Today on Cocktails After Dark we explore the fascinating history of Gander Airport's iconic Big Dipper bar, once a bustling stopover for the world's rich and famous during the 1940s to 1960s. This video dives into the golden age of aviation when propeller planes made Gander, Newfoundland, a key refueling point for transatlantic flights. Discover how legends like Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill, and Frank Sinatra sipped cocktails at the Big Dipper while planes refueled, and learn how to make the bar's signature cocktail using the infamous Newfoundland Screech rum. If you've ever been curious about Gander's aviation history, old-time airport bars, or unique cocktails, this video has it all. Plus, find out how "Screech" became a part of Newfoundland's folklore. Whether you're a history buff, cocktail enthusiast, or simply curious about this legendary airport, you won't want to miss this journey back in time. Grab your shaker, some rum, and let's make history-one drink at a time!

Thanks Glen! This whole episode was a real blast from the past. Right from the old CBC clip with Knowlton Nash (dig those wild spectacles) to that great placemat with the cocktails. That seemed to be the go to placemat for every restaurant back in the 70s and 80s. Loved it!

Yup, my grandparents flew from Europe to New York in 1949 for their honeymoon. I'm pretty sure, they had a stop-over in Gander and, having the privilege to have known my grandfather very well, I'm pretty sure they visited the lounge for drinks and a cigar 😁

I guess I was one of those VIP people in 1971 I emigrated from Great Britain, and the first place we landed as we were low on fuel, was in Gander so it holds a very special place in my heart, after Gander it was New York and finally Toronto. I have travelled many miles, worked in a multitude of jobs and now live outside Vancouver. I just finished a bottle of Screech and when Come from away was in Vancouver my wife was there, and she said it was funny the friends she went with didn’t know about the Gander incident. Great video Glen cheers, I do like my dark Rum.

What a great video! I did see Come From Away earlier this year when it came to Scranton, PA. Gander played a very important part on 9-11 (yes, THAT 9-11) and the villagers were so very supportive of all the passengers & planes that were forced to land there when they "closed the skies". Glen is right .. if you ever see it available near you, GO!! It was fabulous!

In 1944, my father flew from Gander Field to the Azores to Casablanca on his way to Foggia, Italy where he served in the US 463rd Bomb Group. He often talked about Gander Field. I’m sure he was not able to visit the Big Dipper.

There was no Big Dipper there in 1944. That was a postwar creation when the airlines started up their commercial transatlantic air passenger services. Do you know exactly when he flew through Gander?

One Friday evening after getting out of class from my video production course in college, on a whim, a buddy and I hopped on a plane and flew from St. John's to Gander. Upon arriving we went the the bar and I immediately got I.D . The problem was I didn't turn 19 (legal drinking age) till the the following day. The lovely lady looked my I.D, handed it back right away and kindly told me to put it away. She suggested that if anyone asks, I didn't show her it till after midnight then proceeded to hand me a rum and coke. I never knew what was in, maybe it was Screech.

My Newf uncle used to make screech and it was pretty close to gasoline and def not 40 proof😅. When my ex husband and I were dating …the day I introduced him to my family up at the cottage , my uncle plied him with some. Well about an hour later we couldn’t find my husband and went on a search and found him asleep on the beach half in the water with waves lapping over him on a very cool late night evening. We had to carry him back and warm him up by the fire and yet he was still snoring happily. The next time my husband had some at New Years we found him doing shots of it in a glass votive that still had candle wax in it 😂 Apprently the new wife doesn’t let him drink any rum esp screech 😂
@martinboote8175
@martinboote8175 День назад
Just an fyi, proof is measured by half percentage points, so 40% is 80 proof. This is why anything over 50% (100 proof) is called overproof

I haven’t bought a bottle of screech in a few years… I’m concerned about “New Taste” on the label. I bought my kids to the terminal in Gander a few years ago… the old guy at the airport tried to convince me that the regular terminal was the historic one. He was delighted in my disappointed face. He then brought us to the international terminal. Also, I’m still waiting on that jigs dinner Glen!

The most fascinating part is that the CBC newscasters don't have a stereotypical Canadian accent. For example, I don't hear the raised long 'I' sound. I thought they were speaking a remnant of the Mid-Atlantic accent at first, but the 'R' after their vowels is strong, borderline exaggerated.

Given that the LCBO carries screech, would it be worth grabbing some for the sake of the cocktail? (Obviously everyone's threshold for when they need a bottle for something different would be different, but do you have a hand-wavey answer?)

I'd probably just grab whatever dark slightly sweet rum you already have on your shelf and give that try first. Though I was pleasantly surprised by the 'New Formula' Screech; it's like they are actually trying to shake off their lower shelf image.
