In the new public aquarium hall, Korallhavet, the largest tank, will house hundreds of endangered tropical corals. Museum marine biologists conduct experiments on optimal living conditions for these delicate corals using light and salinity.
Björn Källström, a researcher at the aquarium, explains that although the corals start small, they will grow within a year or so, allowing visitors to witness their development over time. Among the roughly hundred species on display, the Montipora coral stands out.
The Maritime Museum and Aquarium's coral aquarium is unique for its live coral display, a rarity in public aquariums. With coral reefs facing endangerment, efforts to preserve them are crucial. Källström emphasizes the urgency, citing a UN IPCC report that suggests only one percent of the earth's coral reefs may survive if global warming exceeds two degrees.
"We can't halt the climate crisis by cultivating corals, but we can safeguard them for the future," says Källström. The aquarium is actively building a gene bank and breeding corals to ensure their survival, alongside ongoing cultivation efforts in a new molecular laboratory.
The Maritime Museum and Aquarium is part of the City of Gothenburg’s Culture Management. Co-financed by Region Västra Götaland.
