Discover Effective Methods For Eliminating Yellow Jacket Nests And Uncover Unexpected Surprises

Today I do a follow-up on my Yellow Jacket nest video that I published a few days ago. In the previous video, I examined a Yellow Jacket nest that I found in my yard and experimented with a method I devised to rid my yard of it. I emptied a can of foaming insulation into the hole and hoped that it would encapsulate the nest overnight. It was not to be and it only neutralized 1/2 of the nest. Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted the video clips of when I examined it and later dug up the foam ball.
This video picks up after I discover many more nests and work out a surefire way of destroying the other Yellowjacket nests. I also dig up a colony and examine how it is constructed.
Plus, I suprise a sleeping fox on my walk in the woods!
About Aquachigger:
I enjoy metal detecting for historical items like gold coins, relics, silver coins, and other buried treasures. I also metal detect for gold and silver nuggets and even meteorites. I like to make videos that promote my choice of lifestyle that includes outdoor adventure,
metal detecting, yapping, searching for river treasure, SCUBA diving, exploring abandoned places, hiking, caving, caring for animals and pets, and observing the things outdoors that often go unnoticed by most people who are not familiar with outdoor adventures and nature. I keep my RU-vid "Aquachigger" channel family-friendly and hope you subscribe if you like my style.

It's VERY ironic that you made this video (part 1). That day, I find a nest with my son in an old stump next to my house. This thing had been rotting for about 8 years. We put firestarters on the hole and it slowly choked them and burnt the stump. The next day, we dug it out easily since the stump was so rotten. It hadn't gotten to a bowling ball size, but the whole irony of just seeing this had me scratching my head.

We have a similar problem in Southern Australia with the closely related and introduced European wasp (Vespula germanica). Same tactics - petrol/ gas down the hole, people tried Sevin over the years but again not the best. Wine grape and apple season lots of pickers get stung. Dept of Ag has issued permits for meat baits ( dog food) laced with fipronil which can be placed in hanging feeders in autumn when the wasps are foraging like mad and this also works. You said there seemed to be more around this year. They like mild dry seasons. A good cold snap in summer / early autumn and wet weather seems to knock them back for a season every now and then !

Hey Chigg, I agree, gasoline is the only thing I've found to easily and effectively eliminate a yellow jacket's nest. Thanks for digging in and showing us what goes on beneath the surface.

Hey Chigg, two words, diatomaceous earth. Put it in a powder, puffer and puff in the hole. I ended up using that and the yellow jacket nest between the flashing and window of my house. After using 10 cans of spray, which didn’t work they just kept coming back. The diatomaceous earth does take a couple of days, but it will work. It dries them out basically.

Chiggs, I can’t believe you reached in that hole with your hand. You are right, they are the worst I have ever seen this year and aggressive. I hope you find the one by your pond, that was a big opening they created. Thank you for the tips. Stay safe. We need a good freeze here soon so they go away.

Thanks for the interesting and informative video. From what I know, a lot of things-like dish soap, etc- don’t work well with wasps unless you completely flood the nest. In which case, it’s more the water drowning them. It’s actually the vapor of gasoline that works so well because it spreads and saturates into all the nooks and crannies. Wasps breathe differently than we do-they can’t hold their breath. So they can’t get near the nest without breathing it, but at the same time, they can’t survive without their queen. They can’t help returning. As you mentioned, the new queens could possibly survive by escaping before the fumes killed them. All the males of a hive only leave to mate with new queens, so they will typically all stay in there with their queen and die. I would say that it’s better to take care of nests before fall, since that’s when new queens leave to find and establish new hives in the spring. You will likely have more hives show up in your property next year, but they won’t be very obvious until they get well established.

That was a very interesting video. I live in Illinois, 13 miles from the Wisconsin border. We had a hornet infestation 3 years ago. I, like you, lit mine. They are gone. This year has been a spider infestation. Everywhere and different breeds I have never seen. My arm was swollen twice it's size from one. It looks like a black widow but has white markings on it's back.

Nice thing with Brake-Kleen is you put the tube on it and youcan spray it 5 feet or so but I think with the size of the 1 by your pond I would've put the whole can in and then shot it even with a BB gun if I had to.

Strong hold hairspray ( freeze hold is best )won’t do well on a huge nest. But if you spray it on a new one, it freezes there wings so they can’t fly. I also take a small can camping for when a rogue one gets in my tent. Been using this method for years.

Worst thing a homeowner can use are landscaping mats. When we bought our home, the previous owners put 'bootiful' plants all around the place, using that black landscaping material. Hornets love it, as if they can smell it. They dig under the mat then build their nest. We had two on a 100' x 100' property, each the size of a basketball. Dawn dish soap works well I'm told. Myself I used kerosene. Hated to do it but they have the entire world where they can put a nest; they don't need to build them on my property.

Interesting layered structure that they build. Homemade Napalm, I mentioned it before. Gasoline and polystyrene packing noodles. They will keep dissolving and when they stop, the gas looks like treacle. Pour it down at night and set fire to it. The mixture burns with an intense heat.

Liquid propane works well also. It's heavier than air so it goes down and is -50 degrees F. I have used my 20lb gas grill tank, turned upside down to get liquid, with a hose attached into the hole. The ground will turn frosty and the bees freeze. Don't do it close to a house.

Man, there are few thing I fear greater than blundering into a yellow jackets nest - talking about unbelievably ferocious and aggressive. Their attitude is, "Mess with me, you mess with my whole FAMILY!!!" And boy, are their stings painful. Interestingly, they aren't terribly aggressive away from the nest. Most dangerous is when they have a nest in the ground you can't see, or if the nest is in high grass and you mow over it.

I have my front door open on hot days and I've killed 4 very aggressive hornets in the house in the past 2 weeks; those things come at you. Apparently, my landlord has a nest in the wall of the old fruit cellar/woodshed, whatever it is, I'm really not sure. It's made of wood so I'm not sure gas would be the best thing? I can see where this is going to be a problem for me next summer and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for getting a hornet's nest out of a wall? Thank you Chigg 💖
