Dirtbike Adventure Laos (DOCUMENTARY)

When I was asked to go on a trip to northern Laos on Enduro bikes I did not even know where Laos was.
We spent eight days on a round trip in northern Laos starting in Luang Prabang, riding alongside the Mekong River, getting close to the Myanmar, Chinese and Vietnamese frontiers. We rode up to 200 km a day and stayed overnight at small homestays and small hotels.
This film is a kind of documentary with no demand for completeness to show the country and culture in every detail but a motorcycle video diary of this fantastic trip.
It was a guided tour organised by "Offroad Laos Adventures", a business run by Charly, a Frenchman and dirtbike enthusiast with a great love for this country, it's people and nature.
Laos is a landlocked country in South East Asia and shares borders with China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Since 1975 it is ruled by a communist government and continues to rely on foreign aid from western governments and NGOs and more and more from the People's Republic of China. It is rated as one of the least developed countries in East Asia, with more than 75% of people living on less than two US dollars a day. More than three quarters of the population still live as subsistence farmers. In recent years tourism has become one of the main generators of foreign income.
The population is very laid-back but the Lao national character is a complex combination of culture, environment and religion, which is mainly Buddhism and animism.
Some 150 ethnic sub-groups within 50 primary ethnicities are officially recognised.
The landscape is dominated by rivers and mountains, folding the country into a series of often spectacular ridges and valleys, rivers and mountain passes.
Laos was affected very badly by the Indochina and Vietnam wars, being known as the "most bombed country" in the world.
(excerpts from "Lonely Planet Laos")

Laos is pretty underrated...and it kinda makes sense that it's still quite unknown because of its neighbour countries. The country is big and there are only a few popular/touristy spots like Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, and well, Vientiane? We stayed for about for months, not only travelling but also volunteering in a couple of places, seeing and experiencing the local life. I'd say that Lao people are very welcoming and friendly and humble. We loved to hang out with them and miss them all! Regarding money, we felt it wasn't as cheap as Vietnam, but since it's quite unexploited, definetely cheaper than Thailand or Cambodia. Which makes it very affordable for any kind of traveler! I don't know why I'm saying all this in a comment, if you read this far, come over our channel and see another kind of vlog from a different point of view!

This was the 7-day-golden triangle trip, just write them (Charlie) an email, they´ll gat back to you in no time, they´re very nice and competent! I remember the price was somehow calculated for the whole group, so the more friends you get to come with you the less one single participant has to pay...?

I did Iceland with my brother in 2010 with a 4x4, that was one epic trip! do not bother about riding along the Road No1 (around the island on Tarmac) too much, go for the highlands, the smaller F-"roads", it´s gonna be awesome!!!! be aware of the river crossings and conditions, the Icelandic Road and travel ministry provides good info online, take a (real) GPS Ohhhh....I have to go back there... last time I didn´t care too much about filming unfortunately,,, Don´t expect Laos to be technically too demanding, I used to Enduro race, was at Erzberg twice (did not finish obviously but still ;-) so the driving in Laos was very relaxing but doing so you get to enjoy a fantastic landscape and people...

So I recommend august/ september, highland roads will be accessible and more important - doable

Sorry I thought I already replied... Actually it´s hard to say because it was a guided tour and kind of a package including fuel, meals and lodging ;-) pur guide Gai took care of the financial stuff, we only had to care about driving and having fun. Usually I plan all my trips on my own, this was an exception. With the regulations in this country this was the easiest way to do. The guys from offroadlaosadventures are locals and used to dealing with these problems (permits, phone calls etc- most of the places we stayed at you cannot find on the net or get actual data about) So - cost for fuel and meals and lodging? No idea...sorry

@oliverasbach
@oliverasbach 9 лет назад
I don't know about Tibet- this was a trip in Laos- nur in Laos there's no such thing als wild and dangerous animals. The hundreds of dogs are too lazy to care ;-) it's way more likely you kill a dog by running over it with your motorcycle than to be attacked by one....

I think it is a good mix of everything we did and saw - there´s no actual "focus" that´s what makes the video interesting in my opinion - if it was all bikes and trails it´d get boring after 5 minutes
