1:17:40 My mum's told me this story tons of times about how she was picking strawberries in a field like that, then while she was cleaning them at home she went into labor with me but refused to leave until the berries were cleaned because she _knew_ my dad wouldn't clean them
This was a good episode, and Stephen is quite right about medication and sell-by dates. Mostly they are just put on there for legal cover because the pharma companies can't absolutely 100% guarantee that a medicine will be effective beyond a certain date, because then they'd have to leave them lying around for 10 years and test them before selling. I visited one such company once (I work in chemistry) and they told me they have to try to simulate the passage of time by subjecting pills to lots of heat and harsh conditions. But the worst that will happen is almost always just that it will become less effective, not that it will somehow decay into something toxic like expired food can!
It's also the fact that (At least in America) outside of baby food there is no regulatory body for EXP/Best Used By dates, they are placed their by the company as a means to sell more product. I regularly drink milk that is weeks past it's date because: 1) It still tastes/smells fine 2) Milk is pasteurized, thus all harmful bacteria has been killed off. You can technically drink chunky milk and it won't have an adverse effect on you (I am not advising this, if it doesn't taste good....toss it) But most products are labeled well in advance before they would actually be "bad". So I am with Stephen in not throwing stuff away. Use your own judgement and experience.
@@comicbookguy89 that’s not at all how food safety works with dairy lmao. Don’t give out food safety advice if you don’t know what you’re talking about.
The one we always used to do to parody cinema adverts was "Hi, I'm a successful footballer...and I want you to buy this Nokia." Probably the silliest real life one though was that one where a Nissan Juke drives past Batman and they make absolutely no attempt to actually link it with "The Dark Knight Rises" in any way.
1:20:13 I love how Tom was so unsure about pronouncing Jarritos correct, gets it correct, then Jarod and Stephen give two VERY different pronunciations. (Also Jarritos is S+ Tier Soda)
Well we learned a lot during the podcast. We learned about Stephen’s expired medication and how expiration dates work. We learned about food and fruits and how to end the podcast and very awkward way
SO! Regarding the expirations thing and also food. 1: Expiration dates are typically Best By/Sell By dates. They're usually good for around a week after that, but you should probably use them soon if you can. 2: Pickles last a VERY long time. Like...... SUPER long. Vinegar is super good at killing bacteria and fungus in those concentrations. Worst case scenario, your pickles start getting squishy. 3: A lot of expiration dates exist because of New Jersey. That is not a joke, NJ has laws that requires things have a two year expiration date at the longest, even if they don't expire. Like Salt. 4: Medications DO expire, but they expire by way of the active ingredient breaking down. It will lose effectiveness over time. That said, a lot of pills use Lactose as a carrier material, and that can also break down over time. 5: Garlic is best when fresh because otherwise, it starts to lose potency. If you can get it from the farmer's market, do it, because it will be a LOT stronger than the grocery store stuff. This is why the recipes for "Add a clove of garlic" always have you adding like 12 cloves of garlic because it doesn't feel like enough garlic. 6: Roasted garlic is great. It's a very mild flavor, because garlic loses flavor as it's cooked off. Good for spreading on things. Cut the top off of a head of garlic(or a dozen), put them in a muffin tin with some foil under to keep messes in check, put some olive oil over the top of each head you just cut the cap off of, head upward, and bake for a bit(google the time and temp), and when they come out, they will be squeezy goo and delicious. 6.5: This is ALSO why your garlic isn't as potent as you think it should be. If you want the earthy cooked garlic taste, add your garlic early, if you want the sharper slightly-nose-burning Wario-Burps garlicky smell, add your garlic later in the recipe.
I have a skin condition so I have to be careful about fabrics and pretty much *everything*. Laundry soap is a big one. I tend to avoid scents in general. Bubble baths are either like baby bubble bath or when I say feck it. I'll deal with the consequences later. Uuuuh, it also flares in response to stress and hormones. Best thing is I have no idea what it is and I have seen medical professionals about it. PCP says psoriasis but the dermatologist says eczema. I just try to manage my dandruff as best I can.
@@ricardovillon1189 i’ve been worried about him since he worked himself so hard and didn’t sleep long enough that he was having auditory hallucinations on a plane…and that was like 6 years ago lol
That pepto story reminded me of what happened to me. Similar situation, my stomach was upset so I went to check if we had some pepto, we did have some of the liquid one, but it expired in 2013 and was all congealed. So ya I threw that out
Whats important to remember about experation dates is while some amount of scientific goes into them they're mostly there so that you can't sue the company that makes the product
I can relate to the medication thing. We had some cold medicine that expired in 1996 and we uh. Definitely had it way more than that (I think it was cold medicine.) Only thing is that we didn't know it was expired.
I love Nips Only Podcast: The Starfield of Podcasts! 59:10 for the Waffle Crack story. Anyways, my Waffle House story is when my mother and I stopped at one for breakfast while we were in Virginia. At exactly 8:00 AM, the radio played the national anthem and we all stood up and saluted the flag. I still wonder if that’s a nationwide thing or just that one Waffle House that does it.
Yeah, I looked up the different versions of them. And yes we pronounce them as "Harritos" when its spelt Jarrito's, they have Pineapple, Fruit punch, mango,
when I heard about paintball from boys in my high school I thought they were making it up. I strongly suspect that paintball is a real thing by now, but I'm still so certain that paintball is the most made up pastime I've ever heard about in my life.
You ever see guys set up out on the street, 50/50 chance you get poisoned or that THEY'RE THE FUCKING BEST. Usually the best, but still feels like a coin flip.
Don't have Carls jr where I am, but I do know they used almost that exact advertising strategy in Japan around 2015. They picked the right girls for it.
Jerod doesn't curse on-stream because he tries to maintain a family-friendly image for his own streams (since there are kids who watch) and so he avoids swearing out of habit. He has mentioned swearing in private though.
I doubt it. Jon said all that needs to be said about it on Twitter. Even if any of them do choose to talk more about it, Disc Only is too goofy of a platform to do that with.
@@longliverocknroll5 It is a bit of an elephant in the room (in both cases), so I understand the curiosity. But how they feel about it isn't any of our business. We just need to be mindful of that and respect their privacy.
