I purchased the Extreme Isolation EX-29, they are very comfortable to wear but I found that they don't block enough of the drums as I would like. I have an old pair of Peltor protective earphones (non corded) and they are by far the best for isolating the drums while providing clean sound and cutting out the overtones. It actually sound like a perfectly EQ'd recorded set. All I can say is WOW!. I'm not sure what the Peltor model is but it's fairly wide in dark olive green finish. Try a pair if you get a chance, you'll be surprised how well they make the drum set sound!I also wear earbuds under them when playing to a music track.

Hey Austin, first of all your review was great and these are really good phones for a lot of reasons. I got these in from Amazon this week, based on this review, but I have to say they didn't work for me. I got these mainly because of the 29 db rating, but I find too much sound gets in because of the lack of adequate tension in the headstrap, which allows sound to bleed in past the pads ( I do not have a small head either lol ). That being said, I'm not sure it would be as critical with sound bleeding out. I'm used to the Peltor Optime 101 earmuff (which even has a lesser rating of 27db) with it's comfort combined with good tension to keep the noise out. A while ago I did buy the Vic Firth headphones (based on the Peltor muffs) but the speakers inside are mounted too close to the ear and they are uncomfortable, plus they don't sound good! I may just stick to using buds with the Peltor 101 muff for now ...

I'd love to know what you like in your headphone mix when playing in a live setting. Do you use an external monitor to push the low end sounds/air as a combo so you feel your kick and floor toms?

I’m a drummer with a very nice setup at home. I have a mic on each drum, hi hat, and overheads running through an older Yamaha digital mixer which I run iTunes or recorded tracks through. Recently purchased the Direct Sound EX29 on Amazon based upon this review and a few others. I have been using Vic Firth isolation headphones for years, which cost around $80 and seem to blow every 6 to 8 months. After the first few uses with the Direct Sound, I’m VERY disappointed in lack of isolation with these. I don’t understand how the review can be positive. Buyer beware as this is money poorly spent. I may consider the Ultraphones at next time.

Austin. Great video. How do these headphones work for Roland v-drums? Thanks.
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 6 лет назад
I’m sure they’d work perfectly for that. You don’t necessarily need isolation headphones for e-kits but it doesn’t hurt. It would probably isolate out almost all of the acoustic pad sounds when playing though, so you would just hear the electronic sounds only which could be cool.
@icekng456

what does it mean to isolate, u mean the outside sounds? so basically its got a good foam around the ear? or does it have to do with the sound coming from inside

I just bought the EX29 PLUS HP's and they suck. No comparison to the Vic Firth SIH2 in attenuation, none. I'm returning them if I can. So I would update your very convincing review by purchasing a 2022 version of the 2015 phones you reviewed just to see if there is a difference. I'm really quite baffled as to what is going on with the EX29 PLUS phones I just received...I really thought they would be an upgrade to the Vic Firth SIH2's based on the respective db ratings. Cheers Bro.

You can "make" a pair of drumming headphones for a fraction of the price, by just buying a pair of sound isolating earmuffs (like ones you can get at home depot) and wearing a pair of earbuds/monitors underneath. I use a pair of Direct Sound's HP-25 earmuffs ($44.95 on amazon) with a pair of KZ ATE in-ear monitors ($12.98)

Austin, I received a pair of EX29’s for my birthday to use for drumming and I was disappointed in the amount drum sound that is left in. They don’t seem to have enough noise protection I need. Could there be something wrong with the headphones? My Vic Firth’s seem to give me much more protection. I did send messages to the company both email and Facebook message about this concern. I hoping to hear from them soon and that they would willing to check them out. They actually feel well and are very comfortable to wear. Any suggestions? Also wanted to mention I enjoyed your video.

I have a pair of Beyerdynamics but they just don't isolate enough for me. The EX-29's isolate a lot which I like.
@BillBrolse
@BillBrolse 8 лет назад
+Dennis Mdoerfer I have both the 770M and this one. Even if the 770M is rated with a noise reduction of 35dBA the EX-29 isolates a bit more, but not much. The 770M are more robust and sounds much better - the perfect headphones for drummers.

Hey man, amazing video. I am a guitarist and I find IEMs just dont block out enough sound for me, and its getting to the point were it's not really that pleasant to play live anymore. Would you say these could be used in a live situation for a guitarist to replace IEMs. I have resorted to wearing crazy big earmuffs for practise so I dont damage my hearing but the downside of that is everything is just a mish mash of sound. Cheers, Kieran.

Will there be upgrades in the future for audiophiles and such? I build musical instruments in my garage for a living and have been looking for a pair of passive noise canceling headphones like this for a long time. I would just like the sound quality to be top notch. Or in your opinion, are they better than most in the same price category? Thanks for the video!

can you hear the cymbals on this one? I used to have the vic firth headphones, my problem with those was that I couldn't hear the cymbals.I end up playing them harder, just so I can hear them.
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 8 лет назад
Well, these tend to isolate higher frequencies more so they cut out a lot of that high harsh sound from the cymbals but still let the low end of the drums through. You can still "hear" the cymbals but to me they sound much softer and more balanced w/ the other sounds from the drums...

hi i'd like to use these headphones to listen mp3 travelling by train. Registered environment noise is about 70/75db and frequencies between 150-300 hertz mainly. What do you think ? Thanks
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 8 лет назад
+marco depe Well, I will say this. These headphones do tend to allow more of the lower frequencies in than the highs... so if you're trying to block out lows, they will help but might not be your best option. My in-ears definitely block out more of the lows, but I like the lows, so thats why I prefer the EX-29's for drumming. I'd say just try them out and see what you think... return them if they don't work for ya!

Hey, Austin - Have you had a chance to try Ultraphones? From what I've read, they are essentially Sony 7506 headphones with 29db isolation. They also run ~$100 more than the EX-29's. I have not tried either as of yet. I have a very inexpensive set of isolation headphones I found on Amazon that are doing the job but lack low end.

Hey Austin, great video, thanks for walking through that in such detail! I bought the "Beyerdynamic DT-770-M-80 Closed Headphone for Drummers and Monitoring with Extreme Isolation Against Ambient Noise" and was wondering if you've had any experience with the M80's. I love the phones, but they're still not quiet enough. I want to hear as much of the microphones in my phones and as little of the physical drums as possible. Do you feel that you get this with the EX-29's?
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 7 лет назад
+Daniel Dossey They're the most isolated of any over-ear headphone I've tried so far. I think the only thing that would isolate more would be custom in-ears but I kind of like the way the EX29's make the drums sound acoustically. You can still hear the low end and "feel" the drum sound, if that makes sense. In-ears always block out a little too much for me and make the kit sound completely dead and tiny. I like to still hear that low end come through the headphones, I just want to filter out the harsh highs and bring the volume of everything way down, which the EX29's do beautifully. But you can also monitor your mic mix through them nicely as well. Hope that helps!

+Austin Burcham Im thinking about buying these but am not sure yet. I dont have any mics for my drumkit, I just want to play along to some tracks and not have the drums take over so much that I have to put the music on the loudest. I also dont play my drums very loudly. Do you think that these phones are what Im looking for, or are they maybe a bit more for the full out studio drummer? Thanks!

+Austin Burcham Side note. I was wondering if these would be good for feedback when recording close-mic'd vocals? I've got an iso booth and I currently use MoreMe's which I feel bleed pretty heavily. I've experimented with noise-canceling headphones and had better luck. Will these correctly prevent that sort of top end loop that happens sometimes when recording loud vocals?

These do not block out as much sound as they claim and they don't sound great. I also have the EXT37 wireless headphone versions. They sound even worse but block a little more sound. Choose another headphone for mixing and definitely mastering. VicFirths new version of wireless headphones are better. However those are very tight and do not adjust very much. The direct sounds are more comfortable and better adjustments. I use in ear monitors with the EXT37 for extreme protection. VicFirths for basic protection and earplugs for musicians can be used or together if you are not listening and just for protection. I bought the EXT37 for less than $50 brand new. At that price they are OK.

I had the headband snap on an older model once but the newer ones seem a lot more flexible and durable. I have noticed the earcup adhesive can loosen up over time from sweating and stuff but usually you can just press them back on and they're fine but if you needed to order new earcups you could. Other than that, I've never had any issues with the drivers or the cable or anything like that..
