With BlackBerry in theaters on May 12, we invited director Matt Johnson to read your Letterboxd reviews of his film. BlackBerry on Letterboxd: boxd.it/CoVK Edited by @CultPopture. #blackberry #mattjohnson #letterboxd #filmreviews
He did a Q&A after a screening of Blackberry in Chicago last week and started off by roasting Beau is Afraid unprompted for at least 2 minutes straight 😂
Him laughing at Savina's review and then seeing her top 4 and knowing exactly why she didn't like the film (there are no female characters aside from tiny parts with a few lines). Absolutely hilarious.
my partner is an engineer (and a woman) and she didn't even notice the lack of women in the movie since she's so used to offices full of guys like that lol
Lol yup, welcome to Letterboxd, where half the zoomers on there review films solely based on identity politics. Not enough women or POC? Two stars for you!
I disagree with almost everything he said, but this is the energy I’ve been missing. Let the teeth come out! Finally a filmmaker who’s not afraid to talk shit
He’s just a film snob with a controversial opinion or two under his belt like all of us. Love that he’s not afraid to shit talk, he’s got a good spirit. It’s not like a revolutionary or anything but it’s refreshing when a film maker is not all peaches and cream about film. Nirvanna The Band The Show is a great stab at geek culture and unabashed obsessions
The fact that it's kinda mindless sh*t is what bothers me. He guested on Sardonicast and said that Under The Silver Lake just had pacing/structural issues that could have been tightened in editing. Now he's devolved to just saying it's worthless outside of Garfield's performance with no real justification behind it.
@@tekkenchampion832 interesting you think he's a film snob, the way he talks about movies feels the exact opposite to me lol, laid back and simple, you can see what kind of stuff he enjoys rather than values like youre looking through glass
Matt Johnson is legitimately one of my favorite filmmakers working today, I hope black Berry is super successful so he gets to make more movies! If anyone here hasn’t checked out his other work PLEASE do so, The Dirties, Operation Avalanche, Nirvana The Band The Show
@@MamadNobari lol you haven’t even seen them. There’s his tv show too which is amazing. His stuff really hit me on a level that made me understand how to make movies and he helped me find what my style is
8:04 cant tell if he’s being serious about this or if its a reference to the classic youtube video “Unforgivable #2” A LEAN NIGHT Edit: he very well may love those movies but in his sight and sounds list he says the same three with his comment being “a lean night”. I love you matt johnson
I watched The Dirties in Glasgow back in March and Matt gave the most hilarious Q&A I ever had the pleasure to attend! Sadly I didn't get to catch Blackberry during that festival, but I look forward to watching it soon. Love this guy!
“Right now it’s at 3.7 but this is going to plummet.” For reference, a month after release to general audiences, the movie has an average rating of 3.9
Matt Johnson (May 2023): BlackBerry is at a 3.7 as soon as it releases in full the numbers are gonna plumet. April 2024: Currently stands at 3.8 on Letterboxd.
Matt Johnson just quoted an "Unforgivable" episode with his Letterboxd profile: "Doctor Zhivago, A Brief Encounter, and Bridge on the River Kwai. A LEAN NIGHT!"
I appreciate the top 4s that seem like random movies because you know those are ACTUALLY that person's favourote movies and they're not trying to show off.
Did this MF just give his top three movies the "A lean night!" recommendation from that old Gunnar Stansson viral video, "Unforgivable?" Matt Johnson, if you somehow come back to this video, let me know!
I’m so happy he’s getting some mainstream recognition especially here in the states. He and Jay created my favorite sitcom of all time and Matt has now made 3 of my favorite movies. Go SEE BLACKBERRY
One serious flaw in the movie. Doug Fregin is made to look a bit stupid my the way Matt Johnson portrays him. Since forever, characters who keep their mouth open are portrayed as stupid.
first time hearing of this guy but I already love him lol this made me look into his stuff. Dude has a great personality. Also he looks exactly like Chris D'elia, which may not be a good thing depending how you look at it... but there is that..
L for roasting Under the silver lake and Beau is afraid... like, what... why these two, great movies... Is he trolling? Why he gotta do Spielberg like that :'D
