I'm amazed the the manufacturers haven't been making them,it makes it more rigid, this is the way i will go, thanks for sharing, from Coventry 🇬🇧 UK.

The time taken sounds like all our projects 🙂 That was a fantastic idea to modify that tool and it turned out good

It was quite a bit tougher than I thought.. Thanks Joseph !

Well thought out. Using a common insert should save money.

Great result and learning curve. I thought that tool body would be tough, good to know how tough. You perceived and won though. Cheers Tony

Ciao Dean, i like so much how you modify your tool to transform in a tool holder, i think not possible with My milling machine because that steel Is strong, but your milling machine is not afraid of anything🤭 Good job Dean, see you soon, ciao!! Alberto 🇮🇹

You must seen my tooling that I used. I have many of them in my tooling The way I did my tooling was using a insert 3/4 end mill the used one of Randy’s dovetail cutters. I didn’t try to anneal my tool holders. No problem machining the dovetail. What is used for adjusting was 1/4 x 20 threaded rod and made custom adjustment screws. In fact on my channel there was several videos on this

Great job on the tool holder. I have several Randy Richard tools and I use them every time I work in the shop. I don't use the dove tail cutter that often. I made some tool holders one time and after I finished I felt that I would prefer to purchase them in the future. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.

Very nice - I've been thinking about doing exactly this. As for "those projects you can knock out in one afternoon"........but take 5 days - all of mine are that way! 🙂

Gday Dean, I think it was certainly well worth doing, making/modifying tools to me is always interesting and in the last I’ve made tools that are cheap to buy but there’s no fun in that, Randy’s dovetail cutter worked a treat and one day I’ll buy one to add to my collection, great job as always mate and brilliant to see the kids having a crack on the mill, cheers

Thanks Matty, It was good experience testing the carbide and Randy's cutters on some tough material. I saw on another channel, these are about Rockwell C45-50. I'm hoping to involve the grandsons more, they are so busy with school and sports. Cheers...ATB.....

Dang it! I recently milled one of those giant 1" Sandvik tools down to fit a 3/4" AXA toolholder. Tunnel vision is a curse!

Quite a clever idea, but due to the amount of work needed I gave it a miss as the plain tool holders are universal and so cheap .........one thing I did find with these QCTP's and that is when I bought the tool post it came with 4 holders and they locked up at the handle 7 o' clock position but when I ordered some more 2 were so slack they wouldn't lock up and the other 2 were locking at the 5 o' clock position........so I tig welded some 1mm strips of mild steel to the front of the slack tool holder faces and then dressed them clean......all's well that ends well......other people have come across this problem too with replacement tool holders when bought separately to the main body..

Lol , it would have been sacrilege if it held a bigger insert !!! There tough stuff to machine . You might have to get to about 850 deg C to have any major annealing effect . Great end result . 👍

500 of isn't enough to soften a high carbon steel. At least 4140 and O-1. The phosphate coating surviving such a low temperature is an interesting observation.

Looks like Elons mantra the best part is no part,if you can eliminate or combine functions less is more.If it works.

Still turned out nice. Might consider cross drilling the holder and stud and inserting a roll pin rather than remake the stud.

After all that if you had to do it over would you go the same way or use a block of some tough but workable pre-treated steel and dress it, cut the dovetail and mill out a pocket for the insert?
@TheAyrCaveShop
@TheAyrCaveShop 8 месяцев назад
Interesting Idea Bruce... I think though had I partially annealed say at 800-900 DegF (just guessing at the needed temp) for several hours, before doing any machining. Would have made life much easier.. Thanks ! ATB....
