Extremadura is one of the least visited and least populated regions in all of Spain. It’s a wonderful part of the country to visit, and it’s only a couple of hours' drive from Madrid.
And there is one part of the region that is especially famous - particularly for two weeks a year in spring. And that’s the Jerte Valley (Valle del Jerte in Spanish). It’s a magical little valley where for two weeks a year the region’s cherry blossoms come into bloom. And the entire valley is blanketed in gorgeous white cherry blossoms.
You can walk amongst them, even picnic beneath them. In fact, many of the cherry orchards that line the hillside leave their gates open so you can explore freely. So that’s what we did!
If you ever want to visit this region, here are the things I would recommend:
- The cherry blossoms flower around late March and early April. The dates change a little each yet, depending on the weather - so it’s a little hard to predict if you’re planning a trip (and places do book out). But if you check out this page (in Spanish) www.turismovalledeljerte.com/c... They flower for approximately 2 weeks, so you’ve generally got 2 weekends in there during which you can visit. If you can visit during the week, there will be fewer people
- I suggest staying at Cabezuela del Valle. It’s a nice little town and has some good options for eating and drink. It’s also very central within the valley. Try the little riverside restaurant called El Vao. Also, for a big slap up Spanish meal, check out El Castillo (a brief drive from Cabezuela del Valle)
- Make sure you rent a car - you need a card to move around the area
- Take a picnic to have a picnic beneath the cherry trees! The spot where we picnicked was a brief walk out of a town called Valdastillas. Simply keep walking until you find a cherry orchard on the side of the road that looks nice and hard in - people don’t seem to mind people exploring their orchards.
- The waterfall we visited is called Cascada del Caozo - and it’s a brief drive up the hill from Valdastillas - and it’s worth it!
And that article about Spanish coffee: www.madridchow.com/the-curious...

Pyralis, you are ver right!!! La Rioja is a wonderful and amazing place where you can go whenever you want. Winter, spring or summer. Even in autumn, the best season for me, its landscapes have an incredible mix of beautiful colors from yellow to red. You'll love this land as I do.

Spain has so much variety that it is difficult to choose the most beautiful or interesting place. We live on the border with Galicia so it is easier to get up to that region. Certainly the Rias Altas from Ferrol to Ribadeo would have to make the list. Spectacular cliffs, fishing villages, and lighthouses make it a great trip. The coast between la Coruña and Cabo Finesterre is also beautiful with the fishing villages of Laxe, Camariñas, and Muxia. Then of course you have a place I keep coming back to--Extremadura. It is almost half the size of Portugal and has mountains (Sierra de Gata), plains, fertile river valleys (Don Benito, Badajoz, Coria), massive reservoirs, two great rivers (the Guadiana and the Tajo), and so many historical cities that you would spend a lifetime visiting them all. Plasencia, Cáceres, Mérida, Trujillo, Hervás, Coria, the list goes on and on.

Extremadura is most definitely the hidden gem of Spain. I had the pleasure of living in Mérida for a few years and I'm still in love with the region. One of the most genuine places in the Peninsula and also one of the least visited, which baffles me, because it's packed with historical landmarks from several different eras.

My many favourite places in Spain. The Bizkaia bridge in the port of Bilbao. Covadonga and in scenery of Asturias. The Roman ruins of Mérida. The patios and the Mezquita of Cordoba. The cathedral and the Feria de Abril in Seville. The town of Ronda with the famous new bridge. The village of Setenil de las Bodegas Andalucía. The Alhambra of Granada. The festival of Las Fallas in Valencia. The Roman ruins of Tarragona. Everything in Barcelona. The mountain of Monserrat and the monastery of San Miquel del Fai Cataluña. The tapas bar of Calle de laurel and the bodega of Campo Viejo in Logroño La Rioja.

I love this part of Spain. My Spanish wife and I drove through the valley last summer, coming from El Burgo de Osma past El Barco de Avila and on to Trujillo via the EX-208 road through the Monfrague National Park (which is an incredible place for bird watching). We stopped off in Cabezuela del Valle to buy a box of delicious large cherries which were being packed for export. The countryside in Extramadura is fantastic with hardly any traffic outside the main cities and some real hidden gems to visit. Extramadura also has it's own collection of reclaimed epic Hotels which are called Hospederias De Extramadura which are a fine alternative to the Paradores. Big thumbs up to the humble tomato and (Spanish) onion salad which is very refreshing in hot temperatures (Italy does an equally brilliant fennel and orange salad). Excellent video. WT

On your next trip you should go northwest from Plasencia to the abandoned village of Grenadilla on the shores of the Gabriel y Galán reservoir. Spectacular. Then head northwest to the Las Hurdes region just south of La Alberca, then head south to Sierra de Gata with the famous villages of Gata, Santibañez el Alto, Robledillo de Gata, and San Martín de Trevejo. The larger town of Coria on the plains of the Alagón River is also worth a day.

Thanks Ray, that looks like a very tempting proposition. I very often check out lakes and reservoirs when travelling in Spain. There's nearly always some interesting stuff going on and the more remote the better of course. I'm compelled to mention the fantastic countryside of Castile. There's a lot of great stuff well off the tourist trail. Cheers. WT

I’ve stayed at the parador in Cagas de Onis (Asturias). It was an old monastery and absolutely beautiful. Warm and modern rooms, with great views of the mountains. The breakfast was a little pricey but delicious. Fresh fruit, meats, cheeses, jams, juice and coffee. It was worth the splurge from our regular toast and coffee. Possibly the most beautiful parador I have seen! It was expensive but completely worth the splurge!

An entertaining video. We were just there last week, but not exactly where you were. We did the Jerte thing two years ago crossing from Jaraiz de la Verta to Valdastillas on the Garganta la Olla road. Scary and loney as we never met another car. On this trip we visited the Monastery of Yuste in Coacos de Yuste, where Carlos V spent his last days, plus the German cemetery close by. Actually where you were, it is not the Jerte but la Vera. The Jerte region is on the north side of the Gredos mountains while Vera is on the south side. But, of course there are cherry trees galore there too. The Parador you visited is in Jarandilla de la Vera. I know you know that but your viewers probably don't. Having said that, my favorite place in Extremadura, which is also my favorite region of Spain, is the Sierra de Gata. Coria is a great place to use as a base to visit the villages of the Sierra and also las Hurdes, once the most isolated region of Spain. The government of Extremadura has 8 hotels, called hospederías, in the most emblematic locations of the region. all of them inside restored convents, monasteries, or palaces. They are four star hotels and are cheaper than the paradores, with special prices if you pay with no cancellation. We've been now to the one in las Hurdes, San Martín de Trevejo, Alcántara, Hervás, and Garovillas de Alconétar. There is also one in the Jerte valley, Hospederia Valle del Jerte. I don't get a commission but the prices are right, the food is good, and they are in historical buildings. As a last point, I must say that your companion Joly is a good addition to your team. Attractive, intelligent, and good English. You're a lucky man.

Thank a lot of for your video about The Jerte Valley. It will help us to show what amazing is our region. I hope you will come back in other season, for instance, when the cherries are riped. They are delicious and they are all around. Besides, in summer time, you will could enjoy a refreshing bath in one of the best natural swimming pools of Spain, Los Pilones in the Nature Reserve Garganta de los Infiernos. Or why not, in autumn, it is the best season for the people who live here: the mixture of colours, the calm, it would be a real magical moment to share with your followers.

We have stayed in at least a dozen Paradors across España. We have stayed many times in the Plasencia Parador and the hotel and staff are fantastic with a special shoutout to Manuel, Mario and Jose Maria. We now have a flat in Plasencia and spend 6 months each there. It is truly a spectacular place

James and Yoly- thank you again and again for your wonderful channel! I have a few suggestions for future videos if you will indulge me ...…. 1. Do you have friends in other parts of Spain (Valencia, just sayin) that could take you both around and you could explain the regional differences in culture and food 2. Also, to represent the warmth of the Spanish people...…..maybe do so real time "encounters" ( as tourists, as a person learning the Language, etc) I'm sure you'll make it interesting! Kindest regards!

We have stayed at four Paradores--Santo Domingo de la Calzada, El Saler, Cuenca, and Toledo. When you go to Toledo and Cuenca, request a room with a view. Santo Domingo de la Calazada is the perfect place to explore the wine regions. Because you live in Spain, you can take advantage of the ofertas that they have from time to time--check their website!

Nice video! Extremadura trully has a lot to offer, it is one of my favourite regions. Paradores are really great, especially those that are historical sites, like castles and monasteries. It is so unusual to have the opportunity to enjoy these sites as the kings and queens of old did that I don't mind paying a bit more. If you go enjoy the breakfasts they are trully epic.

Love the Paradores!!! We stayed at the One in Rhonda & also in Nerja - the one in Rhonda was amazing - exactly what you would expect. classic historic... the one in Nerja was more modern, might have been a chain hotel in the 60's :)

Hola James y Yoli! First, I am enjoying your series. I especially enjoy that you are getting out there, beyond Madrid and Barcelona, as cool as those cities are, but also seeing the off the track towns and small places. As far as paradors go, I took my daughter to Spain some years ago when she was about 10 and as a special treat, we stayed at el Parador de Siguenza, the fortress that became a bishop's palace. It is built, I mean built to last out of thick stone. Since we couldn't afford to stay and eat there, we walked through the snow, yeah it snows in Spain, down from the hill the fortress-palace to the active town below and found a super cool local place to eat. If you're going to try a Parador, give Siguenza a try.

The perfect summary for Spanish holidays: "We feel disgustingly full but very happy". We're going to Spain the next week, and I must confess I'm scared. Great video, by the way, you're great!
