Meet our extraordinarily skilled wheelwright, Tim Hoffman, as he masterfully set the spokes into a unique custom wooden hub.
Components are all hand-crafted here at Hansen Wheel & Wagon Shop and this particular wheel required a rare design of square spokes.
Tim started by turning the large hub on a lathe, into which mortises are cut to accept the tennons of the spokes. The spokes are constructed out of ash to give the wheel strength.
After the spokes are set into the hub, the wooden felloe sections will be placed around the outside, onto which the steel tire is set. It is the purpose of the steel tire to provide stability to the wheel and compress all of the components into the center of the wheel - the hub.
The hub is then bored out to accept the boxing (the bushing on the inside of the hub that fits onto the axle) #custom #wheel #woodenwagonwheel #hansenwheel #bore #hub
