Filming coverage of a dialogue scene is the basis for most films. Understanding the logistics is not difficult, but critical to getting a good result that will engage the audience.

"Jarmusch won that award for 'stranger in paradise btw' for being different and that ship has sailed.' What are you talking about? He won the award because it's a great film. Period. And no ship has sailed - someone could be making a great film as we speak with the same format. And sweep all the awards.

Some DP's now use natural lighting, that makes it easier to record 2 or more angles at the same time...

Really enjoyed watching this video. A lot of challenges/compromises to deal with on set. Last year I started using a shot list, and started shooting out of order, for the sake of not having to constantly move the lighting. However, doing this requires a lot of planning, prior to hitting the record button. Speaking of lighting, your RU-vid live session on lighting was very cool. Look forward to catching your next live video!

One word: Fincher. that boy does not know the word enough it seems. However, his work is crazy good. So, I'm watching an episode of ER. It's in the dead of winter. The characters are walking down a busy street, cold, snowy, lots of traffic, an ambulance comes by, you can barely hear them, light is crappy, one take. A LOT of that on this show I've noticed. I guess that's the difference between television and cinema I reckon.

Kinda random but if you like Down by Law and Jim Jarmusch you should check out the show Fishing with John, from the 90s. It's hilarious. Jim is on the first episode iirc. Each episode is John Lurie (Stranger than Paradise) taking random people like Tom Waits on absurd fishing ventures.

Thank you for sharing this! The V setup looks a lot like a multi-camera setup. In a hypothetical situation, should a filmmaker consider working with multiple cameras to shoot a take? How would one or two extra cameras affect the lighting and blocking of a scene? I hope your feature project is still in the works, really curious to see it!
@Crimsonengine
@Crimsonengine 4 года назад
Thanks Michael. Adding cameras means the light has to be further away and, unless you are able to take the roof or walls of your set, smaller. This means is not as soft and not as controllable.
@MichaelSavidgeStoryteller
@MichaelSavidgeStoryteller 4 года назад
@@Crimsonengine Oh, I see! That's why it would be hard to do a multi-camera sitcom outside of a soundstage. That would also make lighting setups like the Book Light impractical; how could you hide that in two separate shots? Thanks for the tip!!

Hey, great video! I'm a new subscriber to your channel, and I'd really enjoy seeing a video covering audio recording and editing when shooting a conversation... how to mic each person in the best way during a two-way conversation, intercutting between one person and another and audio issues that can come up during editing. When shooting the scene, how do you deal with overlapping audio between both actors from another take if you've shot the entire conversation three times from three different angles? I've been looking all over RU-vid for a video that deals with this, and I can't find anything. Anyway, I'm learning a lot from your videos!

I film 4K so I can punch in, but still cannot achieve Clean Singles (A Dirty OTS is still Dirty even when punched in), unless the actors are seated far apart from each other/divided by a table.
@chompchompfood
@chompchompfood 2 года назад
The clips you referenced from the movie Joker I was curious if you think those were cropped in to get those dirty CU singles? I found even making simple cooking videos shooting wider and cropping-in during edit helps immensely to give variety to my shots that I wouldn't have thought I needed otherwise. Do you as a filmmaker do this quite a lot, too? Is that standard industry practice? Or usually, for those large-budget Hollywood movies like Joker, or a Roger Deakins project, do they shoot those as their own take and rarely crop-in? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Why not shoot with multiple cameras for V coverage?
@Crimsonengine
@Crimsonengine 4 года назад
I spoke a little about this in the video. To get most cinematic lighting setups, especially for closeups, you need to get the lights and flags very close to the actor. You can't do this if you're shooting the wide at the same time, because all those lights and stands will be in frame. Multi-camera will always be a compromise, and is avoided in most film scenarios because it's an aesthetic associated with TV.
@gkochanowsky
@gkochanowsky 4 года назад
I would like to see that. The nuts and bolts of lighting on set is something I'd like to know more about.

@BushXCGL
@BushXCGL 4 года назад
@@gkochanowsky Multiple cameras also take into account budget. It's not as simple as renting a camera/lens package, it's the manpower involved for that extra unit. That could easily go into the thousands of dollars per day just by adding one more camera so sometimes it's not really feasible for low-budget films.
@gkochanowsky
@gkochanowsky 4 года назад
@@BushXCGL Wouldn't it depend? It could be the case of one camera for three days vs. three cameras for one day.
