I have always preferred manual transmissions and always thought I lost too much control in an auto. Rocket, you make a winning argument, and what can I say? I think you are right. If I could trade my 6MT for one of your autos right now I would. Trying to pick my way down a rough grade in 1st Lo last weekend, and having to release the clutch because I needed to go so slowly the engine would stall, I was thinking of your wise words brought to me through RU-vid across the oceans and continents... and again when I stalled and had to re-start climbing some rocks. It took a lot to change my mind on this one, but you've done it. Rocket, you are a legend! And now I have to eat a lot of crow...
loving the build series. be awesome if you could do more tech talks as the rocket left me just wanting more of his knowledge. looking forward to seeing the dirty 30 2.0 out bush
Love these guys, some Quick Numbers here. The average wage in australia for people working in resteraunts is 60,000$ a year (Aus) and an IT guy makes 90k +, wow. That shift controller is 800$ USD for the box and 700$ for the loom, yikes!!! but with their strong currency and job incomes, no wonder Rocket has done 350 conversions on new Landcruisers which cost 80,000$ + (basic interior) crazy crazy australia! (must visit soon!)
Great to see someone so passionate and genuine about his technology! I was a manual for life kind of guy, now that I'm stepping away from performance cars and getting into off-road driving, I really wish I had gone auto behind my 7.4l instead of the SM465 I chose when replacing my existing trans in my Jeep!
I just found your channel this week and have probably already watched about 24hrs of awesome 4 wheeling and camp cooking videos. You guys really look like you know how to have some fun. I wish we had places here in Texas to do even half the adventures you all go on. Please, Keep the videos coming. Can you make a video on how you set your vehicles up for deep water? There are a lot of videos out there on doing the water crossing but nothing really about setting up your rig to make it through without damaging engines, electronics, etc. Thank you.
Rocket cleared up the reason why my brother never seemed to break anything else but the petrol engine in the drive train of his gu patrol crew cab conversion and I think that the engine only failed from over revving while chock full of mud in the engine bay replaced it with a better extracted version and it was just a beast went places people who drove manuals couldn't go
Super smart build! I love the challenge of wheeling a manual, but now that I have an auto, I can enjoy the journey more. Especially with Hill Descent Control I can let the vehicle manage the brakes while I control the speed using the accelerator. It's a dream on long descents in the mountains.
Rocket Rod know's his shit about Auto's, it was great to sit and listen Rocket explaining Auto's and this Dirty 30 will be a huge upgrade for you and jet off road.
I have a manual and what I miss is taking off at the traffic lights and the turbo just staying on boost to 80km h. I have to run through the gears and let the turbo spull every gear shift. I can't believe I am saying this but if I get a new 4x4 I'd seriously consider auto nowadays.
Stevo F I’ve got a y62 patrol and I came from a 79series and I promise you this patrol is better in every way, much more expensive but I spent $7500 on a lift kit, winch and bull bar and that was all it needed
90% over vehicles in North America have automatic transmissions. That being said its interesting to see people doing automatic conversion on their 4wds in Australia.
This is by far the best 4x4 show on the net ! 4x4 fun ,beers , camping in lovely spots, cooking, fishing and to top it off a really nice build project . Not to shabby coming from decedents of criminals, banished to what has become paradise ,once though of as a bad place to have to be living. THE BRITTS MUST BE KICKING THEM-SELF'S IN THE HEAD LIVING IN CONSTANT RAIN WHILE YOUR ALL SOAKING UP THE SUN ON NICE SANDY BEACHES. THE IRONY OF IT ALL IS PRICELESS.
Should also mention that the converter typically produce much more torque to the input of the box, especially at stall than a manual box right where you may need it the most. Starting off from a stop and getting you moving like in heavy sand n bogs
Wow holy shit technology has come so far so fast even in my lifetime and i was born in 1993. Love the channel guy's i live in the USA i want to come check out some of your trails in Australia now your country is much more diverse than i could've ever imagined.👍🇺🇸
Good decision, I’ve run auto box off road for the last 15 years, I agree with all the comment in the video, especially about being transmission friendly, great video, really looking forward to the finished product, thank you from the UK
I have a ‘94 80 bruiser, ( as an over lander ) and another car as an off roader ( Land Rover based, also auto) 4.2 diesel auto VX, running 285 75 BFG All Terrains, makes the speedo accurate. I have driven it in the Pyrenees, the Alps, Corsica Sardinia and Morocco, all conditions, mud sand and rock, with a standard auto box with a large extra oil cooler for the auto box. I now realise I want a tiptronic, better start saving. I have a tiptronic in another car, ( Mercedes ) and would have never thought about one for the the bruiser, this video has given me a lot to think about.
Always wanted to see a build up of the original Dirty Thirty. This is a great alternative. Really like how you are building it. And the auto is a great idea!
Well explained Rocket Rod i like how u explain how everything is done an works in detail 🙂I've been a manual transmission fan but i think it would be awsome to get that trip tronic conversion done to the 07 SR5 Lux And i would deffinately come to u to have it done 🙂
Wow AMAZING this cruiser is going to be the one and only hope you have a lot of fun in it.I am sure everyone is going to be jealous watching you hahaha
Hey guys, I keep looking at the website wanting to buy merch like shirts, hats, etc, and everything is always sold out...which is good, I guess! Are you gonna make more stuff available soon?
I loved my manual transmissions in my 4x4's...until I got my first auto. Game changer for me. I would drive a manual again....but I prefer the automatic off highway every time.
Rocket for sure seems to love what he does and has a drive for it.. Awesome explanations of what and why and how to with these.. Cant wait to see the dirty 30 2.0 up and going.
Love these types of technical videos. One question I've got, and it's more out of curiosity than anything, with a torque converter locked, could you "clutch start" an auto? I do have a long held love for the old 3 pedals, but after doing a bit of offloading in a 1996 Jeep Cherokee auto, I can definitly understand why they are popular for off road applications.
the only downside is less than 50MPH (american) your torque converter cant lock up, and there is always an inevitable amount of slip, that will reduce fuel economy. Even in diesels. Unless you connect a ground fault interupt switch to manually engage TQ lockup at lower gears.
Man I love these videos. Singlet and beer, a true Aussie and a dying breed. 100 years from now it'll be a bloke wearing a skirt sipping on his pina colada. God help us
What "modern" auto could you put in a GQ td42? If none, what mods could you do with a factory one. And how much power is lost through the auto? Ive heard 10, 15 or so percent but is it really that bad? Id like to auto my gq. How much is a modded auto worth?
