I love what Ellen DeGeneres said in an Oscar ceremony: “Is not that we don’t have time for long speeches, we don’t have time for boring speeches”. If he had a good speech the music wouldn’t start. And second, all potential winners know about time and music. He was extremely rude.
The only silver lining on this speech was that Michaela Coel immediately followed it and showed what an amazing and perfect acceptance speech should sound like (and she did it in 48 seconds).
@@thebaseballking1123 lol was that supposed to be an insult? Im also guessing you never listened to the acceptance speech I referenced because you would have realized the point was that something meaningful and impactful could be stated in under 60 seconds (vs the 3 min bumbling speech we got here). Perhaps search RU-vid for the other speech - I’m sure you can easily find it.
@@thebaseballking1123 umm…you care less but you’ve now commented twice, to a comment about the merits of a speech made by a quasi-celeb? Lol - it’s all good, I leave you with this quote from the other speech that surprisingly speaks to your comment about celebs - funny how the universe brings things full circle. “I dare you - in a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to in turn feel the need to be constantly visible, for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success - do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence’.

I just assumed you're supposed to do a quick 1-minute-or-less speech at the show and then you can do your proper speech (like this one) when you go to celebrate with your crew no?
I understand that he won an amazing award, but he's taking time from other people to speak, and the way he told them to stop the music was arrogant, unprofessional and extremely disrespectful.
That’s actually the only thing I liked. He went out of his way to shake the hands of fellow nominees like Barry Jenkins and Michaela Coel was to me a sigh of respect to their work. The rest was way too long
This guy needed to shut the hell up - everyone knows you have a limited amount of time to make a speech, but he thought his words were too important. You don't get to take up 3 1/2 minutes., more than 4 if you count the time from when his name was announced. After the 2nd music warning, his mic should have been cut, though what he said about Anya was sweet.
Yes, congrats to him for winning, and it was well-deserved. But it was his arrogance of not once, but twice, dismissing the cues to wrap it up. Everyone knows there's limited time, but he felt he deserved more than 3 times what most were given.
I sensed he's been nursing a Lo-Fi Hollywood grudge for many, many years. Back in the day, his adapted screenplay of the Elmore Leonard novel 'Get Shorty' was heavily praised. The film was popular that year and his script was nominated for a Golden Globe which he lost to Emma Thompson's adaptation of Jane Austen's 'Sense & Sensibility' Edit: His followup EL adaptation of 'Out of Sight' didn't win at the Oscars a few years later. Last night's display has a strong whiff of him attempting to avenge that -- and coming off as an idiot in the process.
@@mercygrrl Well, Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility script is one of the best adapted screenplays, ever. So this guy should have been just happy that he was even nominated next to genius Emma.
@@oscarfun100 You get no argument w/ me on S&S. And it was Emma's very first screenplay. Emma also gives wonderful acceptance speeches. If I was Scott's agent (or therapist) I'd make him watch my YT playlist of memorable acceptance speeches .

This was the most ridiculous and beyond condescending behavior at an Award show! Like, Who TF is he to think he can hold up/off a so intricately planned live show so that he can read every content in his 2 Page speech. Geez! Disappointing!
In the _Independent_ : "Even though the televised award show is a dying institution, one slowly chipped away at with every passing year, the 2021 Emmys still somehow achieved the impossible: the worst acceptance speech in history. "Scott Frank’s win for directing the Netflix limited series _The Queen’s Gambit_ encapsulated everything wrong with these things. A man nobody knows read aloud from two bits of paper for more than three interminable minutes, interjecting here and there to chastise the producers attempting to play him off with music, his star - a bewildered Anya Taylor-Joy - looking on helplessly. Never mind that Frank’s entirely pedestrian direction beat Oscar winner Barry Jenkins’ lush, gorgeous work on the criminally underseen _The Underground Railroad_ . This was - removed from the sheer curiousness of Frank’s win - a sour, whiny and unpleasant acceptance speech, moody when it should have been celebratory, and lacking in the powerful economy of so many others at the event."
This is surprising to you? This is who these people are, “LOOK AT ME!”. And, “rules are for other people, not me. Our “community” MUST be mentioned, by name, for the PR!”
I understand the emotion and the feelings involved. You're awarded the top accolade in your field and it feels like the culmination of a lifetime of struggle and work and I get it, you want to thank every possible person who contributed to your success but lol he could've gone about it in a different and better way.
I think it was a domino effect bcus debbie allen first said something like dont even give me a timer take the timer away lmao and i notice at award shows when one person says that someone else will say that shortly after haha
@@shutupandeatasmr4498 True, but she was receiving the Governor’s Award which is often a tribute to a person’s LIFETIME body of work and deserves much more than 45 seconds in response. nah, he was rude that night. when the screen says stop, you must stop. this ain't a lifetime achievement award where you can speak for longer. there's other recipients that need to be awarded after your entitled, rude behind.
why I’m not surprised the longest and most boring speech is by an old white guy who said ‘I’m almost done’ and still keeps talking for as long as he wants
Show certainly reeks of arrogance and belittling the audience, it's just that most people are fooled by big eyes, hotness, and quirkiness (omg drugs). Not surprised people feel repulsed by this guy's attitude. A football game would have more compelling players than the wooden miming of a human with emotions in this show
This kinda crap always seems to happen yet it would be so easy to solve why can’t they just tell everyone you have exactly 1 minute to talk no exceptions. Everyone knows in advance and has to prep a speech that is 1 min or less. It’s almost like they don’t want to make a simple rule to solve this because then there wouldn’t be awkward situations like this guy to boost their ratings and media attention
@@peanutbutter4435 I’m saying make it a hard rule. Cut off the mic, have a moderator tell him he’s done, bring out security to escort him off the stage. If they truly cared about enforcing the rule they would. However, they won’t because they love when this shit happens because it means the media and social media will be talking about the awards show more than normal. For example, the only reason I even knew the Emmys happened was this video hitting the media and social media.
LMAO all this guy did was shush the shushers and gave all the monday morning talk shows something more to talk about other than how short everyone's speeches are and the outfits. 🤣
@@davidteer80 I know and I don't care. An awards show running late is quite normal. Every single Oscars was meant to be over in time for the news at 11 on the east coast and it never happens no matter how often they advertise a shorter show every year.

How about you lose your award and have set out a season like a pro sports penalty when you overrun. Or, appropriate for this award yell, "Cut" and then chew him out for not taking direction. Another option: Play them out with loud calliope music.
2021: Grateful Indigenous artists including the co-creator of “Reservation Dogs”, Sterlin Harjo awarded a creative but snobbish man, Scott Frank of “The Queen’s Gambit” with a bizarre speech and has little to no compassion to his crew. And yet, there are 0 nominations for “Reservation Dogs” that Sterlin would be proud of and for his crew. Let that sink in.

I had to come and see what the fuss was about...it was a fine speech, sorry it wasn't short enough for all the ADHD people on twitter and in the comments. The persons speech after this it was compared to was good as well. Stop turning this into a war.
*Music subtly plays as a cue for time restraints* *Narcissism kicks in* This guy just black balled his own career, while at the top.. just to make a speech at a bourgeoisie award show where Covid restrictions don't apply. I love the actress's increasing expression of panic, that is she is impressively containing.
In a way I sort of understand is frustration because I know that if he weren't after he could ramble on forever because it seems like every freaking actor who wins an Oscar goes on for 5 minutes about stuff that isn't even related to their work or the film itself. I know Joaquin Phoenix for example rambled on for nearly 5 minutes about baby cows and veganism and a whole bunch of other stuff.
@@SomethingSomethingg to make it in Hollywood you need three things 1) high functioning psychopathy 2) master liars 3) conform and assimilate to anything..... anything. They’re all delusional and we enable them because they’re good at “make believe”
Everyone is booing him, but if I get rewarded for years of work I put in on a project, I’m saying what I want to say. If it were a celebrity you knew n loved, you’d All be saying differently.
He's directed like two shows before this and one of those was only a single episode. And no, people hate long-ass, boring, self-indugent speeches no matter who it is.
Exhibit A for white male privilege, i.e. the "rules" don't apply to me. Just take your award, say thanks to your family, and thank your colleagues in private. That's the classy move.
Man that's it? I heard his speech was supposed to be "cringe" and was expecting him to say something rude/inapproriate. Guess people are always looking for the next meme even when there is nothing to see but a dude giving a 3 and a half minute standard enough speech lmao.
Pretty much, he took a long ass time but gave praise to his crew in a meaningful way and only made it about himself with self-deprecation (a but cringe, but OK). It could have been way worse, based on some of the comments I had heard.
