In the Middle Ages, Scopello emerged as a strategic location for tuna fishing, due to its proximity to the numerous tuna shoals that migrate along the Sicilian coast. The town's name itself is believed to derive from the Greek word "skopelós," meaning "rock," alluding to its rocky shoreline and the imposing Capo Scopello promontory.
The first documented tuna fishery in Scopello is attributed to the Normans in the 12th century. Over the centuries, the tuna-fishing industry flourished, attracting wealthy landowners and merchants who established the tonnara, a complex network of enclosures and facilities used for catching and processing tuna.
The most notable tonnara in Scopello is the Tonnara di Scopello, a striking stone fortress perched atop the cliffs. Its construction began in the 14th century and continued through the 16th century, transforming it into a sophisticated tuna-fishing operation.
The tonnara's peak period was during the 18th and 19th centuries, when it employed hundreds of workers and processed thousands of tuna annually. The tuna was highly prized for its meat and oil, and the industry played a significant role in the economy of Scopello and the surrounding region.
In the 1950s, the introduction of motorized fishing vessels and new tuna fishing techniques led to a decline in the traditional tonnara system. As a result, the Scopello tonnara ceased to operate in 1984.
Despite the decline of the tuna-fishing industry, Scopello remains a charming and popular destination, attracting visitors with its stunning scenery, secluded beaches, and rich history. The tonnara, now a protected monument, is a reminder of the town's maritime heritage and continues to be a popular tourist attraction.
Today, Scopello is a popular vacation spot, offering a blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and lively Mediterranean atmosphere.
