Director Reacts - TAEMIN - 'Danger' MV 

This is the most historical and iconic solo debut in kpop history. 21 years old Taemin, first kpop artist ever to do a solo debut from an active group. Followed by his SHINee members with their solo as well, with Jonghyun the year after just 25 years old the first one to do a whole solo studio album with his own written songs and production (BASE). And yes, they all give their own fingerprint, even Key manage to make a unique style of the most common office theme with Good & Great. And yes, SHINee and Taemin and MJ. That was very so in their early career. SHERLOCK was choreographed by MJs own choreographer, Tony Testa, and if I am not tripping, he contributed to SHINees EVERYBODY as well. The other well known choreographer, Ian Eastwood worked on the choreography for Taemins Danger, but also SHINee's VIEW. Danger is to me a mixture of MJ and Billy Idol. And yes, Taemin said he was influenced by both MJ and kpop solo artist Bi Rain (1th generation of kpop, a very cool guy who you reacted to before doing a MV together with JYP "Switch to me")). Taemin developed his more genderless style as his career progressed. Move in 2017 was the turning point for him, when this concept of gender fluidity in his dance and appearance really kicked off. It is iconic for this aspect, which had never really been seen before. Just like the Guilty challenge has been viral, so was the so called “Move Disease” when it was released

As MJ was one of two artists who inspired Taemin to dance and sing, he wanted his solo to include a lot of MJ inspiration. Fun fact during Taemin's releases in 2018/2019 one of his back up dancers was Santa a Japanese 2X World Champion Street dancer. The interesting fact is when he signed with SM as a back up dancer it stipulated in his contract he would only dance for Taemin, a true testament to Taemin's skill and Santas respect for him. Taemin also highlighted Santa's solo dance during one of his concerts and Santa has since gone on to become an idol himself.

As mentioned, "Danger" is Taemin's first single off his solo debut album Ace from 2014, so this was Taemin when he was 21 years old. That's why this was his debut single instead of the album's title track "Ace." Michael Jackson has been one of Taemin's idols since he was a little boy. Believe me, it is not lost on him, SM or, least of all, fans, that he dances like Michael Jackson. But that's not the only reason why he is considered the Korean MJ. Taemin just has something special and his whole aura and being on stage radiates awe inspiring magnificence. He just embodies what it means to be a performer, similar to what made MJ so unique, special and legendary. There are several clips of multiple performances where Taemin and SHINee have performed tribute dances and participated in performances with Michael Jackson songs. Prior to becoming a trainee at the age of 11, Taemin had no formal dance training. He started out as a self-taught popper and locker who learned to dance by copying dancers on TV, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. He said he thought dancers like Kpop solo artist Bi Rain and Michael Jackson were cool, so he would try and copy their moves. He debuted as the main dancer of SHINee in 2008 at the age of 14 -- so he had about 3 years of training as a dancer once he became a trainee. Therefore, most of what you see is just natural talent and an unbelievable amount of dedication. Taemin has put in a lot of effort to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today. But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard than himself. He has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. This dance was choreographed by Ian Eastwood, a well known young American choreographer, who I believe is right around the same age as Taemin -- this was Ian's first Kpop collaboration -- and I am sure he choreographed this dance to fit Taemin's natural dance-style not the other way around. Taemin didn't just learn this choreography he merely perfected it LOL. Although, he had no idea how skilled Taemin really was. However, as you are starting to discover, the way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. The more you watch Taemin dance, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be uniquely Taemin. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D It's said that if Taemin's dance looks easy then it's actually really difficult and if it looks extremely difficult then it's even harder than you imagine. No one moves the way he does and even his backup dancers struggle to keep up with him. Choreographers still say he is constantly asking them to make the choreography more difficult and he is never satisfied until the difficulty level is off the charts. As Taemin has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does. Taemin has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. He's also one of the only idols who have debuted in 3 different Kpop generations -- second generation with SHINee in 2008, third generation as a solo artist in 2014 and now fourth generation as a member of SuperM in 2019. You should watch some of Taemin's concert documentaries to see just how hard he trains and works. If you search RU-vid you will find 2 or 3 from his solo concerts, as well as documentaries/behind the scenes of SHINee's concerts. Taemin doesn't have to try to grab your attention, he just exudes command of the stage. That is what makes him one of the top performers and why he is so popular. Yes, he has literally been voted one of the top two BEST dancers in all of Kpop by his peers and industry experts. Literally everyone in the Kpop industry looks up to Taemin and idolizes him. He is the idol that most choreographers dream of getting the chance to work with. "Danger" is timeless. That's kind of what SHINee is known for. As SM's experimental boy group SHINee are trendsetters and trail blazers. They are expected to create songs with styles and sounds that have never been seen or heard before and yet have a timeless appeal. DANGER. As his first solo album… POW💪🏽! Notice how the chain, from his ear to nose, is there then disappears? Twice. A great Declaration of Independence. Why are they (SHINee & solo albums) so unique? It’s what happens when you win your freedom from the narrow cookie cutter control of the agency. They have contracts that give them freedom. I heard it is total creative freedom renewed every 3 years. It was said that BTS is stuck in 7 year contracts and likely under far more controlling restraints. SHINee Foundation was created, by Jonghyun’s mother, after his passing. It offers mental health support for singers in KPop. What I hope it grows into doing is offering legal support to parents and new talent so that they are not taken advantage of. Setting equitable standard contracts, for the industry, with accountability and transparency. How about legislative protection and support from the SK government since KPop is a top earner for the country’s GDP. Along with KPop and KDramas… did you know that S Korea is world famous for having the highest rate of “active ending” in all developed nations? JH contributed to that ranking. God rest his weary soul. The SHINee members walk into a huge brand new, state of the art, SMTown Agency building costing many many millions of dollars. Money earned by our young men. How much does that bother our SHINee members? It is a factory for talent. All profits to be distributed? Hopefully they get an equity share of the building value as part of their income. An interviewer, with Key, referred to SMTOWN as a family. Key’s cynical correction was “We are contract employees”. Suffering creates great art... and revolutions. This world needs a revolution. In the shot where he has the top bun (@2:54 - 3:07), I think that he looks so much like Ian Eastwood (the choreographer). Like, something about the way he dances in that part, specifically, is so much more like Ian than any other time I've seen him do choreography by Ian (which he's done on other solo songs, as well as at least one of SHINee's songs). I'm not sure why, it just gives me such a different vibe than I normally get from Taemin in his dancing. And it's more than just being able to tell it's choreographed by Ian, it's kind of like he's channeling more of Ian's vibe during that little breakdown, in my opinion. I don't know if anyone else noticed that, or thought anything about that part specifically. I'd love to hear other's opinions. (:
