A very happy 2020 to all and here's our first video of the year coming back on a young guy we met during one of last stay in Singapore, Keeran Janin. He recently launched his own watch brand called Avantist and it was a nice opportunity for us to portray what it takes to actually do so; how you fall into it, the different steps, finding the right the partners and so forth.
And the result is a very interesting one with for instance a very original tourbillon timepiece called Majesté. This watch features an original sapphire case, well actually a sapphire ring held by a titanium chassis, which let's you see the tourbillon from a very different angle.
Enjoy & Viva Watchmaking.

That video shows exactly why many watch lovers are losing interest on new watches and moving into the vintage, or small companies that are run by watchmakers like Kudoke, Akrivia and Kari Voutilainen! As customers we are all tired of large companies that use the same method as Avantist to create its products, "When you have no constraints, you can do anything you want. For example, we looked at a typical client persona and they would be wearing, for example, a brand, Richard Mille, and the materials that we're using right now are carbon , sapphire and tourbillons. We look at the weights. We looked at the different watches that are really popular at the moment and we charted out all the different weights and we searched out, charted out all the different materials that have been used too. We said, this is the material that we need to use, this is the millimeter that we need to have". He can use 100 different marketing researches, do exactly what he believes that his clients will want, but thinking like that his products will never be as desirable as a Richard Mille. Because, even though I am not a fan of Richard Mille, Dominique Guenat is someone who is willing to take risks, to create something daring and new, I don't believe that he decided to make the "Bonbon collection", for example, because his marketing team decided that Bonbon inspired watches was the new Hype! I also believe he should say who was the best "watchmaker, designer, case maker" that he was talking about!

Great video, interesting topic, but that brand sounds terrible. Cliff notes: some guy wanted to start a watch company so gets suppliers, a designer, does a bunch of (simplistic) marketing research on what is popular today (not even having the balls to place a bet on what today's preferences will mean for the future - e.g. trend analysis), and then asks suppliers and designers to spit out a watch based on their collective ideas and some magic brunei design dust. That isn't art, that's expensive fast fashion for watches. Aesthetics aside, Journe, De Bethune, Akrivia, MB&F, there are many independents with a point of view, artists who have truly sought to create something intentional, purposeful, and daring. Telling suppliers to come up with whatever they feel like and mashing it all together is just lazy. This feels like a low rent RM or luxury MVMT, take your pick.

@RunningFast

@@davidjb3671 hahaha, I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one! I felt a little bad pooing on the parade of congratulations in the comments but this actually really upset me. Just read your comment and "soulless" is exactly right. This is the exact opposite of what you would get from someone like Biver and any of a number of leaders of authentic and successful high horology brands. I think it's great for people to see how a watch can come to life from nothing. It's inspiring to a degree but this is the half assed shortcut way to do it. It's like sushi for dummies vs Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Can anyone make sushi? Yes. Can you make the egg sushi like Jiro without years making the same thing everyday to perfect the art? No. At MVMT prices this is fine, like supermarket sushi. If you want to roll in the 5,6,7 digit range for your watches I want to see a few decades making eggs. Or jeez, if you're just a marketing company, be awesome at that. At least recognize soul and craft are important in this industry and tell me a story. Don't tell me you just went shopping around Switzerland and slapped together a watch. Don't tell me you just looked around to see what's popular and mashed it all together. Tell me there's a wizard behind the curtain that has a soul and divine inspiration and he barfed up this aweful thing and if we don't love it it's cause we're too poor and stupid. I don't love RM but I respect the magician and the magic trick.
@davidjb3671
@davidjb3671 4 года назад
@@RunningFast Glad we agree on this. I was going to mention something about RM, but decided I don't know enough about the brand's history to judge their provenance and horological value. However based on what we see in social media and who mostly buys them it's pretty clear that wearing one is like holding up a sign announcing "I'm a rich sucker..." But if these guys are hoping to be the next RM they're going about it the wrong way.

not sure if his pieces struck me as one of a kind, but it is definitely a interesting to see pieces like these pop up and this method of going about the watch business. The same heritage and history that made traditional Swiss and German brands great and fine watch making great is killing the industry. Already in 2013 richemont started cutting jobs, watchmakers included, due do the stagnant industry. Despite the numbers, the industry is not getting enough new clients, and new releases (by this I mean a new design, not another “new” nautilus) usually don’t make an impact. This is not sustainable. The industry is so aloft that I just don’t think it’s allowing enough people in. It is not like people usually voluntarily dive into a industry with a history that could be written into a encyclopedia. Remember how that when for your high school history class. This is precisely why Rolex and rm could make an impact when they entered the market with they more mind I say down to earth marketing and high visual impact. Like I said, I don’t know much about this brand specifically, but the spirit behind brands like these might actually help artisans continue their craft for a bit longer. However, it is not just the business end that need to change, the consumer mentality need to change too. And it did before, think quartz crisis and how the Swiss made a come back.

it seems like another rich kid who wants to be Richard mille. I saw the name of the video and thought maybe i'll get some advises on starting a brand. but hiring some guys to do all the work, creative wise and fabrication wise, for you is not counted as starting a watch brand. I can buy a movement, a case and a strap online and making a dial. that doesn't mean I have started my own brand, or more specific in the eyes of people from the watch comunity this video was a little mistake that can be forgiven (in my opinion) you have such good, creative and interesting videos.

It seems he just looked around at what’s popular and “trending” and decided to make what he thought people would buy. He just built a more expensive “swatch,” from what I see here.

So you don’t want everyone to buy you watch you only want a specific type of customer😑 and to be honest how much are these watches costing for you to be a brand new watch company because I feel if you’re a brand new watch company who doesn’t have any rapport with the people then you should be using high-quality materials such as gold platinum and what not because you’re not real legs are not Cartier don’t be charging people $20,000 for stainless steel bro for $20,000 let me get some gold with some diamonds since you want to go straight for emptying everyone’s pockets let the watch actually be worth something because your name is it really worth anything so now I just have this piece of stainless steel that costed me $20,000 Unlike Rolex worth it $20,000 I know for sure I will get that back your watch if you at least make it out of precious materials it will be worth something because if everyone doesn’t like your watch and I spent that much money on it and no one’s going to buy it back I will not get my money I will be sad with stainless steel on my wrist😂

"We put a great story behind the watch..." [we made up some feel-good marketing BS out of nothing] No history or tradition, no years of studying the arts of design or the watchmakers craft, and not even any real innovation in materials or movement technology. Note that he went to Switzerland for a WHOLE YEAR, not to study watchmaking, but to study the industry and find who he could rope in on this soulless project. Resulting in a watch designed by a committee based on market surveys. In a short video this encapsulates almost everything that's wrong with the current explosion of fast-fashion micro-brands. It's just a MVMT or DW for the rich and stupid. Don't worry though, it'll be gone by next year or change it's name to something else. I'm not usually so harsh, but this really irritates me.
@Skyrise369
@Skyrise369 4 года назад
You are being too harsh on the man, in as much as I love watches I'm under no illusion, as you seem to be that watch making is not a primarily a for profit venture. The virtue signaling on your part maybe an oversight, whereby you fail to recognise the fact that most Swiss brands were recycling ETA movements at a premium for many years . So I say give the man a chance until the free markets choose to expunge his brand due to there being no value, being gained by his clientele.
@RunningFast
@RunningFast 4 года назад
@@Skyrise369 Art and profit aren't mutually exclusive. To be a business it has to make money but you can choose to make that money in a way that respects and advances the craft or in a way that only uses it.

@@Skyrise369 Maybe you're right, but for example I have no problem with people using ETA movements in new and exciting ways. Just look at what Ressence have done - both stunning designs and amazingly innovative movements on an ETA 2824 base. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but at least they tried something different. Since this guy claims to be an engineer (full disclosure - I am one too), couldn't he at least have tried some novel engineering approach?

@@RunningFast most midtier Swiss brands are not advancing the craft, but we don't question their right to exist. I personally am not supporting the brand but I won't condemn them for creating a unique brand outside of Switzerland. If we apply this snobbish attitude to something like the automotive industry then Germany would be the only country deemed by purist to manufacture 'acceptable cars' .
@RunningFast
@RunningFast 4 года назад
I have no idea what you are talking about. 1. Avantist is not mid-tier, those toubillons are pushing $250k. I do expect more at that price point than a Tudor. 2. I didn't question their right to exist, anyone can do whatever they want, and I can express my excitement for some and disdain for others 3. I didn't say anything about where they are made or condemn them for creating a brand outside of Switzerland. I would love to see more brands outside outside of Switzerland. Ming is doing great stuff, would love them just the same if they were not only designed in Kuala Lumpur but made there too. In fact, Ming is a great example of a passion led company making amazing watches with the help of many vendors and a team of experienced passionate people that took a risk and designed something new. Great stuff. 4. Snobbish? I don't even know what you're on about. Avantist proudly advertises themselves as a Swiss brand (.ch) and I don't care where they are made, it's still setting $250k on fire wherever it comes from.
