Love it already. The only problem is that you and your talent make any device look and sound so cool, that you probably might sell me a lawnmower, while I don't even have a lawn. Really inspiring. Can't wait to hear your new album! ❤️
@@taylorhickman84 OP-1 might be an overkill and a bit tricky for the beginner. I'd suggest to start with something simple like MIDI controller and a DAW. And you are totally okay to sound terrible or great, talented or not. Music is about your own adventure, so just enjoy it. ✌️
@@evwanders I absolutely agree, apart for the the part where you say a DAW is easy. The amount of options in a DAW can be daunting. That is why I personally prefer hardware because the limitation facilitates the creative juices🧃🤖.
@@sambeard4428 True, but you don't have to dig into everything all at once. You can start with the very basics, like watching 5-minutes guide on youtube. I've been using DAWs for few years and I think I still haven't learned even half of what any DAW has to offer, but I know enough for me to start jamming whenever I want and come up with a track. And I always learn something new only the moment I need it. For me this rule applies to anything I do, like filming and editing. I remember thinking DAWs were hard back in the days too, but as soon as I figured out how to connect and setup the controller I was already in it. And yes, hardware is super fun still! I currently jam with my volca sample 2 and it is pretty limited yet simple. And it is exciting trying to figure out the ways to get around the limitations. It's always an adventure. 😍
Much respect for bringing the hype and discouraging buying from scalpers. It's absolutely worth the wait and worth supporting the one-man team who is making this magic happen. Every dollar counts for keeping it alive :) cheers!!
M8 is the most inspiring music device I currently own. I've made 17 full tracks on it so far, and the goal is to use it as exclusively as possible for each weekly beat this year. Thanks for showing it to the wider world, as it absolutely deserves it! 👏
@@ModalModule just that. Never used a tracker myself. Just flstudio an from that to the mpc1...and this device looks so intruiging and sweet, but the "operating system" ( probably ment UI rather than OS...just goes to show my lack of knowledge on techy stuff 😅)feels daunting to say the least...so just trying to get opinions on the learning curve before I make the plunge...should really just try a tracker software out and find out how I gel with it.
Yey! Jeremy . 24 mins go so fast showing the M8, as someone who has made a few intro to m8 videos you have explained it very well, so easy to get sidetracked and talk about tables or nuances of NTH. All of us M8 users are excited to see it on your channel, love that you been making an album on it!
As an active LSDj creator, this looks amazing. It's everything I love about Little Sound DJ and the Gameboy all grown up into a modernized synthesizer.
As someone who's been really into LSDJ, this little thing is blowing my mind. The interface is *exactly the same*, just with SO MANY MORE OPTIONS. Great review, great primer for the platform, and fantastic tune at the end.
I love these physical applications of trackers! A music tool that founded the digital music making, moving away from the computer itself! Absolutely gorgeous little thing.
I love *love* how much this leaned into the UI design of LSDJ, but through a modern construction. For people with experience on the gameboy, this is gonna feel so familiar just with new added bells and whistles.
Love this video, especially cause it’s reminding me that I really, really need to spend more time with my m8. I’m glad you got one, even more that you made a video and album with it. Truly believe this device is one of the coolest under the radar kits of 2021. So glad to see you featuring it and asking people to support Trash80 for pouring his heart and soul into the project.
Oh hey thanks for showing this off. I used to listen to Tim's music around the days he did Darwinia, and it's great to see he's up to something so fantastic right now. I wanna support what he's got going on, especially since it seems really fantastic.
Always loved the tracker workflow, this looks like if ReNoise was a portable machine with the UI minimalism of smth like ORCA by 100 rabbits. You can also feel how fun the process is just by watching you move around the menus. Honestly the process seems to be just so nice and playful, compared to dealing with any other portable sound machine ive seen so far. The "hands on" part looks awesome too. Thank you for showing it!
yep, Renoise is really nice but making music on a laptop is just not for me, I'm hoping to buy the m8 soon to use it as a portable tracker. I'm familiar with lsdj so it shouldn't take that long to learn the basics^^
it's impossible to not come away from your instrument exploration videos without wanting to also own one. A real testament to your musicality and ability to distil these often odd collections of knobs and buttons into emotive objects.
m8 is my favourite piece of gear I've ever used now. had it since September. it's a thing of beauty ♥️ great video Jeremy, & nice one for the anti-scalper shout out 👍
Got mine back in October and I’m blown away by how powerful this tiny little thing is. I’m hoping to get another to mix between with my crossfader mixer.
i accidentally got my hand over LSDJ last year and M8 looks like a modern Little Sound DJ on steroids. thanks for a great overview, really hope to get lucky and grab an M8 too 🙏
The first thing that strikes me about this device is the wonderful user interface design. I haven’t touched a tracker since Octamed on my friends Amiga he leant me in the 90’s but this is very tempting. The approach of using this instead of browsing/scrolling some app on a mobile is very appealing indeed. A truly portable, usable, but above all fun music making device on the go! Thank you for sharing with us.
For the first time in my life I can finally understand how modern computer technology looks to my parents. You turn this confusing jumble of numbers into amazing music, and as far as I’m concerned it’s voodoo. Thanks for sharing!
oh, the tracker interface (the jumble of numbers) is from the 90s. the modernization is in the tiny package and it IS impressive, but this style of music composition is 30-40 years old.
@@sleepCircle I clicked to reply the same thing. Trackers have been around since the late 1980's. You could make tracks using tracker software on your Atari ST! The idea to put it into a handheld device is great tho
I think what I like better (so far) about the Polyend Tracker is the ability to kind of just bang the pads live. I'm sure I just need to build the muscle memory with the M8. Fantastic machine, nice walkthrough, Jeremy.
You're spot on. The main thing the Polyend has over the M8 is the grid of pads where you can bang out drum beats or play it as a synth. But the M8 is so much more portable, so it's swings and roundabouts. Overall I prefer the M8, but still use find myself using the Polyend more often
Oh hell yes I’m glad you have one of these to communicate it. Since watching M8 early adopters the last few years, every time I see a clip there’s always interesting sounds coming out of one. Very excited
Great video man (and you're already flying around this thing!), so glad you got one of these sent to you! I am looking forward to hear what you come up with. I just got my M8 2 days ago... I ordered a couple of months ago, but it was worth the wait... this thing is mind blowing, and the interface is so intuitive! Today I sat in the park playing with it for almost 2 hours (and hell man, the time went so quick!), and I didn't feel like a total douche... using the Deluge or OP-1 in public still draws too much attention for my liking... using the M8 just looks like someone using their phone or something... so I like that! Stealth beat making! Its interesting that my two favourite devices (Deluge and now M8) are both designed by individual people, not big companies... it really says a lot, and for me proves that the old phrase "too many cooks spoil the broth" is very true!
I have no words. The interface, keys... what a wonderful way to navigate a tracker. And THAT SYNTH ENGINE! I want one, I guess there's more tracker standard stuff in it to love too, but this thing has so many new cool ways to do it. Having worked with the old trackers this is jaw-dropping!
Thanks for this video! Such a wonderful demonstration of the M8. I’ve been using LSDJ on and off for about 15 years and it seems like the M8 really takes what was great about LSDJ and I’m very excited about it. Just got an order in!
yep, I'm exactly at the same position, even with the order. got lsdj some time ago even with an arduino boy and I'm really looking forward to the m8. it has everything I wish my gameboy had years ago!
Great intro video! I just got one of these this week, direct order from Dirtywave. As a rule I never buy from scalpers. I just subscribed to the mailing list and jumped as soon as an announced batch for sale came up. Due to the surprise demand, I think it is possible to preorder now. It is going to take a while to get going. I very much like your comments about how time spent gaming can be spent making music instead. I am very guilty of that, especially long computer RPGs.
I’m actually friends with Tim. We’re not best friends by any means but it’s so crazy/cool to see his device getting attention from big RU-vid channels like this.
I recently got a polyend which I'm really enjoying and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one of these as well. Hardware trackers coming into vogue is probably the best thing for me in music right now.
Oh man, this looks like a TON of fun. I started a new job last month where I have a lot of time just waiting for computer scripts to run, this would be a much better way to kill that time than doom-scrolling social media on my phone.
Trackers are where I started my music production journey, back in about 1987. The Commodore Amiga running OctaMed was my weapon of choice. This device looks amazing! Nice demonstration too.
this thing is so pretty! I love the design of the software. it seems like a very user friendly interface, if perhaps daunting because of it's complexity. It would be nice if it had more keys so you could type in hexadecimal though.
Sick video! Your the main reason i ended up with an OP-1 a couple years back that i ended up flipping and going through a musical drought. Lately instead of my traditional ableton flow I've been on the search for portable or dawless music making devices and currently have the SP404MK2 which is crazy and I'm using records, cassettes, my buddies roland t8 which is hella fun and my MC707 for samples, BUT this thing looks like it might replace the MC 707 because WOW i feel like I'd get lost for hours of fun in this thing. Great vid man this thing looks awesome and I'm glad your making music and not on a switch! haha keep up the good work and inspiration my friend!
This is the video that the M8 deserved👏🏼 After getting into the Polyend tracker I learned that this little guy existed and was really excited for it but hadn’t found a video explaining exactly what it could do. Now all I know is that it’s awesome and that Red Means Recording is still da 🐐. (Reminded me alot of the old school op-1 video era😻). Thanks for another amazing video🔥
so happy you got one of these! can't wait to hear what you do with it. ...also, can't wait to inevitably hire you to re-explain how to make it work once I get one 🤓
I'm so excited you picked one up! I hope Tim gets more business, bc the m8 is an amazing tool, especially for the price! Glad it could inspire you like it has those of us who got to get ones early! ❤️
Mine arrived 2 days ago. I absolutely love it. Getting a feel for hexadecimals will take some time, though. Yes, the M8 is a labour of love. You can see this already when unboxing. The haptics are great and for me the work flow is as immersive as with elektron devices. I did read the concern from a couple of people, that making music on it might feel too much like programming, but I can confidently say no. Very immersive. Thank you for your video. It is a device to fall in love with.
Hex is still hard for me but after I've read on the discord how it made sense to use it, I'm more open to it. One reason is space, with 2 digits it's easier to express higher numbers but it's also handy cause in music, we are used to 4 bar stuff, 4/4 measure. A 16 number system makes that easier
It shows again the degree of possible integration in the world of electronics I doo love Modular electronics so I consider it as a highly integrated modular device of it’s own
This machine looks so cool to take with you on a trip, play around on it and as a bonus actually make full songs! Could definitely see myself using one in the future :)
Watching your videos makes me want to get into making music. After I feel confident enough that I'll make good use of these kinds of gadgets, I'll probably buy one. Your videos are really inspiring. Thank you!
But even if you don’t make “good” stuff it doesn’t matter. Play with this kind of stuff and have fun, low entry devices can be Pocket operators or korg volcas, like the sample 2!
I'm actually old enough to have used the old school trackers back in the day. Sadly, this also means that my eyes would probably have no hope in hell of reading the tiny text on that screen at this point.
Damn it Jer you made me buy the op-1, now I want a deluge. And now... Oh God... Poor wallet. Think I'm going to go diy headless first. I didn't know traker was a thing. You rock
