but i'm pretty sure this Is the best drum cover on the entire internet, it's clean and really well done. Congratulations
Good Job Ewan, but this is the horrible rendition from when Terry Williams joined the group. YUK ! all he did was horrible 4/4 rolls everywhere he could, and destroyed the intimate feel of the Straights. Pick Withers was the original drummer who had a very unique and brilliant feel. he was a great drummer, lovely balanced feel and intricate but subtle little fills, full of taste and some lovely hi-hat work etc. Terry Willimams was just an in-your-face blast it out 4/4 robotic roll everywhere drummer. no finesse, no feel, robotic rolls. yuk. man he sucked. he annoyed me. see if you can find the originals and have a good listen to Pick. you'll be glad you did. anyway good job, your a great drummer.
Hi Jimbo, thanks for the compliments. I must say I am a fan of the original and I like the smooth and subtle drums that Pick recorded on the original. However, the alchemy version of Sultans and that whole concert as a whole is one of my favourite ever live performances and featured a more rocky Dire Straits. I really love the energy the alchemy Sultans of Swing had and this came from Terry's fast paced drumming. In my opinion, not only is it a blast to listen to this 10 minute masterpiece but it is also just extremely fun to play this version on the drums. That is why I covered this version over the original.
+ewanjohncovers that's what this piece is for, in my opinion. just to have fun playing it (i'll never be able to do anything like what you did here though, respect!!). it is thoroughly overloaded. i mean you can't feel the flow, the music. you can just listen to the drums. cool music is made by a band; the drummer's got to know how to get the band ahead for it, together, to make the sound.
MrJamaica650 I mean it's not like Terry covered the entire band...not at all. I can clearly appreciate any lick played by Mark, Alan (keyboards) and the vocals. This for the entire duration of the "Alchemy live", and not this one only. Anyways, I suggest you to check out "Once upon a time in the West", from the same live. In the case you're talking about this specific video, then it's a drum cover, the drummer IS supposed to be louder than the rest of the band. That's what the video is all about. :)
Introduced to Sultans and Alchemy by my late father - this is one of the very few that like the original, makes the hairs on my arms and neck stand on end. Truly brilliant, thank you 👌
Ive been listening to this version for over 30 years ,fantastic job on those fills well done, dont know why there aren't any Terry Williams interviews available on you tube.
Life just isn't fair how can some people be blessed with so much musical talent and me i can barely whistle , excellent drum cover im sure Terry would agree.
Well young man, you are my first stop on the web this morning. My day will go well after seeing your passion and perfection on this wonderful song. Thanks, always!
I was in grade school when this song was released....it brings back so many memories of listening to it at home or when the family was packed in the car on our way to somewhere. How this cover only has 5,700+ likes is beyond me. Well done sir - you absolutely nailed covering this live version of 'Swing. 👍👍👍
This is probably the absolute best cover I've seen of the live high paced version (from Alchemy). I've seen your video hundreds of times so far, and I keep coming back (I also enjoy your other covers, especially Pink Floyd ones). Thank you and good luck with your passion.
