My discussion.sco... website is a Discourse forum where I maintain my show notes and other articles that I publish. Discourse can be a challenging app to host, yet it is the most popular forum software. In this video, we learn how to host Discourse in an Incus Container.

Great tutorial, I am little bit confused, because i am new to Incus, but have the following question: 1- what is the benefit of nesting containers, would it be easy to just use docker on the host machine 2- if the container use some kind of volume(s) where the content is stored, where can i find it 3- how can i mound directory from host into docker that is inside Incus container 4- if I need to use Incus container to deploy my application, how can mount folders from host into Incus ( like the docker way: volumes ) Thank you so much for your efforts, sir.

If you have a server that you want to dedicate to Discourse, then this video is a moot point. Thanks for the kudo. 1- Docker is invasive in its use of IP Tables and routing. NEVER run docker in parallel on the bare metal level of the server alongside of Incus. 1A - The benefit of nesting a docker application inside of Incus is to have an isolated environment that doesn't conflict with UDP/TCP ports used by other docker containers. 1B - By having a dedicated address for an Incus container, it is like having another server and so 1A is one issue and docker poor practices with VFS components don't damage other applications. 2 - Docker containers use "mapped volumes", otherwise docker data is volatile and not preserved between runs. 2A - Incus containers each have their own separate file system and look just like a dedicated system. 2B - Incus containers are like Virtual Machines except that they do not virtualize the hardware and instead share the kernel from the Linux server host on which Incus is loaded. 2C - You can either "ssh" to an incus container or "incus shell" to the container. You really need to watchmy tutorial "Incus Containers Step by Step". 3 - In my tutorials where I use docker applications, the Incus container is the docker host. So, when you use a docker volume, it is pointed to a folder inside the Incus container. 3A - Any Incus container can be "exported" ie...backed up and then imported on another Incus host. To access the data in an Incus container you can use any protocol that you would use in any Linux OS. 4- You can mount folders inside an Incus or LXD folder back to the host level of an Incus/LXD server. In practice this is rarely needed. I have many videos covering this technique. You should regard an Incus container as being pretty much in function like a Virtual Machine. The difference is containers don't need to execute a manual installation because containers are created from images. Also, Incus containers share the resources from the host kernel making them faster and more effcient. Please, Please, please join the chat at chat.scottibyte.com/ as mentioned in every one of my videos. Carrying on a chat or writing a book in RU-vid comments is not desireable.

Outstanding video, Scott. You are getting better at this after years of practice! :)

As mentioned in the video, it took me 60 builds to get it right. I did end up with a reliable and stable install though.
