Director Jeff Zimbalist Talks About His AppleTV+ Docuseries, 'Super League The War for Football' Streaming January 13, 2023.
The game of soccer (internationally football or futbol) is called, "The peoples' game." A more than a century and a half old sport that has had its geo-political influences on the international front with International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations(UEFA).
Now as UEFA is facing challenges from the Super League, a brand looking to overshadow the peoples game and local club rivalries for international dollars, geo-politics, globalism and capitalism in its worst form is encroaching on the world's most beloved team sport.
In the new AppleTV+ docuseries, 'Super League: The War for Football', Director and Producer Jeff Zimbalist ('The Two Escobars', 'The Line', 'Momentum Generation') creates a four-part examination of the Super League's encroachment on the sport of football for the average fan and being pushed out of their own market as partial team owners for mega corporations trying to create a league where the best of the best play each other weekly on continental Europe.
We chat with Zimbalist about this being a real threat to the UEFA as we have seen the XFL and the United States Football League (USFL) attempt to take on the National Football League (NFL) and fail multiple times. Zimbalist mentions that although the media portrayed this as a major and moral victory for the average fan of football, the Super League has not gone away and this could possibly be more than of a challenge for the UEFA than once anticipated.
