@@TempleofBrendaSong The difference between fascism and extreme ownership is you can choose to forego the sage wisdom, and your peril will be your own doing rather than fascist dictators creating your undoing involuntarily. @@bmoraga01 Thank you. Normally, i would consider a moral cause when you fight to safe your people from danger and fight to keep the weak who can't defend themself safe. That's textbook moral cause right? But we all know if we look deeper into the facts behind WW2 and the role that propaganda from all sides played in this, wasn't the real reason why the US was pulled into this. I understand why they chose to fight Japan tho (that's a different case). I do give them credit tho for holding back communism from countries like that of mine which i am thankfull for. But like i said, the real reasons were kept away from Americans because otherwise they probably weren't so motivated to fight in Europe. And don't get me wrong; i don't want to insult or degrade the american soldier for his sacrifice by stating all of this, i'm just pointing at the goverments in charge at that time.
Wow, I really needed this, I have fought through really serious medical conditions, and 5 careers. This last accident put me flat on my back in bed due to a doctor's mistake on oxygen for 2 years, the world went by, family members died, and I couldn't go anywhere. At my doctors, the consensus was, this was my life, they had killed my lungs and also caused brain damage. I need a ventilator at night. My brain no longer breathes for me automatically. That was the final straw that they waited so long to tell me what was wrong, there wouldn't be any change, no cure this was my future. I decided I was going to make it into something more than just laying in this bed, sucking on an oxygen hose and watching RU-vid. Working hard I finally rehabilitated myself up out of that bed. It took 8 months and went back to doing what I needed to do. I lasted about 6 months. Then I was overwhelmed by financial & personal events, my car quit, had to start taking the bus, my home became a storage unit because of the deaths of members in the family, all of the things that were left behind ended up being stored in my home. That didn't help me because I'm ill, I can't move them, I thought in my mind. I'm on a medication that has made me gain 60lbs! I worked very hard to get back my health from the previous accident. Getting control I lose the weight I had gained almost 260lbs. I got it all off without the ability to exercise or any suregery, it was willpower & eating for ones genetics. Being extremely disabled, everyday I fight to stay out of a wheelchair & off a walker, I've been prescribed them, I have been trained to use them, but I know that once I give up, I will not be getting up. At Christmas this year, I just got tired, I was supposed to be finishing some projects at the house. I am now in my 5th month of trying to finish something that could have been done in 2 months, my motivation is gone, and I can't seem to find the discipline anymore, Boy, really needed this, I needed to remind myself of who I was, who I've been and what I've been able to do. I can still do it just because I have a hose attached to my nose, doesn't mean that I can't just means I'll do it a bit differently. Maybe I'll be a little bit kinder and gentler to myself on the way. Thank you, Prager U, I really enjoy your videos, thank you for being honest and educating someone who basically has been educated probably well, beyond any reasonable need. Never did finish college, kept going, there was so much to learn and enjoy. Have the equivalent of 4 BA's in totally seperate disciplines, do have one AA got the paper! Keep working to open the minds of tomorrow, you won't know till the truth is used what a great job you've done.
That last part is very important. Be kinder to yourself and learn to manage your body's limitations, so that it in turn can still allow you to do the things you set your mind to. Stay strong, friend.
"Whoever is faithful in small matters will be faithful in large ones; whoever is dishonest in small matters will be dishonest in large ones." - Luke 16:10.
@Mike Jones A lot of the things he said in this video are said in the Bible. Discipline leading to freedom for example, Jesus says if we follow him we will truly be free.
Agreed, but I'm sure one of the last things Willink would want to be called is a "motivational speaker" . A disciple of discipline maybe, but screw motivation, discipline is apparently where it's at.
"You can’t count on motivation but on discipline..." this reminds me of the "Don’t follow your passion" video by Mike Rowe. Both are "dirty" but profound truth.
I know people that count on motivation to get them to the gym. They show up for a week and then you never see them again three to four months later, extremely out of shape. I have made my trips to the gym a routine by applying discipline. I discipline myself to the gym. Trying to stay motivated to go to the gym is futile. It works for a few days and then, lack of motivation disrupts the cycle.
@@barchetta575m Same here brother. Had a bad week having not gone more than once just this week and its shameful. Jocko's speech made me remember most of the time I got things done was when it was based on discipline. Not motivation. And that's changing now for the gym. Thanks for your words.
@thewonderpig97 - Those muscles were built before this video was posted, making the original post pointless. The act of weightlifting instead of sitting on the couch after seeing the video is motivation.
thats what he talks about if you get motivated by this video and not to be disciplined. this video is useless then you must be disciplined by the PRINCIPLES! and this video got worth
I genuinely don't think he knows what motivation means, because discipline is not the opposite of motivation, they aren't even mutually exclusive. And it's actively counterproductive to tell anyone to not get motivated because that's they same as telling them "don't want to do this, but do it anyway".
@@Dracopol You're the type of person who sees the pretty fire in the fireplace and takes it out to put it in the middle of the floor, then is surprised to find your house burned down.

How are you able to write so coherently, despite the fact that you are in 2nd Grade? Did you gain the discipline to teach yourself how to write at this level?
I learnt something new I didn't know motivation was just an emotion .I read that most people when the hit the 40ish stage of life stop learning because they feel they have learnt enough lessons to navigate life successfully

That's a key thing liberals and a good chunk of libertarians don't seem to understand. Freedom comes with responsibility and it's not just freedom to do whatever you want.
@@bladeswelove so true, I am certainly guilty. In America, we have the option to be comfortable, which is great, but it leads to laziness and lack of purpose if you don't have self-control

Couldn’t agree more! The wrong choice is always the easy choice. The right choice is the one thing in the world that you would never want to do. But it always seems to turn out great!
@Tucson Jim Perhaps the best determinant of the usefulness of the opinions in the video is to note how well, or how poorly, they have served the author.
“...No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11, NIV)
One of the many great lessons from Jocko is that a good leader doesn't have to rely on giving orders for getting things done. If you ask for something to be done, the people around you should do it because you share the same goals.
It's a little disturbing that there haven't been any comments in years. This short video has helped me actually *get things done* more than any of the countless hours I spent reading self-help books. Whoever you are, *you need to watch this.*
@Tucson Jim 1- Who told you that killing people is a honor? It is only necessary in cases like the war. 2- it doesn't matter if it is "easy"(high probability) to die in the war. It is important that some men put their life on the line to protect others. Otherwise, we would be afraid to be invaded every minute. 3- A man risks his life for other people and you call him "useless moron"? Don't you have any gratefulness or sense of decency? He made himself admirable, and you made yourself the opposite.
@Tucson Jim damn dude, get a life. You're angrily commenting on an educational video. You ask other for the academic achievements but say "Loser you has zero respect for truth". Show me statistics that most soldiers die from suicide. It's tragic that many think that's the only option, but that's why we need to fund psychiatric help for vets.
@Tucson Jim "the same guy who said that being a failure at school was a honor" who the hell said that? Even if this fact you brought REALLY is a thing doesn't make it right to disrespect the guy's history AND people here, so you're still talking nonsense. Now you have to get some things clear: 1- How am I a loser? 2- How I have no respect for the truth and the "American" values(freedom of speech)? 3- How did I spit on the American Constitution?
@Tucson Jim *sees lots of statistical superstitions taken seriously like a case of cognitive dissonance* ah, ok. Now I understand. You're not just a random pseudointellectual troll. You're one of those weirdos. Half crazy, half delusional. Okay, boyo. Playtime's over. I ain't listening no more. You need help, not debates.

100%. Probably the greatest lesson her is "motivation is fickle". Discipline will get the job done on the days you don't want to do it, and there will be LOTS of days any of us just don't want to do it.
Since I saw this video I've lost 12kg and I do now +20 work hours monthly ( now I'm doing 220h of work ) I'm not kidding. I consider myself a humble person, I have confidence but had very poor discipline. I went to the army for 10 years. I had IMPOSED discipline. And I was awarded multiple times for my work there. Now without a leader and with no imposed discipline, I got my life off the rails. Now with self discipline in a matter of 2-3 months I got results. And people around seems to be more friendly. This video became my motto. My bible. Thanks
@@khyati7733 it took a couple of months. The first thing is to recognize that something is wrong and prepare for the change. It doesn't happen instantaneously. And it's a daily struggle. This sounds like "start by making your bed in the morning", and this is very true - life is hard. Now if I could only make my teen listen and believe it !
There is a simple reason this sounds similar to the 'make your bed' guy. They learned it in the same place. Both SEALs, both spent time in that same mud, and swimming with those same sharks. Both rose to the double rare position of Command of SEALs. Both now retired from the military, Both now continue to serve in other ways.
Imho when it comes to teens, now is the time to have them live with the consequences of their actions. For example, you set a curfew for 9pm, at 9 on the dot you lock the doors and turn off the porch light. They stay out late, they can find somewhere else to sleep for the night, but it went be in their nice comfy bed. Things like that...
