This is the story of Western Airlines Flight 2605. On the 31st of october 1979 a Mcdonnel douglas DC 10 was on its way from Los Angeles international airport to mexico city international airport in mexico city the plane had 89 people on board, including 13 crew members. The plane departed Los angeles at 1:40 am local time and the flight there posed no issues for the crew whatsoever, a normal early morning flight. As they closed in on mexico city, mexico control cleared them into their airspace. At this point the mexico control handed the plane off to the mexcio city international tower. The controller briefed the crew about the airport and the weather, It was quite foggy and the crew would have to bring the plane in for a landing with very little visibility. And the weather was not getting better. The weather report at 5 am put the visibility at 2-3 Nm but by 6 am the visibility was effectively zero. The controller informed the crew that theyd be landing on runway 23R, that was the active runway at the time.
The plane lined up for their approach onto runway 23 R as the plane was on final the controller comes on and informs the crew that they were a bit to the left of the centerline. The pilots acknowledge. They continued on. With fog enveloping the airport the controller checks in with the crew to see if they could see the runway, but the crew tells him no.. they could not see the runway lights through the thick fog. As they got closer and closer to the runway the crew realized something that they should have realized a long time ago, they were heading right for runway 23L and not 23R.The wheels touched down on the runway and they pushed the throttles up as far as they went in an attempt to go around. They pitched the nose up at about 10-11 degrees, their efforts seemed to be working. The huge plane slowly started to climb out, but thats when their luck ran out. Runway 23L had been closed for renovation and so had a lot of machinery on the runway. The right main landing gear slammed into a truck full of dirt, destroying the truck and fatally injuring the driver.
The truck had 10 tonnes of dirt in it and the impact ripped the right landing gear off. Large pieces of the right landing gear was sent flying and it impacted the right horizontal stabilizer. Making the plane a lot harder to control. The plane had lost a lot of its control surfaces. The flaps on the right wing was damaged and so was the right elevator. But the plane was airborne. The plane started to bank to the right. The aircraft was banking right so badly that the right flaps slammed into an excavator that was parked next to the runway. The cab of the excavator was all but destroyed. The plane continued on but it was starting to bank right more and more. The right wingtip dipped so low that it struck taxiway alpha, scarring the pavement. The right wing at this point started to break apart. Investigators found a bit of the right wing embedded in taxiway alpha.
Up until this point the plane had more or less been airborne. They had flown the plane for about 2500 meters or 8200 feet, but then their luck ran out, the right wing hit a hangar which sent the plane crashing into the building itself.
Of the 89 people on board 73 did not make it.
Flight 2605 had landed on runway 23L instead of 23R with disastrous results. Listening to the ATC recordings and the CVR they hear the controller clear the plane to runway 23R on two

@@kamilhorvat8290 Well, runway numbers are determined by their directional orientation (their compass heading). I.e., Runway 23 is aligned with a compass heading of 230 degrees. So changing the numbers isn't an option. But they were clearly designated "left" and "right" so that shouldn't have been a problem. I'm troubled by the fact that the approach lights for 23 Left were on, though....

The main problem is that runway 23R didn’t have ILS - and with no visibility at all, the apraches has to be done Into the ILS of RW23L. This is not a big deal to trained pilots, but as it is clear it is too bad to a tired crew. We cannot forget that in this case the problem of the language must have had its role.

Going around is a psychological thing many pilots refuse to do sadly. Actually they were supposed to head for runway 23L first and the do a sidestep maneuver to runway 23R since only 23L had instrumentation for landing. With zero visibility it would have been impossible to manually land on 23R. But they never received clear instructions on this sidestep maneuver. Another pilot expressed who had made the same landing earlier said it was very awkward even in good weather. And a crew member who survived said that usually a close runway would have big red crosses clearly indicating that it’s closed. Instead the left runway(not sure on this detail anymore, I need to read the flight attendants book again who survived, E.E.Valenciana) might have even had the normal lights making it look as if it’s not closed but I’m not sure. So this wasn’t solely the crew’s fault. There seems to be a lot of misinformation regarding this accident since Mexico City didn’t want the bad press and for tourists to stop coming there. It was easy to blame the crew and the pilots since most of them died. Damn, I need to read that book again. It’s called “Jumpseat A Tale of Twisted Fate”

With 55 years of flying as a pax in prop and jet I have experienced many subtle occasions that were borderline disasters but we're expertly avoided by hands-on flying by the Cptn & 1st back to safety. It was a miracle that the plane was so empty. It was a red-eye, or as they called it in Mexico, a "tecolote" (owl). IRCC, tickets were cheaper on an LA-MXCity tecolote. Mexicana and AeroMexico at the time also had tecolotes (I flew on the Mexicana flight once), the flights were usually packed. Anyway, that DC-10 could have had 200+ passengers that night. Still, so sad. I lived in Mexico City at the time, and on the TV news they played the sound track from the control tower, where a controller says in a dead pan voice: "se estrelló el Western" (the Western crashed)

I didn't know about this one, since it had happened in Mexico City... In the US, I had always thought the DC-10s were still all grounded, pending aircraft design reexamination and maintenance log investigations after the AA Flight 191 tragedy 5 months before...
@theMoerster
@theMoerster 4 года назад
The grounding ended within a couple months of the AA 191 accident. They were down for inspection of the engine mounts. Since the fault of the O'Hare crash ultimately was not the plane but the poor maintenance procedures by AA, they just had to be sure others hadn't done the same thing. They eventually did other upgrades as a result of the O'Hare crash but didn't ground the whole fleet for those.

It's important that the fog was getting worse and they were supposed to sidestep to the correct runway with visibility. Since they were landing in the opposite direction of the runway, 23L was on their right side and 23R was on their left side. Did that come into play?

The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) recorded the Captain becoming hysterical when he realized he was about to impact equipment on the runway.

I met an amateur pilot at a LAN party that talked about how hairy it is landing in 3rd world nations. You essentially have to know more than the controllers directing you. In many countries controllers only exist to fulfill minimum requirements and often only got the job by being grandfathered in. They don't have nearly the same level of professionalism. Just keep that in mind.

Im sorry but am i missing something....? It was an ILS approach to left runway with a sidestep before 600 ft over to runway right visual approach. They did not see the runway and pilot error caused the crash. They werent misaligned, they failed to go around at 600 and landed ILS runway left crashing.

Yeah that blood-curdling scream is pretty standout doesn't matter whether it's Aviation or any other type of disaster. But yes the most shocking thing is the lack of information I used to pride myself on pretty good detective work on Old magazine newspapers not so easy now. But if there were survivors why are they not telling their story at all? I realize there's a lot of trauma but I have never heard of a plane crash where there are survivors that nobody spoke out.
@coreyguy5216
@coreyguy5216 2 года назад
Your information is a little misleading it was the control towers fault they told them to sidestep without telling them what a side step was the original flight plan was supposed to be the runway that was under renovation they they were never notified until the approach to sidestep to the right but it was too late at that point they were already in descent
@Al-ih1en
@Al-ih1en 2 года назад
Technically, it IS a 2-3 left approach, (using 2-3 left ILS), then they'd need to have runway 2-3 right in sight and line up with its central line. God knows who misunderstood who.

Why do they have two runways designated "23"? That just sounds needlessly confusing.

runway numbers are designated by their compass bearing and with 1 number from the end removed so this runway in particular is in compass heading 230

I dunno, if the decision height came and no runway was in sight, I'm not sure it matters how badly ATC was instructing them (speaking only in terms of liability -- clearly any problems at ATC *must* be addressed) -- that's a hard abort whether or not the runway's open, closed, or imaginary.
