Another great video , As a mechanic or many years there is a list of parts you should take on any large trip which would include all filters (Air ,fuel and oil) , Hose's and clamps , extra heater hose (usually 5/8) enough engine oil for a change if you swamp the engine , a wheel bearing kit , a cv joint ,gearbox and diff oil ,liquid steel ,radiator sealer , some wire (electrical and fence tie wire) ,metric nuts and bolts fine thread , rags and grease and some wd40 with a good set of hand tools . As for the filter location the aftermarket fuel filter is a pre filter as it is a more course filter element to remove larger particles before the finer factory filter. There is a lot of humidity in FNQ and the fuel supply can gain moisture from this , I would recommend changing a common rail fuel filter at least every 20,000km if not at every oil change as the fuel systems are very expensive and filters are cheap. Definitely need that extra oil , cv joint , wheel bearing set , engine oil , bailing wire , regular electrical wire , and some bengay( for all the pain in the ass you've gone through ) . Just crazy .
Every failure is just a lesson for the next trip and anyway you drove the car home still, plenty of cars don’t come back. The fact you are being honest and telling everyone what went wrong is awesome, most people would hide that or not want to talk about it , and the amount of 4wding your car has done since you bought it most peoples car wouldn’t do that in its lifetime. Thanks for sharing it gets everyone thinking about that stuff because doesn’t matter if your car is new or 20 years old still need to be prepared 👍👍. I only just discovered your channel this morning, but I'm already obsessed. Some 4WD channels can be a little pretentious, but I have to say I've never watched content that is as honest, relatable and down to Earth as yours (as well as informative and entertaining). Thank you so much for your videos, Tyler, I'm a huge fan.
The red particles in the fuel and the water was sort of clear indicates either your fuel tank breather or the fill point is allowing water and dust ingress. Its a pretty common issue and normally takes a while before the symptons show. Fuel up the cape is fine this time of year as they sell so much, and they are on point with the bowser filter changes. You definitely should have the tank pulled out and checked/drained. If there is enough crap in the bottom to be going through the pump sock its going to constantly cause dramas until fully cleaned.
@@Jacobtheunwise That would be a no. Having replaced my Patrol tank with a long range one, I can 100% guarantee that it has no sock. I am the only owner of the vehicle, and the tank unit had never been removed. Try looking at a picture of a Patrol in tank sender unit and be educated.
Good lesson learnt mate. I learnt the hard way and now always replace hoses,belts and wheel bearings whenever I am doing a big remote trip and keep old ones as spares
I drove my old prado to cape york years ago and took a lovely flight home while the truck came home 3 weeks later after getting fixed. Cape york is not a hard trip but deff an endurance trip on a rig and it will find any weakness in a car.
For a Prado it’s definitely a good idea to take a spare starter motor & alternator as the Prado’s are quite susceptible to muddy water ingress in them. They’ve got strong components elsewhere though. Good cars they are.
Sounds like you have learnt some valuable lessons, and as long as you learn from your mistakes and can admit them, you are moving forward and being a great role model for Kai. Cant wait for the trip eps 👍.
As an ex truck owner operator I'd recommend only filling your tanks at servo's that have a high turner over of diesel! Take notice of where all the truckies fill up regardless of the price. Even if your filling jerry cans. Less problems down the track.
in 2020, 4WD24/7 tested the Navara against the other suspects and found the Navara to be below average to incompetent compared to the oppositions. What you have demonstrated to us here is that 4WD24/7 were 100% correct in their findings and l salute you for your honesty in bush testing this vehicle. The bad news is that the 2022 Triton will be just another dismally badged Navara like the X-class kicked the Navara out of the bed due to poor sales and low product excellence, but unfortunatly Mitsubishi cannot kick the Navara out of its bed. Such a shame.
Learnt a lot from this! Reliability is so underrated on a trip because it's hard to enjoy the experience when you're constantly worried about making it home. Kudos to you for telling us all about it!
Having just come back from the Simmo I can sympathise with the level of stress from the remoteness of it all. Was definitely more confident coz I travelled with some mates. I don’t carry a lot of spares but might start doing it for future long trips. Thanks for your candour in this vid mate. I think we all definitely learn after each trip we do.
Bigger wheel and tyre combinations will wear wheel bearings out quicker as you increase the load. This is exacerbated with more positive offset/increased wheel track.
Dont stress Tyler, saw the maintenance that Rocket Rod did to his cruiser after the kimberley trip they just did amd it was pretty huge. All the wheel bearings were cactus, new front suspension, all sorts of stuff. Worth a watch. Reality is these rigs are abused when theyre used. Nothings bulletproof just some hold up better than others when theyre maintained right. Trips where lessons are learnt are never a bad thing.
My take on this is simple, all the so-called problems are due to wear and tear on a 4wd that is being used for it's intended purpose, and I am impressed about how capable the Navara is and would still highly recommend it. The water in the fuel problem is not unusual if you actually go off-road, and the filters did their job, saving a fortune in repairs. I admire your honesty, keep up the good work!

@@Corey-pd3mi the twincab IFS range of 4x4 are only light duty and more of a tourer versus a 4x4 for heavy duty use. Better of with some older model Patrols and commercial range Toyotas like the 75 series for the tougher 4x4 use imho. I myself have a tourer albeit a 4x4 Isuzu Dmax with the added fruit. I know its limitations though. The Cape is not on my to do list.

Doesn’t matter what vehicle you have, if you use it as you do they will all break. You just plan as best you can for the types of breakdown that are likely to occur and carry the spares and tools you need. There is good info for almost every vehicle from people willing to share and this video has added to it. Brilliant video.
Good episode. Sorry for your bad luck, but at least you got it sorted. Just my 2 cents worth...I run a 200 series with the stock filter only. The dash light has gone off twice in 7 years. I always carry spares ($39 @) and apart from 20 mins on the side of the road to replace the fouled filter and clean the bowl, there's never been any other drama. The key is don't ignore the warning light and always cary spare filters. I now also use Fuel Doctor. Although I personally don't use a secondary filter, many people do, and you're advice about thinking how/where to mount it is valid. I've seen many secondary filters do more harm than good because they have interfered with the fuel pressure/flow, which in a sensitive high pressure CRD is obviously less than optimal! Anyway, keep up the good work.
Man you are a champ. You are spot on about preparation as I took what seemed like ages to fully prepare a Landcruiser for the same trip. Even then, I managed to get home with only a few small issues. Good luck and keep up the good work. Ash.
Some people just don't seem to understand that these Thai built shitboxes (from whichever manufacturer) are just not designed for this type of work. Yes, you can take them out there, but it's just going to be a constant stream of un-ending repairs. If you're going to do this stuff seriously then bite the bullet and get a Cruiser or a Patrol, even a good second hand one. So much less hassle and ruined holidays.

ur honesty is so refreshing especially in the 4x4 RU-vid n social media world. they dont tell the viewer bout the damage/breakdowns that happens to their vehicles then the uninformed viewer goes there n all sorts of things happen to them. not naming any channels but u cant do these tracks they do n not have the same things happening to them as it did for Tyler. then theres these channels that tow these massive trailers into the middle of nowhere n not wreck shit, yer the cow jumped over the moon. looking forward to the cape trip series n keep up the unscripted content just the way it is n the way u r Tyler.
I feel your pain mate. Our Cape trip wasn't event-free. An electrical short in the rear of my ute almost had it burnt to the ground. Luckily my auto-elec fitted a circuit breaker which saved almost everything except a bit of wiring. Got it fixed at Bamaga. On we went. Great memories!!

Non toyota vehicles occasionally appear at work (mining exploration). Shit happens with them every time. The under bonnet cracking in this video is a good example. These cars are just not built for continual hard outback work. Hiluxs are the bare minimum. Nirvaras are great farm utes because farm work is low speed and pretty mellow. This is a good well put together honest video. Id love to do the the Cape trip.
Need to look at doing the list of spares you would carry next time, I’m doing the Cape next year with a few mates in my NP300 and they are all in 200 series.I’m thinking i need a 79 or just go shotgun with them 😂
It depends on how set up your ute is, def dont need a 200 series, watch there tears at the bush pin striping they recieve. Height, tyres, underbody protection, a snorkel and recovery gear. And then spares as Tyler said, fuel prefilter, spare filters, hoses, belts, bearings and tools knowlege to change them.

Thanks for your honesty. I have a 200 series and I have also added the second fuel filter. The standard one is 5 micron and the addition is one micron, therefore the standard filter takes out most of the bad stuff and the second filter takes out the very fine stuff. If I had done it the other way round then the one micron filter would have just clogged up with all the big stuff and nothingh would have got through top the 5 micron filter, including fuel. I always carry three filters: 2 X fuel, and one oil. My air filter is a washable one, so can be remedied on site if required.
I had a quick scroll through the comments and didn't see anyone mention this. Pre filters for the fuel system are designed to be before the main filter hence the name. Placing a pre filter after the main filter stops it from working. Pre filters are are 150 - 30 micron rated and their main use is to catch water. You factory filter will be 2-5 micron to catch anything that would damage the pump or injectors, additionally there are pressure and flow sensors in some factory fuel systems designed to monitor fuel leaving the factory filter, placing filters after these can cause the ecu readings to be inaccurate which is why the warranty can be affected if placed after instead of before. Also the electronic water detection is good but it can fail easily and if you rely solely on it you may get bitten. Just check the glass bowl when you're doing your pre start checks. Disconnecting the battery will save you from frying your headlights on negative switched circuits.
Another great honest video. Wife and I did the trip solo recently in a 2003 1hz powered Landcruiser - old technology. Not fussy about fuel......no problems, no stress, no repairs.
I lived in Cape York for years way back in the 80's and the amount of people who had similar issues as you would surprise you, when i first went there it was only a track from Lakeland Downs, 2 wheel tracks through the bush all the way to Weipa just about, in my brand new 1976 HJ45 Cruiser )))
Mate its not all your fault. These things happen. Every car will get faults, that's just wear and tear. All apart of the adventure, bad luck played a huge part. At least you got home safe. Good honest video, respect you for the honesty.
Don't be hard too on yourself and don't listen to the roasters. This video has made me contemplate maintenance more than ever and your humble way of learning from this experience will probably help more people than just me to think more about maintenance and preparation. Definitely interesting and again your humble attitude makes it way more palatable than a lot of other similar content.
Bloke, the hell you put your car through it’s expected that things wear out. Nothing went wrong with the car itself mechanically so all the issues really are only bad luck and missed maintenance. You should be proud that you seen it through and didn’t go home when it got hard! Legend
Hi Tyler, mate that video is tops, your honesty and openness to the issues you faced are commendable. We have all been in a pickle before and that feeling of stress when you're 100'skms from nowhere is terrible. I've certainly learnt my lesson about preventative maintenance. Our last cape trip took about 6 solid months of planning and mechanical prep work, irrelative of what vehicle you own and how good your prep is, there's always repairs when you get home from the tip. Don’t worry about the backlash mate, it is just refreshing to hear the honesty. I got up there with wife and 2nd car in mid May, super wet still and so much fun. Driving a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport so can relate to a lot of the challenges with the Nav. Absolutely loved it and definitely want to go back. Learnt good lesson in Nolan’s about auto hand brake, oops. Will post next couple weeks, wait til you see Cypress creek bridge early in the season, it was about 8 logs, haha. Love your work!
Love the videos and love the honesty. My Nav. is a little older than yours [2016] and I arrived at a very similar set up to yours several years ago. Using mine in the High Country I was surprised by its capability; most of the time I let it do its thing rather than really driving it [even Blue Rag], {courtesy a slow recovery from stomach surgery}. Seeing what you do with your Nav. is a great encouragement and shows what these vehicles can really do. To get the best out of them the key is modest modification and thorough servicing. At nearly 75 I still enjoy getting out on the tracks. PS I didn't start four wheel driving until I was 60!. Looking forward with pleasurable anticipation to your upcoming series.

Your not alone mate, my fourby was the most reliable out of our group and it had a fire under the engine bay(main wiring harness rubbed through) stuffed wheel bearing rock through the window and side steps almost fell off.Our camper trailer brake drum exploded into 2 pieces. We had to cancel 2 weeks of our trip for repairs,1 in Mareeba and 1 week in Cairns. The one fourby we thought would break down the most and was a real bitsa car(bit of this bit of that parts)never missed a beat.We also had a mate in a new patrol y62 his car is still in Cairns 2 weeks after breaking down and he is in NSW now but cant go get his car due to covid lockdowns. On a cape trip there is luck involved.... Awsome video bloke.

Great video Tyler. When I did the Cape I had the following woe's. Polyair bag hose rubbed through, bonnet surrounds cracked, radiator bust valve blew and had to instant metal to seal it. Car stopped dead and took 20mins to realise it was a fuse, ripped out a brake line so only had three breaks until I could get one flown into Weipa, took spare shocks and replaced in Weipa, numerous flay tyres. Luckily we were with a four wheel drive club so lots of experience and spare parts within the group. I also got bitten by a spider and had to drive 3 hours along the Frenchmans track to a get it looked at. The nurse said if I was going to die I would already be dead so just gave me a tetanus shot.
I love all your videos. Really down to earth and tell it how it is. Doesn’t seam at all staged like some other 4x4 videos are. My budget doesn’t allow me to have anything flash or top of the line. I have an 05 Pajero. This vid was really helpful to me as I can only afford to get stuff I really need. Secondary Fuel filter sounds like something I need that I had not thaught of, especially for the longer more remote trips.

I wouldn’t worry about criticism Tyler. Just learn from it. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. You push the Navara pretty hard over difficult terrain and it performs well. So long as you learn from it you will have knowledge that the critics will never have.
When I worker at head office tech the ipdm common to be fried with spot lights wired backwards. The wheel bearings common. Nissan only built them to take a 65-70kg bullbar. So anything weight wise over that overloads the front axle. Cracking common especially cause of the snorkel. D40 used to do it as well.

Just goes to show, I spent a few months doing all the mods you talked about, had my friend whos a mechanic go over my entire car. I did from brisbane to the top and back including the creb and a lot of very tough driving and not a single mechanical issue or breakdown. All my mates were saying the old mitsubishi wasn't going to make it but even a well maintained 10 year old car with 200 000km on it did it no problems at all. Probably comes down to a bit of luck too!
You've learnt a lot Tyler No doubt you flog your rig. To put it in perspective, a serious off-road dirt bike rider, changes gear box oil every ride, cleans air filter every ride, coolant ever 4 rides, wheel bearings each year or as needed. Preventative Maintaince helps a lot.... But things still fail, doesn't matter what brand.

Great video. Thanks for showing us your issues. I did the cape in June in my Dmax and had problems too. Cracked windscreen, DC charger died, bash plates came loose and got completely bent, long range fuel tank cracked a weld and started leaking (fixed with soap). The cape is tough but worth it ten times over. Look forward to the series.

I notice that most 4wds don't leave the bitumen. The hardest obstacles they see is the speed hump at Mecca's. Doesn't matter old or new 4wd the more off road you do the more services you need to perform
Just a heads up that as a aboriginal man myself. Not sure if you have heard the stories or babinda boulders but definitely wouldn’t suggest swimming at that creek as there is a old story that is attached to that place and to go with that there has been 19 deaths there since 1959. Your happy to google the accent story if you want since it is a big thing in that area.

One thing ive learned in over 40 years of travel on three continents is, NEVER take travel in out of the way places for granted, "p.p.p.p.p".= proper preparation prevents pisspoor performance they said, never mind how I learned that, (I had some doozies! :). Have fun keep it safe.
