Though relatively new in cultivation, Schefflera have been growing in the subtropical forest garden at Abbotsbury for decades. These exotic shrubs, often originating from mountainous regions, have been thriving in the gardens warm coastal woodland microclimate. Schefflera plants are loved for their tropical looking palmately divided leaves, making them a highly desirable plant for gardeners looking to recreate a tropical aesthetic in their own garden. Though many Schefflera species are too tender to be grown outdoors in climates such as the UK, there have been a number of forms discovered that thrive in cooler climates.
Abbotsbury subtropical gardens curator, David Pearce, shows us some of the incredible Schefflera growing in this UK tropical style garden. The specimens are some of the largest we have seen in cultivation in the UK, with species that are brand new to the Grow Paradise channel.
