Sam is a really genuine guy and has done us and Hornby proud here again. Had some quick chats with him early on with TT and lots of integrity and help👍
Fabulous. It’s wonderful to listen to a fine young man who is so enthusiastic about his creation. Very well done Sam! I look forward to seeing and purchasing the finished rake of coaches and a matching loco. Would love to see these in TT120 scale too! Very best wishes, Adrian
Really great to see this level of openness about the development. I think I'll put in a preorder for the full rake having seen this and being on the fence.
Looks like a beautiful set - 25 years ago I attempted to build the Kirk coaches set - needless to say it didn't go well - just didn't have the skills and tools to finish them to the high standard they needed - never thought I'd see them ready to run at an affordable price
Agree! This was a dream set ever since I first read about the Coronation coaches but didn’t believe I could do them justice myself. It’s clear Sam’s spent a lot of thought on these models, and the honesty of the challenges faced, and I’m excited to see the rake on my layout!
WOW WOW WOW. Just so amazing how far "TOY" trains have gone in the last 70 years Worked for Beatties of LOndon when it was in High Holborne under Col Beattie a REAL model shop over 50 years ago Anything decent was German but now so great Spent two years building a large model railway in my garage with everything computerised - Coaches where a nightmare with two much spacing now this is amazing WELL DONE Sam Sold it all when i realised i didnt want to "Play toy trains" it was the modelling i wanted As we said can never have enough locos~ WE have now moved But would have loved thids set #
I think sam has done an excellant job of these coaches, and I think the wait for them will be well worth the wait. If they are going to produce more of these coaches they could do a Silver Jubilee set Silver grey and set of the West Riding in 2 tone blue like the coronation set. After the Second World War all the sets were split up and used as seperate coaches in other trains by BR.
I hv had the pre-order in on these since the dawn of time, just based on the actual coach photos. As an engineer what has been thought about and subsequently designed has far exceeded my expectations. So much so, I can see me getting the further rakes in other periods when announced. Also, its good you explain all the design history; in my previous job as Bus Dev Manager, once you explain what goes into a product, and the subsequent benefit to the customer, the cost becomes a secondary issue. Or in this case, if you had to build them yourself from scratch, and decorate, you wouldnt be able to do it even for the RRP.
If im not wring i think Sam designed the Hornby GBL vans which were fantasti coaches with loads of details on that sold out pretty fast when released these LNER Cooronation Coaches look absolutely brilliant i think these will be brilliant coaches when released
Hi Sam, great work, I’m not an LNER fan, but these are excellent, well done with the couplings too. Hurry up and get these to market so you get get back to some important LMS stuff 🤣 PS love that look at 1:05 😉
Might I suggest that you create a set using your new HMDCC technology? It has been a while since hornby has produced a DCC set and it could save hornby the cost of an expensive DCC controller
These already look good and they're not even painted yet. Really hoping that there will be a Silver Jubilee set in the future as well. Will the twin coaches be able to separate for storage or will they need to stay as a fixed ~600mm (I'm estimating) length?
This will be way out of my price range, and era really. But great to see the designer going through this and demonstrating his pride. I'm sure the set will look fantastic
Obviously much painstaking work has gone into developing these carriages. This is a credit to Sam and Hornby. What I am curious about is how readily convertible are these carriages to EM gauge. Accurascale / Irish Railway Models have developed locomotives and mark 2 carriages which though set at default 16.5mm gauge are readily convertible to EM gauge and 21mm gauge (Irish gauge in 4mm scale). Maybe my query could be answered.
Only six of the usual nine coaches were used on the record run. The observation car was not used. The dynamometer car was coupled to the tender before the six coronation coaches that were used. It does not seem to be recorded anywhere that I can find which other two coronation coaches along with the observation coach were missing! Hope this helps. Regards Jim
