What about efficiency of 7812? 20v solar pannel voltage we r taking out 12v , 8v wasted...if current drawn is 1amp 8x1=8watts of heat generated. that's not good for long life of any electronics component. Best way is to use buck step down converter approx 90% of efficiency .
Rishabh - The IC 7812 is not consuming 1 Amp. The load (bulb thru' the inverter) is consuming all the current 20v-12v=8V, but that 8V drop is not being wasted by the regulator IC. As the 8V is not being "dropped down" by a series resistor (that would heat up & waste the 8 Watts). The 7812 IC does not waste power like a series dropping resistor would do, but it converts the 20 V input into a 12 V output without wasting power in form of dispiation. U can test this, by giving 20V to input of the 7812 IC, & then do not connect any load to its output pin, .. & now U will see that the 7812 regulator will not heat up at all, bcoz it consumes a very small (negligible) idle current. The load when connected to the 7812 IC output, .. that only consumes all the main current, so power wasted due to this regulator is very small. - (thus your calculation is not correct here, ... as it is based on a "passive resistive voltage drop", which is not the case here in this "active electronic" regulator IC).
@@rishabhlavhale3096 - Yes, no load connected, means no heating of the 7812 IC, but its heating up on load, does not mean that 8 Watt is being wasted extra, due to disscipiation, .. it is much less... But if a resistor was used to drop the 20 V to 12 V, .. then 8 watt extra would be wasted, but in this case of using the 7812 regulator, the wasted current is much less.

For larger capacity , like 15 to 20 amps, you can use 2 MJ2955 PNP tr to bypass the high I alongwith one LM 317 or 338 to get the required output V. Or simply use a buck converter which is available at As mzon

I use 2 16 volts 3300uf cap 2 diodes and support so Far 100 watts solar panel power up a 300 and 500 watts inverter I love it in some cases is better that avid batteries in some not I just try for hrs playing my TV laptop and Bluetooth sound bar koooooool
