The Star (1952) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #TheStar
Bette Davis plays an aging movie queen, a woman who'd had it all: fame, fortune, men. And who would do anything for one more chance at her former life. Margaret Elliot (Davis) hasn't had a role in a movie for years. Her husband has left her, taking their daughter (Natalie Wood), and her agent can't get her a part. The people Elliot had long believed were her friends abandon her when they learn she is penniless. Only Jim Johannson (Sterling Hayden), an actor who once worked with Elliot and who has always loved her, stays with her.
Directed By Stuart Heisler
Starring Bette Davis, Sterling Hayden, Natalie Wood

Highly underrated movie. This is one of her best.

This film is one of Bette's best. It is basically about an actress like Bette who is getting on in age but still insists on playing an ingénue. For some reason, this film is not as well known as some of Bette's other films. The film does have a cliché ending which sort of weakens the impact of the film.

Well, we didn't go to Bette Davis for subtlety, did we? Whew! Bette Davis doing Bette Davis doing Bette Davis.

Unless you watch her work from the 1970's and onward. I suggest Death on the Nile and The Whales of August and her TV movies and miniseries.

Now this is freaking brave stuff; Davis parodying herself at her most mannered. Bette, impersonating some drag queen, impersonating her?! She was way too smart for it to be anything else. A Great under rated movie from her difficult middle career. Best part is when she is drunk on a binge with her Oscar; and you wonder why "Hollywood" thought she was difficult. Show 'em up Miss D. Show 'em up!

I believe she's actually parodying Joan Crawford in this movie. Bette says "bless you" to someone during the screen test, and that's a phrase Joan always used.

Davis can even master doing a “bad” screen test. No greater dramatic actress than Bette Davis. She had an incredible stage presence! My favorite dramatic actress! ❤️

This movie was said to be loosely based on Crawford but the irony is Crawford roared through the 50s with some excellent films. And 1952 she made “Sudden Fear” -one of her best in my opinion

What a mess she made of her "screen test". Bette is playing Rosa Moline in "Beyond the Forest" which was campy enough.

Great stuff, watching her appraise her own supposed bad acting. Perfectionist that she was, Bette probably experienced that kind of scene early on and never let it happen again ... unless deliberately as here!

INCREDIBLE ... Wonder if there's any truth to the rumor of Liza Minnelli testing for 'Evita'?
@jeremynv89523
@jeremynv89523 Год назад
That was true circa 1981 or 1982. Both Liza Minnnelli and Olivia Newton John were considered, and even Barbra Streisand. Liza came in ahead of the other two because her voice was better suited than Streisand's and better in general than ONJ. I don't think any of the three actually got tested for the role, they were merely getting discussed.

This movie based off of Joan Crawford. Bette took the roll because she couldn't stand her.

Actually, it was more fitting to be about herself, considering her career decline during the 50s.
