Hi there, Maggie. Please,please do another video for us of the Alchemy live version. At over 10 minutes it is is almost twice as long as the original studio version of 5 minutes or so. This version is very restrained compared to the live performance, in which the final solo seems to go on forever. And check out the drummer too, who is going off, I think the expression is. Plus of course, you get the magic of a live performance! Love from the south coast of England.

Every Dire Straits song is a duet between Mark and his guitar... you have to think of the vocals as call-and-response with the guitar fills. Great lyrics, incomparable guitar playing, and just enough vocal skill to put it all together.
@trevorholden7423
@trevorholden7423 2 года назад
Maggie, you do realize that there are x amount of notes in any scale that is appropriate for improvising to the key of the song in question, and it's how you put them together rhythmically, melodically, and creatively which makes it either a hit or miss scenario. Trust me there's no plagiarism here, just pure talent. It's allowable to let your heroes loose in your compositions, although I really don't think that's the case here. Just relax and enjoy another guitar/songwriter legend..

Mark Knopler has a knack for that Dylan-esque storytelling in a lot of Dire Straits songs. Romeo and Juliet is one of Dire Straits' best, and worthy of anything Dylan ever did. Knopfler was an English teacher before getting into Dire Straits. Which figures, as his lyrics flow like someone who understands how to use the written word to good effect.

@@Decopainterandtea The original version of Layla was recorded by Derek and the Dominos, a band Eric Clapton formed in 1970. Layla was recorded just before they broke up in 1972 and Layla was included on the only studio album Derek and the Dominos produced. Derek and the Dominos disbanded just 2 years later, in 1972. They were a short-lived group due to heavy drug usage. The MTV Unplugged version was recorded in January of 1992.

I think what you are hearing in the melody is the 'call and response' style of guitar playing. In blues guitar playing it is a common way to practice phrasing, you play a lick( a call) then another guitar plays a lick in reply ( response).

As for Mark's singing/speaking - I remember reading an article about guitarists that are not the most impressive singers, but still are great guitarists/musicians, BUT it was because they did attempt to sing. Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix (for example) are/were amazing guitarists, now we also like their singing, but it's not like their singing is something we're going to remember them by. And some of those guitarists started singing to gain more recognition to their names, because people usually recognize singer, not other musicians. So they started singing to put themselves more in the spotlights. Well, I guess it worked ;)

I first heard this song on a jukebox in a restaurant [kind of a truck stop style] and I fell in love with it. It just speaks to me somehow that is hard to explain. I don't know why this song would make me think of it, but have you ever heard R.E.M. Losing my Religion [which, btw, if you don't know, is a Southern expression meaning that you are very upset and about to lose your temper ... although the song seems very 'controlled' and calm]

People much prefer the Alchemy Live version because it has another level of energy in it. Mostly because they changed drummers after the studio version and Terry Williams absolutely beats up a storm live rather than the much more sedate style of the previous drummer. Well worth playing that version and focussing on that drummer. Also the live version sound engineer did a magnificent job of balancing a live event - including the crowd handclapping. Go see.

This is so interesting. It's obvious you're a singer, because all the comments you made were about Mark Knopfler's delivery of the vocals. Great, but there is the small side issue of the fact that he's recognised as one of the greatest pop/blues guitar players of all time! Not one mention of the guitar playing. As I said, it's obvious you're a singer!

Knopfler is one of the all time greats. The Alchemy Live version of this song is amazing, and you can find it on RU-vid. I would put Knopfler in a similar category as SRV, Clapton, Page, BB King. He's one of the rarified few who can "make that guitar sing, thank you very much". His guitar can tell the story without verse to the song. Listen to songs like Romeo & Juliet, Once Upon a Time in the West, Money for Nothing. You'll hear it. He's also a great innovator, with a distinct "fingerpickin" style. No guitar picks on this song. It creates a unique sound.

Mark Knopfler was best known for his unique picking style. A great band with a few big hits (Sultans, Money for Nothing) and lesser known great tracks (Down to the Waterline, 6 blade knife, So Far Away, Ride Across the River, Brothers in Arms, Calling Elvis, When It Comes To You, The Bug, & Heavy Fuel). The last 4 are from On Every Street, their little known 90s album. The Bug is my favorite lyrics, Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug. Sometimes you're the Louisville Slugger, sometimes you're the ball!

Is. He continued after this band ended. His last tour was 2019 but perhaps not last tour forever. He’s only 72.

A cool fact about this song is that Mark Knopfler doesn't use a pick. That's all fingerpicking, which makes the song ten times harder to play, or easier, depending...lol
