I, along with many others, was under the impression that the case on the FT-60 was die cast aluminum. A viewer sent me an email that his was plastic. So, I disassembled one to check it out for myself.
PDF of Yaesu FT-60 brochure where they mention "Rugged Die-cast, Water-resistant Case Construction"

I followed along with my FT-60 while watching the video and I noticed two things. One, it's unnecessary to remove the two black screws at the top of the battery compartment. They have no connection to the front half of the case. I believe they hold the black frame to the silver aluminum portion of the case. Also, mine had a gasket between the metal portion and the plastic front that sealed the entire joint between the two parts AND had an O-ring around the antenna connector that was part of the gasket. You video also answered another question for me. My FT-60 has had a crack in the window over the LCD display for years and this enabled me to determine it wasn't worth trying to fix as the LCD is unaffected.

I had to do MARS/CAP mod to a whole fleet of VX150's, which has a very similar construction to the FT-60. I found the 'perfect' tool for removing the nuts from the knobs. Crescent sells a micro needle nose pliers set along with a micro flush cutter at Home Depot for around $15. S2KS5N is the part number. The needle nose tips fit perfectly in the slots and clears the knob making it super east to twist off and on. The micro cutters are also perfect for cutting zip ties without leaving a razor sharp edge. I think Harbor Freight also has a small needle nose pliers, but I have not tested those. When it comes to the mod, I used the same micro pliers to twist off the resistor. I knew it would never be undone and i had dozens of radios to do in a short amount of time. When I re-assemble the radios, I use a very light coating of silicone grease to make sure the orings and seals are supple and slide back in place.

Really interesting video! I'm planning to disassemble my FT 60 for the mars/cap mod. Will ask my perfectionist friend who has excellent electronic diy skills to desolder the resistor. Cheers from Castro's Canada.

Yep, case is plastic, but the chassis is metal. It acts as the heat sink, and when you run them on 12VDC, it can get quite warm. The FT-60 is my go-to dual band, with the VX150 being my go to VHF only.

Hello! The Yaesu FT-60R is a very good walkie-talkie, but it has a serious drawback. This is a very quiet speaker. Please tell me, do you have any idea how to increase the volume of the sound? Thanks!

Hi KC6CQA here. I loved the video but I have ordered a new face plate - and mine is plastic too - because my plastic shield in the front cover is marred and my display is unreadable. It was only $15 from Yaesu but had to have it shipped. I'm hoping it comes with speaker and silicone shield behind the buttons but my fear is it won't. In your opinion am I going to be able to remove and reinstall existing components into a new front cover?

I found the operating manual on Yaesu. I also have it if someone can't get it from Yaesu. If you have any phone repair kits using a spudger will make it easier to take apart the radio. The MARS/CAP mod on the VX-6 is about as easy as the FT-70

Thanks. Yeah, I noted in the description that the PDF manual links are showing. Earlier today the only link in the files section was for the brochure. I don't know what the issue was, but they are definitely there now. Even discontinued radios still have links to their manual PDF's, so I found it curious.
