I love the main title score and visuals as Harry is walking around the top of the skyscraper with the bay in the background. The drumming is awesome and then that bass comes in!
I wonder if Carol Kaye handled bass on this soundtrack. Carol did a lot of work with Schifrin, including 1966's Mission: Impossible. And if you listen closely, you can hear Carol's fingerprints (figuratively) on this. And in the off chance this isn't her, a good mimic is at work.
Harry: When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross. Mayor: i think he's got a point.
Frank: Yes. Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That's my policy. Mayor: That was a Shakespeare in the Park production of Julius Caesar, you moron! You killed 5 actors! Good ones!
The masochist: you sure you weren't followed?" Scorpio::I'm sure The Masochist, after taking, then counting the money: you want the all of it.. Scorpio: Every bit... Even today, Andy Robinson still freaks me out...
It’s no surprise that Schifrin was chosen to write this score as Eastwood has always been a huge jazz aficionado and can play standards and jazz chords I believe. The man knows how to produce a film and schifrin delivered the goods as always 👍😎
Important film score in his cannon of great film scores for Mr. Schifrin. Powerful and stands alone away from the imagery which is pretty amazing in itself. 1971 San Francisco was a time and a place and this film captured it perfectly.
"Underrated" LMAO. His soundtracks are legendary; as a composer he's generally regarded as a genius. You've either been asleep for decades or you are confused as to the meaning of the word "underrated."
Prologue - The Swimming Pool (0:00) Main Title (1:28) Red Light District (4:56) Scorpio's View (6:45) Off Duty (9:22) No More Lies Girl (12:05) Liquor Store Holdup (14:07) The School Bus (14:52) End Titles (16:50)
@@cnkinnick yes you are correct along with Larry Bunker aparanly they both played together on soundtrack but which one on Scorpio screens I could not say
Great Soundtracks from Lalo Schifrin !!! I was surprised when I heard soundtrack from Enter the Dragon and Sudden Impact there's a long list of great soundtrack from Lalo Schifrin.
One of the best film scores ever, in my opinion. I have the soundtrack on CD. I have a rather love/hate relationship with jazz, but Lalo Schifrin is in a class by himself. The piece at 1:30 is some kind of special jazz in my book. It has so many ideas in it, amazing percussion and killer bass line.
What genius! Aww... I forgot how sad the end theme was. :( Today's sound tracks are tomorrow's classical music. Lalo's are among the best. Great combo of jazz and orchestra instruments with electronica in its earlier years. I especially love this and "Bullitt." Music like this gets me in the mood to work on my (so far) never-ending novel.
When you listen to the music you do not think about personality of creator . I love Miles and in 60 s he also made some movie soundtruck. But I FIND FEW COMPOSERS WITH SAME OR EVEN BETTER POSSIBILLITIES.
That 'squeaking gate' sound effect in Scorpio's Theme adds something to the flavour. Throw in the melancholy female vocals, rhythm and blues percussion, light orchestral score to produce a very creepy yet spot on. There was also a fair bit of jazz for which Clint Eastwood is a fan.
The incoherent female voice and squeaking gate represented Scorpio's disturbing homicidal mindset with the increasing speed of the drumming, electric guitar, synthsizers, horns, and strings gradually driving his murderous impulses into insane speed. Brilliant Schifrin scoring for sinister "bad guy" music.
Lalo Schifrin's soundtrack for Dirty Harry doesn't come up often enough when it comes to film music that the surrounding films would not work anywhere as well without. It's basically the pitch perfect 1970s crime thriller score.
The talent is out there, but studios have changed focus. Occasionally someone like Michael Giacchino comes along to help dispel the myth by demonstrating diversity. If studios got braver and made more original films instead of remakes and reimaginings we might hear more of it more.
music full of psychedelia full of 70s love and peace and also haunting at times and scary too..... Close the lights close your eyes and enjoy the brilliance of his music...
Introduced by a Portishead essential mix circa 1994/5 I think maybe others may remember. Just magical slot in .ina wonderful eclectic jazz orientated mix of great quality and perceptive imagination.when most mixes on Radio 1 u.k. where following popular trends it seemed at least to me 🙂 props Portishead wonderful stuff indeed !!!!!!!!.Also what a great composer this man is .
Another Dirty Harry ultimate soundtrack which is overlooked is "Magnum Force", which in my humble opinion, is one of the best of the Dirty Harry movies.
Totally agreed. Magnum force is the ultimate Dirty Harry and has an awesome soundtrack. Unlike the first part, which has a typical good guy/bad guy dichotomy, Magnum Force is much more diffused and deals with less absolute values. And that great line, where DH replies that he hates the bloody system but there still hasn't been a better replacement - i bet Winston Churchill would sign these words.
Gary Shellgren I have to totally agree with you about this. I come as someone who saw Magnum Force on a double bill with my dad back in 1973 and my dad did advertising for Warner brothers so I had an in to the advertising campaign. I still had problems with the right wing vigilante justice aspects of Dirty Harry but magnum force slightly addressed that issue. The soundtrack to magnum force is superior to dirty Harry.
Why am I here? Was about to watch something else on TV and Dirty Harry had just started. Had to watch (well, listen) to the end of the opening sequence, then had to come back to just listen...
“ no more lies girl , lay some truth on me girl , you’ve been jivin much too long , because a trusted you , my life has turned out all wrong . Just take your mask away , Halloween season is over “ .
