Great video! Thanks so much :) I currently live in Spain (thinking of moving to Italy) and I could have made exactly the same video. I had the same experience of having to learn the difference between an acquaintance and a friend, and after 6 years in Spain I really don't have any close friends. I had some deep connections with expats/long-stay travelers but they often eventually move away. My personality has also changed since living here, 'slipped away' as you said. Spanish people in general are not interested in friendships or dating non-Spaniards, I've lived in many countries and never experienced such disinterest due to being a foreigner. I speak Spanish but I have an accent, and as far as Spaniards are concerned, if you have an accent you don't really speak Spanish, and they will often reply in broken English, even though I am fluent. My own adult students told me that in their families most people look down on "anglo" people as being lesser. I can often see this when I am in a store, how I am treated. As I come from a culture where smiling, being polite and greetings are the basics of communication, this has been another daily struggle that is hard to get used to. But over time you find the few places where people are happy to see you and don't mind smiling or saying hello, haha. Being in a foreign speaking country for so long, I agree, it changes you as you don't get to communicate freely and easily on a daily basis, and it affects you in the long term more than you realize. The whole friend group thing, this seems to happen all over the world though. I grew up in and lived in many different countries and I found it to be like this in Australia and Spain for example, however when I lived in the US and Latin America, not so much, even France was good for making friends. Just subscribed, thanks again! ...might have some questions for you sometime, as I am thinking about making the move.
