Welcome to this exciting journey exploring the 3S Cableway Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt, the world's highest 3S cableway, which has been transporting visitors to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise since 2018. Designed by the renowned Pininfarina studio, the Matterhorn glacier ride offers a luxurious and comfortable experience, complementing the existing aerial tramway. This innovative system significantly boosts capacity, accommodating an additional 2,000 guests per hour.
One of the standout features of this modern cable car is the "Crystal ride" cabins, adorned with Swarovski crystals. These four special cabins provide a breathtaking experience during the nine-minute journey. After three minutes, the glass floor clears, revealing a stunning view of the glacier landscape below.
The new 3S cableway Trockener Steg, completed in 2019, is the highest three-support cableway in the world, reaching an impressive 3,883 meters above sea level at the Klein Matterhorn. This engineering marvel enhances the connectivity between the Swiss and Italian ski resorts.
The design of the three supports was a complex undertaking, each with unique characteristics requiring thorough study. Challenges included low temperatures, challenging terrain, snow and ice loads, and fierce winds reaching up to 300 km/h. Of particular significance is the span between the second and third supports, a remarkable 2,700 meters, offering a thrilling “leap into the void” for passengers.
The structural design process ran parallel to the construction planning, ensuring tight deadlines were met. Each support, ranging from 47 to 55 meters in height, was meticulously crafted to prevent any issues during high-altitude assembly. The optimization of transportable weights and the search for detailed improvements allowed each assembly phase to be carefully planned.
The completion of secondary structures concluded the construction design phase. Service staircases and maintenance walkways were crucial, requiring detailed analysis of the junctions with the supports. The total estimated weight of the steel structures is around 425 tons.
