Michael is is 100% right, dirt is a bad surface to train, and race on.race horses in American, Don't hold up like they did 40 or 50 years, speed and drugs have made racing in American, So far behind other countries. The industry needs to be much better governed. To many horses in training. Get rid of all the drugs, close some race track's, Get rid of all the dirt,just have turf,and all weather surface. Bring the industry into the 21first century.

Nick you have answered your own question - the economics are not good enough on dirt to alleviate the issues which Michael talks about, hence trainers and courses taking short cuts. Regulation will simply up the costs and drive more smaller players from the game. More regulation is not the answer!

Two main reasons in the States that horses that run on the dirt get sore is they train going left handed 365 days a year. 2) In the last 40 years in the States thoroughbred racing has gotten a cross over of quarter horses trainers switching over to thoroughbreds. They bring more faster works to they're training. This methodology is physically more demanding and mentally as well..Add the ovals on american tracks and many horses get injured.Quarter Horse racing race 440 yards going straight. In my opinion dirt racing in the states should be focused in dry arid conditions with a mile straight track. With climate change now in Kentucky the Derby has been the last few years been run on a sloppy track.With 20 horses. This is very dangerous and career ending with to many horses racing on the track. I agree with Michael that a synthetic surface like tapeta will be a game changer for training and racing especially in the South and east coast of the USA because we get so much more rain now that we did 40 years ago. It is a safer surface and suits the old style american training with nice longer slower gallops, not fast speed oriented workouts with training that cause more soft tissue injuries on a synthetic surface.

So what about horse's in the 30 /40 /50 that ran 50-125 times as 3/4 /5 yrs olds.ran on dirt no turf held up sound no issue seems to me dirt certainly isn't the problem over medication and inbreeding has weakend the breed PLUS God forbid we say grooms in modern day suck don't care like old time grooms back in the olden days.

Nick if you had a triple crown winner in UK and was invited to run in a $10 million race on dirt anywhere would you go? Yes there is danger of death for horse and rider but there are more deaths on dirt 8 fold. Nick surely you don't have a commercial interest as we had in Australia. My local track was turf and got conned into puting in a synthetictrack which they dug up 2 years later as trainers said they had so many injuries. Re lasex one races without that and one is 4 lengths behind. Now here is a secret from NZ where the cycling team in year -20 years were heading off to the olympics and had all selected riders in to advise that they were to prepare using steroids under a doctors supervision so as to make it a level playing field. Some folk walked out and others were glad to cheat.... like Armstrong..... horses don't need to be constantly drugged and be a loss leader as their form for breeders was artificial. UK trainers often keep away from UK synthetic and mostly 3rd raters run on those tracks as there's nothing to lose.

It's ridiculous the amount of fatalities in general, I love 🏇 horse racing but the more I've looked into this sport I think these creatures owe us nothing yet they are dying every week in numbers more than we know.....
