I think this has to be your best video to date FatherFish. You're doing a great service to help all of us and to blow holes into the sinking ship of conventional fishkeeping!!!
I really like this channel, I am very lazy so having an aquarium that takes care of itself is perfect. I barely have to touch mine and its great! Not only that but my aquarium looks 20X better than most others, I got into the hobby through the plants since I loved terrariums, turns out an aquarium is just a very wet terrarium if you set it up right. The great thing is that many of these aquarium plants are great in terrariums when grown out of the water.
I'm so glad I did the father fish deep Substrate filled with plants. 2morra will be a week and I can see the plants are starting to look nice. I got about 9 baby electric blue acura fry about 3 months old in there and they are loving it all I've been feeding them frozen daphnia very little bit at a time. I'm so grateful I found father fish RU-vid channel and converted to the deep Substrate cause I was getting tired of gravel and always having to gravel vac my tank.
Ultimate satisfying aquarium setup is father fish principles. I have converted one aquarium to natural aquarium with pond plants, pond fish (gambusia) and natural sunlight . I am happy and stopped spending money on fish and aquarium products
Father Fish yet again you’re a life saver! Since I’ve capped my tank with sand my tanks health has improved tenfold. Thanks for all your expertise and advice. My fish are now breeding! 😊 your calming voice reminds me of my dear grumpy. If you’re ever looking to adopt a new grandkid … lol I’ll be here. 😋
Your knowledge and tanks we all look up to. But I do wonder have you ever considered doing saltwater tanks also? Or will freshwater be what you wanna focus
My intent is to do salt but I am living in a tiny place without the ability to have more than a very few tanks. I am hoping this channel and my store grow to allow me to move.
I was aquascaping & thought I bought sand but it's crushed coral ment for salt water aquarium. I just noticed after having my aquarium established for 2 months. Will this live crushed coral negatively affect my freshwater 5 gal aquarium?
My guppies and Endlers seem to love eating Hornwort. They have eaten it all! I am thinking of growing Hornwort in a tank by itself, touse as a food source gor the the fish. Have you seen this behavior with hornwort as a food source, with your guppies and endlers?
Me gusta mucho estos videos lastima que los canales en español no hay nadie que te hable sobre tener un acuario al natural ❤ todo se reduce quien tiene mas dinero para gastar en el sustrato y el filtro mas caro posible
I would like to know if I could turn off my hang on filter ( full of ceramic and sponges) wich is working with 1 ( for 40 gal) sponge filter in 50 gal tank with plants, deep substrate ( dirt) and sand (2 inches), 26 livebeares. Im thinking about having an ammonia peak. What do you think teacher?
Good morning father fish. I had a young maple tree that was blown over from a wind storm last week. If i strip the leaves off and let them finish drying out, would they still be good to use in my aquariums?
Is there any odor associated with having a tank set up like this? It all makes so much sense, and I would love to do this, but I am worried about it smelling like a mucky pond. Thank you so much for sharing all of this knowledge.
Can someone suggest plants I should buy for my brand new 10 gallon aquarium? I just started it today. The water is really cloudy and I don't know which plants I should start with. I was thinking about the 59.00 package but it might be to many for this small tank. Any feedback will be helpful because I don't know what plant does what. Thanks from son of FF.
I use your method with my 55g planted tank. Unfortunately I started it before I found your channel, but I did start with sand, but no soil or compost. I did incorporate your dead leaves and creek or river water tips. Haven't had to do a water change in months. Only top off every other week or so. Tank is very healthy. If I bought the supplement package you sell, how do I get it under the 3-4 inches of sand substrate already in place.
Dear Father Fish I have a question. I have a small 5 gallon of which the largest inhabitants are shrimp, there are no fish in it but a huge variety of critters. It is completely covered in plants. Now I have the following problem. Over time my PH always seems to keep on rising until it starts to affect the life in the tank. Recently all the snails have died and I measured the PH at 9.5 in the late afternoon. My tapwater is around 8 but I mix it 50/50 with reverse osmosis water. It used to be stable at around a ph of 7.3 to 7.5. With some googling, my hypothesis is that the ph rises due to co2 depletion. Do you have any suggestions on what I can best do now to remedy the issue?
Father Fish, your discord link says its expired! When you are copying the invite link there is an option to make it permanent. Your content and information is fantastic. Thank you.
similar to aquaponics, my use of the deep substrate natural tank is virtually the opposite, requiring no ferts or injections. The use of sand is significant as it demonstrate the value of sand as a vehicle for nutrients.
So I went out to local ponds got Samoyed leaves and sticks. I put about 2 in in my aquarium and on top of that two to two-and-a-half in of white sand. The whites and now has dark gray streaks along the size of the aquarium and the mud has a weird orange color along the sides of the aquarium. Sometimes there's a weird smell. I bought three feeder fish they did well for about a month so I bought three Guppies. Two days later two Guppies and one feeder fish died I checked the ammonia it's okay don't know what's going on. I do wonder why the whites and has turned dark along the sides and why the mud has turned orange is this some kind of weird thing that is going to go away
Hello father fish, I have a 2month 5gal bowl. Put my first betta in about a month ago. I have your substrate, wood, live plants, heater and small sponge filter. Been fighting ammonia and nitrite from day one. Added 2 platties 3 days ago . Added a little food 2 days later. Been doing waterchanges almost every day . Now it's testing high only in ammonia. Should I stop doing water changes and let the tank take care of itself? I have added the resurrection stuff twice. I have leaves. Do I not harm my fish and delay the evolution of the environment ? Please give me advice on this! This is my third tank following your channel. Thank you!!!
That's harsh. I have revisited your lectures and remembered your earlier lessons. I have locked away the key to my test kit. I have fed my betta and platties. So yes, I am listening. I have listened and followed your lessons. But I am old and I forget. There is a lot to take in, apply and remember. So I forgot, so shoot me... I panicked. Didn't want to kill my first and only betta. Especially since I just added 2 platties and it worked out great. I have trouble connecting to your forums and Schuler. I just know how to ask you when I don't know, or don't remember, what to do. I truly didn't know that you don't want these inquiries. So I apologize. But now I have lost my lifeline to my mentor. Thank you for all you have taught me.
Oh dear. I so hope you found answers to your questions & that all your fishies survived. If you don't know, there are fishkeepers on You Tube who employ methods similar to FF. Just scroll sites till you find them. Try keying in "natural fish tanks" or something similar. Best wishes. 😊 @marioncarter3428
Sorry about your problem. Hope your fishies survived. There's several channels on You Tube that employ natural fish tank methods similar to FF. Just key in something like " natural fish tanks" & scroll. You'll find several. Best wishes. 😊
My tank has been flourishing without any need for cleaning since I started with your method! But now the grass has completely taken over (it’s like a jungle) and is slowly killing my other plants. Any advice?
With the dirted tank method does it mean we need to replace the layer of dirt after a few years? If all of the aquarium is covered with sand then how can fish waste and detritus reach the bottom to reinvigorate the dirt layer?
I'm just amazed at all the new things I'm learning about Gods green earth. I suspect that God is smiling down on FF. I'm surprised he didn't mention mycelium which without it every thing would die.
Hello father fish, I've been watching your videos lately and get inspired to start a new natural tank like yours. But I have two main problems: 1. I have no clue what kind of sand should I use for substrate.. I think the only available sand here is beach sand and construction sand. Are both safe to use? 2. I couldn't find a natural water ecosystem here, both stream and pool are polluted with trash. Sadly, people in my country has been treating river and lake as a massive garbage bin. Is there a way to make natural food(microorganisms) without getting them from natural body of water? Will submerging dead leaves in water suffice? Thank you in advance
Take some material from the best source you can find and start it in an outdoor bucket. some leaves and detritus are all that is needed./ Any sand will do.
Honestly, I used it for years. It’s great at first, really polished the water but it breaks down every time you clean (bleach) it. And every time you do it you get diminishing returns. Eventually you have to refill the bag and it’s expensive stuff. It’s works great but not a long term fix in my opinion.
@@mrpunchyface774 ah but i just recharged it like 4-5 times... it really help me to remove tannin, bcs i got big wood in my tank. im just afraid it will disturb "natural aquarium" style
It is a resin that absorbs organic material. It can be recharged with saline solution. I prefer to keep the organics as nutrient for bacteria, fungi, and plants.
@@FatherFish when I used it you were supposed to use a bleach solution to recharge it. It would break down the purigen over a few recharges and you’d have to buy more.
I'm going to grab a handful of decaying leaves from my local clean river on my way home from work and out them in my tank today. I added 2 inches of sand over my gravel substrate tank of 3 years. Thank god I found you father fish! Thank you!
@@BarityOne as of today it is thriving. before i had to gravel vac once a week im never gravel vacuuming again. got the sand substrate over the gravel and its going great! so i always had plants in my tank believe it or not i had them in small pots of gravel on top of the gravel substrate now i have them all planted directly into my new substrate. its wonderful. i just couldnt mentally break the chains of the way i always done the hobby since like the age of 12 until i binge watched father fish videos during work. the way he broke down how nature at the end of the day is the best really put things into perspective for me of things i always knew to be true but couldnt implement. sorry for the rant but yes the 2 inches of black sand ontop of my old layer of 1 inch of black gravel in a planted tank looks beautiful. my betta and his tank mates are in heaven. i recently added leaves from a local river bed into my tank 2 days ago or so as well.
@@smileyone7589 yes, make sure the sand is rinsed off and then put it in a plastic bottle. Then you can pour it on the bottom without getting it everywhere.
Father Fish, you remind me of my grandfather who was one of the best people I ever knew. Tomorrow will be two weeks ago that I lost him. I'm glad that you are still around and making videos. I wish you to stay healthy and keep up the great work.
Tore down my 3 year old 75 gallon Walstad theme tank today. Repurposed it with the father fish method complete with supplement package and 3 inches of sand. With way less feeding and no addition of fertilizers I look forward to watching the transformation unfold. Thanks Father Fish for all your knowledge. 😀
It certainly does 13 th will be two months in. I am on discord now. My handle is h20insanity. I have both a video and a pic of my tank there. Everything is filling in and the trimming is taking place on a regular basis. Especially the limnophila sessiflora. Nice chatting. Glad to hear you’re ok😉
Thank you. I have been thinking about co2. It wasn’t something I was going to run out and buy. However, I have been looking into some home made ones. I won’t be looking into it any further.
I've taken my co2 system off. No plants have suffered. I now believe you only need co2 if you want your plants to grow fast but then you're trimming all the time so whats the point.
@@matthewburley880 thank you. You’re right I don’t want to be trimming all the time. Plus I hate cutting healthy plants and throwing them away. I have no choice with hornwort but even duck weed I give to my boyfriend his cichlids love to eat it.
Thank you for explaining this. I could never explain why my plants has always done good and I don't use co2 nor use fertiliser in my aquarium but I do have a deep substrate and I do have a lot of fish but I have never had to do any water change . I only top it off once a week and my water has never had any smell. I do have a lot of plants per aquarium and all seems to be happy Now I understand why. Thank you sir for explaining it to us. You are awesome
I had a 125 long fully planted co2 injected jungle with angles rams and a bunch of smaller fish. Broke it down when I moved and never set up another one because it was too much work. Kept the 55 gallon sump just in case I got the itch again. That was 3 years ago but I’m dusting it off and buying the father fish substrate supplements and the dead leaf starter thing. Thank you for restoring my interest again!
Thanks father fish for all the correct knowledge you share I'm changing my substrate this week from gravel to sand as I was tricked into thinking gravel was the best substrate I'm now a true believer of what you do and just wish I knew all about this before I did my first anitial setup
FatherFish I hope you do not mind me giving you the label of GrandfatherFish, you have much wisdom with much care and love for nature. I thank you sir for this.
Please redo the video on the step by step products that you use in your dirt foundation. It was very windy and some of your video was not clear. Thank you.
Dear Father Fish, I like it very much your nature setup system however if we need to frequent uprooting and pruning the plant does this system still suitable? my main concern is when we uprooting the plant the soil underneath will came up and creating a mess.
Does the no liquid fertilizer work without the dirt layer? Example I have 3 inches of sand with anubias as my primary plant. Will they grow without liquid fert in the water column?
Great video!❤ Curious to know if you’ve watched the movie Fantastic Fungi? Would love to hear your thoughts on it if you decide to check it out. Cheers!✌️
Wow father fish thank you for explain this c02 topic for plants injection of cO2 is dangerous for fish i should know i kill my discus some months ago not understand c02 bravo father fish 🎉❤
Hey I’m planning on rebuilding my 29 gallon planted tank it currently has eco complete substrate. All my stem plants are deteriorating from the bottom up. I was thinking about adding an inch of organic potting mix and capping it with the eco complete and then cap that with black blasting sand, do you think that’ll be fine for guppies? The tank also has a large piece of driftwood
@@FatherFish okay thank you so much. Also will a HOB filter be necessary if I have a sponge filter that’s rated for 40 gallon? I’m worried about dead spots in the tank but the flow from a HOB is too much for my floating plants
Father Fish are you aware of any dwarf cichlids that can do well in hard water? All the Apisto's I've been researching say they need soft water. Even on the websites where I can buy them they are saying this. I don't really care for Tanganyikan dwarfs to be honest.
@@KrZYMaN thank you for the suggestion. I've got two dwarf flag Acaras doing great with a bunch of green neon tetras and also some celestial pearl danios.
Hello @Fatherfish What if I want to lower my pH? I keep (German) Discus and I have extremely high pH 7,5-8 (hardwater). With CO2 I lower the pH to 6.8 and the plants seem to like that and the Discus lay eggs at about 6.8 pH as well. I only know how to lower it with CO2 (and keep it steady because of a pH sensor that supplies more or less CO2) As soon as the CO2 supply stops, it slowly goes back to about 7.5 and swordplants / hydrocotyle / vallisneria dont seem the like it as much as near neutral pH. The tank is more than 1 year old with about 1.5-2 inches of natural mulch plant fertilizer, capped off with about 2 inches of white inert sand
@@CrystalmarieGrz I tried the natural method already by adding a whole log of dead mangrove wood and dried catappa leaves. The water still goes up to 7.5pH without supplying CO2 It's good advice, but I already use it
@@EuroGupper I honestly don’t know. If you found a way that works best thing would be stick with it. You tried everything I would do. You must just have really hard water. My water is very soft I added some kind of rocks that raise it and keep it stable. I’ve heard of using reverse osmosis water but then you’ll have to spend money on the system plus find a way to store a whole lot of water.
@@CrystalmarieGrz You must be psychic 😳. I am installing a softwater filter installation connected to my main waterline next month. It has a bypass to also get hardwater if i need it. No tank needed for storage. It instantly supplies softwater with negligible less water pressure
Its correct name is "Brownian Motion" and is caused by the molecules vibration (due to temperature) between water and various molecular sized particles.
Father Fish, is it possible to grow hi-tech plants in a deep substrate aquarium without using CO2 injection? Since a deep substrate is already capable of generating an enormous amount of carbon dioxide
NO. this technique is only good for low tech plants. High tech plants like Rotala macrandra, syngonanthus, ludwigia sp white, etc etc would die off. Also, the morphology of the plants is different when you are injecting CO2. If you want that robust growth with little algae CO2 is absolutely necessary. If it wasn't, green aqua wouldn't use it.
The aquatic plants also utilize Co2 from their leafs which is something he didn't mention in the video. Yes a lot comes from their roots but if you are diffusing Co2 in the water column then they can utilize it from their leafs also. Generally the growth of Co2 injected plants is much faster and robust but more suited to a high light system.
