Dirt Devil Model 103

These old Dirt Devil Model 103s are my favorite little hand vacs. They had 2.0 amp direct air motors, metal roller brushes, and were basically hand held versions of the Royal metal uprights. Great for cleaning furniture and tight areas or stairs where you couldn't take an upright. It would also work great for your car and would agitate the dirt out of the mats unlike a shop vac which might miss some.

I have one of these in each of my two homes. Super for stair carpeting, car interiors, small messes, Mine have attahments: hose, tube, crevice tool and stiff upholstery brush, You tajke the rubber gasket off the front, release the belt then attach the hose. So convenient.

Oh at last - you're the only person who explains that you have to remove the belt to add the hose - I've looked everywhere but no video showing that - thanks!

We just picked one up at a sale, works great and your video helped in understanding how to change the belt. Thanks!

I've got a couple of these, both with attachments. My grandparents bought one new several years ago with the attachments. I bought one on ebay last year for $5, bought the attachment set later on for $10. They work great, and the attachments and small size makes them really nice for small cleanups and for cleaning vehicles. I also have an Ultra model which has a built in hose, you flip a lever to close off the brush roll and you can then use the hose and wand. The ultra model I got has the paper bad converter. The paper bag requires an adapter...good luck finding one, that's why I bought the ultra model on ebay because it came with the converter. Yep, the Ultra model doesn't have the suction like the 103 models did. The one my grandparents have has that same noise, its done it for several years, they used to use it for cleaning their travel trailer so it got used quite heavily for a few years...which would explain the bearing noise LOL.

I need to find another one of these. My Grandparents had one and it worked well. I think it would be great for mattresses.

+CarAholic/MusicMan1995 I'm sure it would, these little vacs are so versatile because of their size. Mine did a great job of vacuuming my doormats which the uprights are almost too powerful for. It was able to hold the carpet up! There's some of these on ebay that look to be in good shape and they're cheap. That would be your best bet to getting one.

I bought a Dirt Devil hand vac at a tag sale last fall and it's looks exactly like the model you demonstrated in this video.

+Max Passa These were popular back in the early 90s when they were made and they're not hard to come by so it doesn't surprise me. Great little vacs and so easy to maintain!

I just got one of these little model 103’s today at Goodwill for $9.99. It works though the bag tends to vibrate off while it’s running. Yet it’s a bear to remove it when it’s turned off. (Go figure!) Anyway, I bought it to vacuum up the Pine-needles off of my runner carpets. It works fairly well for this purpose, provided I do it right away after the needles get deposited, rather than wait until the pine-needles get “welded” into the carpet .

My parents used to have one of those. I just bought a corded dirt devil scorpion plus.

My step grandma has/had a newer version one of these from 1999. It’s essentially the same except it has a gasket on the front that’s shaped more like a Dirt Devil Broom Vac and I think it had a zipper bag that can only take disposable bags. I also have an Ultra in my collection that used to belong to my grandma but I pretty much never use it because it’s so noisy. Instead I use my Scorpion I got for my birthday one year whenever I need to use a hand vac, only downside to that one is the latch that holds the crevice tool in can break easily

Great Video man, but just to clear things up, the brush roll is actually made out of wood and its painted gray to look like metal.

The model 103 drity devil came out in 1984 and it was made until 1987. Ones made in 1987 and beyond say dirty devil on the cloth bag. there was deluxe edition that came out in 1987 and it had a two speed motor, hose kit included, could use disposable bags out of the box, it was colored green instead of the usual red color and it said drity devil on the bag . In the 90s the changed it again.

I had one of these when I was a kid. It was still working when I donated it in 2003. I also once had a Royal metal hand vac model 501. It was similar, but weighed more. The armature went bad in it, unfortunately.

+Matt Jones This little vac is great for small spaces and cleaning furniture, especially since it has the roller brush for agitation unlike many canister vacs with upholstery tools. I love Royal products, they're high quality and work extremely well. My all metal upright is one of the best vacuums I've ever used.
@mattjones7621

I believe you, because I am a Royal owner, myself. Since all of my rugs are put up for the moment I have been using my Kirbys. But, once the rugs go back down, I will bring the Royal back out. It is fair on floors, but the Kirbys work much better on hard surfaces.
@mhtube01
@mhtube01 8 лет назад
+Matt Jones I've never used any of my vacs on hard floors, I would think the Royal would work as well as the Kirbys though, odd. I used my Dirt Devil Simpli Stick on my hard floors which is basically a broom vac/dust buster with attachments. It works pretty well for that and I only have hard floors in my kitchen and bathroom which aren't big in my one bedroom apartment.
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 8 лет назад
The Royal is fair, but it isn't really designed for floors. The Kirby, however, is multipurpose. You can use it in canister mode or straight suction mode in upright position. I mostly use it in upright mode and turn the belt lifter to the 'off' position. At least twice a week, I attach the hard floor pad on the bottom of the rug plate. It has stiff bristles that really grabs the dust and hair off the floors.
@mhtube01
@mhtube01 8 лет назад
+Matt Jones I forget the Kirby is multipurpose because I have no attachments for mine haha. You're right though, those direct air machines weren't really designed for hard floors. I just use my Kirby for the carpets though and it works great for that.

I just hooked a hose to the front port of my 500. I don't have an original hose but I used universal hose that was slightly smaller than the port but wrapped the end of the hose in electrical tape to build up the size to fit and seal inside the opening of the 500. Any idea why I still get no suction at all out of the hose?

I have one of these. Just found it in the attic. Runs fine. So how do you get the cloth bag off? I don't want to pull that obvious tab and find myself tearing something.
@mhtube01
@mhtube01 7 лет назад
Boris Chang You do in fact pull on the tab and then just try to work the rubber seal off, you won't tear anything as it's a well made bag.

There seems to be several model numbers for these. They quit making them. Is there anything new that can replace these?

Where did you find a replacement brush or do you happen to know the part #? I can't seem to find one.
@mhtube01
@mhtube01 6 лет назад
I've never ordered a new brush for mine since it's in good shape. You can rotate the ends of these brushes to get it closer to the carpet again as the bristles wear down. I would say you could probably find it on Ebay though.

The serial number says C92b. This means that this vacuum was made in 1992.

Was this vacuum in mint condition?
@mhtube01
@mhtube01 5 лет назад
Pretty close, it's still in excellent shape. It needed a serious cleaning inside though, the bag obviously had not been emptied and cleaned out in a long time and the motor needed a cleaning and little tune up.

I think it did when it was new because the vacuum is designed for a hose to fit in the front. Finding one with that comes with it though may be a challenge.
