I miss penny candy. For the young people that have no idea what I’m talking about: on the bottom shelf were individual wrapped pieces of candy that were one penny each. There were a variety of flavors that you could mix and match. After school, while walking home, we would stop by the convenience store and buy some penny candy. This started in the first grade.

Chicken Dinner was named this way as a promotion that eating one of these was like having a meal. This was during the depression, and Hershey was promoting Mr. Goodbar as a meal replacement candy bar. Since the candies were roughly 5 cents, people could afford it over an actual dinner. How the times have changed. That Brach's display at 00:23 used to be a staple of supermarkets; if we were lucky, we could get a bag as our parents shopped, but that was usually out of the budget. The Neapolitan coconut candies were a favorite in my household. While some places we'd visit would have the old-timey penny candies (usually gift shops in places like Harper's Ferry), the 5-cent Bazooka Joe gum and candies were still common at 7-Elevens in the '80s. Saving our lunch money could get us a Pepsi and a small bag full of candy. On a military note, the Mars Bar that was packaged in early (brown bag) MREs wasn't bad. It was just a solid chunk of chocolate and was often chalky colored by the time I ate them (late-'90s, most were five-plus years old by then). I recall getting some M&Ms in MREs that had '92 Summer Olympic promo codes. While not candy, the dehydrated fruit was pretty good either reconstituted or eaten dry like a candy bar. For throwback candies, Tractor Supply has a decent selection, and I just noticed that my employer (Bass Pro Shops) has a candy display that seems to have some older brands.

I used to buy Marathon bars when I was a kid. The bad thing about it was because it had a lattice shape and the chocolate layer was thin, when you took a bite, the chocolate crumbled and fell off the bar in little pieces.

Rhett, I enjoyed your discontinued candy video. I remember a candy that I absolutely loved years ago that you couldn't buy in a store. You could only buy this whenever a school, church or social club was having a fundraising event. The candy was in a round tin box that you opened with an attached key, it was named Katydids it was chopped pecans and caramel with a milk chocolate coating. Have a fantastic weekend. Take care 🐎
