Direct Impingement AK?! - the ONLY one in the world

A direct impingement AK is a prototype made by TINCK Arms, the Slovenian company that also built the Perun X16 modular rifle platform (we also did a video on it: • Perun X16 from TINCK Arms )
It uses an AR gas block and gas tube with a hybrid direct impingement system where the gasses are vented to the receiver and then act on a kind of short stroke piston / guide rod.
It's very strange and unusual but it seems to work.

This is the final hybrid between AK and AR. It's so genius that it is hard to understand the why of it, but once you look at the performance (thing that has been explaned exellently) and if you are into guns even a bit, you can visually see and immagine the benefits. The rod acting as a short stroke piston partially reduce the amount of gasses the direct impingment sistem throws in the upper, wile mantening all the functions of an ak. This thing could easely be something that started as a joke, but it can become the next gen of gas systems on a big scale. Hope it takes off like it diserves.

@@boomerisadog3899 PWS Dwell time (unlock) prevents the harsh bolt thrust that can damage(break extractors and lugs). Having a bolt face that is true (flat) to the barrel extention also helps. Remember; ×39 cases are very tapered (cone shaped). This makes the case almost "self ejecting". .556 cases expand to the chamber to slow down dwell time. Of coarse both chamberings contract after chamber pressure ceases but rearward thrust of ×39 will always be greater. To answer your question: I have never broken a PWS lug or extractor. Let me also say Colt had the proper ×39 AR recipe back in the early 90s. .136 inch bolt depth( same as grendel) and a .125 diameter gas port. My Colt bolt never broke either. The only problem with the Colt was super dirty chamber all the time. Chinese and Russian ammo is just dirty.(Although I am super impressed with the new Barnaul load). The problem with doing it in SVT style (of which there are many copies, vz58 ar18, H&K, Hakim etc.) is there needs to be something there to prevent the bolt from flying out. The old piston and guide rod were replaced by a combination part that the bolt carrier slides over. Brilliant. That's theoretically an even simpler design. The barrel isn't free floating though, but that will be the case for any gas operated design where the gas is siphoned off the barrel.

This is actually really fascinating prototyping, it's more of a true "hybrid" platform as it still utilizes a piston but implements direct impingement in a mid-length gas line setup. My question is how much additional fouling have you seen building up back at the bolt carrier group, or just forward of it at that midsection piston port above the chamber (since that's where the gas ends up focusing)? That is the biggest issue with AR platforms utilizing direct impingement (the standard), lots of fouling on the rear of the bolt and on/ inside the carrier group (caused issues on overseas deployments), it's kind of like "sharting in your own mouth" for lack of a better adage. I personally love short stroke piston setups on the AR platform, much easier to keep clean and adds some reliability and robust qualities when using in austere conditions. This is really interesting, look forward to seeing more of this.

@DJTheMetalheadMercenary
@DJTheMetalheadMercenary 3 года назад
@@longbow6416 Considering it's gunpowder and burning such is still going to create carbon residue regardless, fouling is still an issue in direct impingement systems to a varying level of detriment in austere conditions. With the way AR-di systems are set up it's still venting all that gas through the key, down through the bcg and right onto the back end of the bolt and into the receiver area in general. Such a pain in the butt to keep clean, piston systems are far superior in this regard. Agreed, I'd like to see the buildup and fouling after 450 rounds, 900 rounds, and 2000 rounds (and so on) with this true hybrid platform to see where it's collecting and the effects it has on the system's performance. Granted, Slovenia isn't Iraq so the environmentals are starkly different in effect/ affect, but it'll still garner some results in the fouling aspect through use alone.
@longbow6416
@longbow6416 3 года назад
@@DJTheMetalheadMercenary Oh, yeah, I understand, you got those 2 little holes on the side of the BCG to channel gas out that came through it from the gas block, tube, gas key, etc. Doing some quick (bad) math, 7.62 and 5.56 are loaded with about the same amount of powder: 1.60-1.65 grams on both. So in theory both systems should show the same amount of coating. My question is, would Tula or Red Army Standard use a 'dirtier' powder than say Federal, Blazer, or Winchester brand ammo? I know theres a bunch of variables that could only be answered by long term use of the weapon and will it be detrimental with a different cartridge using DI. Ive built 2 Bear Creek rifles using their 7.62x39 DI system but have not run them very hard so I cant say personally if they get dirtier than a 5.56 or if itll cause stoppages with extended use. Itll be a wait and see what Zïga's research comes up with.
@DJTheMetalheadMercenary
@DJTheMetalheadMercenary 3 года назад
@@longbow6416 There's a couple different designs to how the gas is directed once it's in the key atop the bcg, but most vent it straight through the key and down one larger vent onto the back of the bolt where the sealing rings (like really tiny piston rings in a car but very small and stacked on each other) catch it and actuate the bolt and bcg backwards, direct fouling. Insofar as ammo, Tula is cleaner burning than Wolf per se, but not by much as they all source their powder from the 3 different production facilities in Russia (same with RAS). The powder Winchester uses is their proprietary production powder (and burns a little dirtier than Hornady and Federal but I think that'll improve considering they operate some of the Federal production now like the Lake City plant), not sure what the other manufacturers use, but I do know Remington is pretty dirty burning powder too (save for some of their higher end match grade stuff). Certain brands and powder types will certainly foul systems up faster than others, that's a lot of trial and error testing to see what's best for your particular system though. That's pretty awesome, I bet they can eat a good amount of ammo without too many issues, again the environment plays into the results and efficacy of the system as much as the powder/ ammo being used.

1. I can see a problem with heat transfer into the handguard, since the gas cylinder and the barrel chamber are both in the same piece of metal directly below it. That rail is going to get toasty warm with very few rounds. 2. This is absolutely not DI. I would call it short stroke piston, maybe a tappet. It is a very cool implementation, moving the piston reaction force away from the midpoint of the barrel. I would expect excellent potential for accuracy if the bolt lockup does not let it down. Reduced moving mass and slim handguards are additional benefits. 3. The running clearances between the bolt and the guide rod will get fouled, and they will need to be tighter than the conventional AK piston and gas tube to give the same amount of control over the deviation of the bolt. At least it is easy to remove and clean, and AR18 style weapons run well so this shouldnt be a big problem. 4. Great thinking, if the heat can be mitigated then it has a lot of potential.
@HMSNeptun
@HMSNeptun 3 года назад
The gas tube goes directly to the front trunnion, so in terms of placement it is DI I guess, but yeah it is definitely a short stroke piston in terms of how the system works
@davidcolter
@davidcolter 3 года назад
@@HMSNeptun Direct Impingement means that the gas hits the bolt carrier and moves it. The MAS 44 is the classic example, the AR-15 takes the gas further inside the bolt carrier so it is DI with extra steps. This rifle has an annular piston around the guide rod that drives back the bolt carrier. Gas and carrier never come into contact so it is not DI. The use of a gas tube to bring the gas to a receiver mounted cylinder decouples the forces of the gas system from the barrel. The barrel is not bent forward-and-down as the piston is pushed backwards. This is the big win for this system, getting the best parts of conventional short stroke piston and DI systems in one package.
@okancanarslan3730
@okancanarslan3730 3 года назад
it is not pure direct impingement indeed but a type of hybrid short stroke piston system. The recoil rod acts as a short stroke piston and propellant gas do not directly enter the receiver as it is in an AR. İnteresting and innovative design overall.

Very neat concept (seems like Brandon Herrera would like it:) ), especially that it allows for quick barrel changing and free floated barrel. That handguard and top rail are also quite nice. The handguard itself looks AR-like, I wonder if you could modify an AR handguard to fit by cutting the slot in its top section for the front trunnion to fit. But if I understand this gun's operating system correctly, It is not a gas impingement, but a short stroke gas piston, just with the gas tube because of weird location of gas piston (in a similar way the AR is a short stroke gas piston with gas tube).
@Hansmann69

Leading the gas back to a shorter short stroke piston system probably reduces the moving mass even more. A comparison of weight of the moving parts between a traditional short stroke rod and this one would be nice.

it looks really rock stable for lateral motion. I see two likely applications right off the bat (Depending on accuracy). 1. Designated Marksman's rifle (DMR) or sporting rifle for export and 2. as the basis of a squad light machine-gun action-because it IS so fundamentally stable and the layout does work for quick-change barrels.

This seems almost more like a remote short-stroke recoil system than a direct impingement, basically taking the gas piston and putting it above the breech vs out at the gas block itself; but the lines are blurred to the point of semantics I guess. If it was true true direct impingement it would be just dumping gas into or onto the carrier. Either way, the way the gas interacts with the carrier either directly or through a piston component isn't as critical as the fact that there's no large gas piston mass to move around, and that the force of the gas being directed is not out at the end of the barrel as much, by having the gas tube send it back to the breech end of the barrel where it's far stiffer.

It looks well thought-out. I wouldn't call it a DI though, since the gas doesn't act DIRECTLY on the bolt carrier: there IS a short-stroke piston that is in between still. It's just used as both a piston and a guide rod at the same time. And it's designed to prevent the gas in the gas system from entering the action. I'd say it'd be a decent platform for IPSC and other sports shooters. Good for civilians.

As fan of both AR and AK platforms, I have to say it is the true mutant of both. It has the AR barrel style but still keeping to the AK in its Core of keep it simple. More mass slows down recoil. This system has less movement. I think the main reason why it may have less or softer felt recoil is because the gas has to take a longer way until it transfer to mechanical action. You have the same effect with rifle length DI tube vs short carbine DI tube on a AR15. The shorter versions have a harsher recoil. I like this DI AK looks like a good improvement!
