Hi from Sweden! Actually there were Vikings in what today is Finland if the Åland Islands counts, however these are Swedish-speaking islands with an autonomous government but under Finnish sovereignty, for all intents and purposes they are historically and culturally part of Sweden, but legally part of Finland today. They are the islands you see on the map between Stockholm and Helsinki!

Hi back from the UK! Thanks for your comment, that’s actually really interesting to know! I have heard of the Åland Islands but never knew they were occupied by vikings or knew that they were Swedish speaking. Interesting that they are legally part of Finland today, I suppose that is similar to territories like Gibraltar which are actually legally part of the UK. Hope you enjoyed the vlog! 😄

@@Sheppey10 Indeed, Swedish is the sole official language in the Åland Islands and they don't even learn Finnish in school, when mainland Finns visit they have to speak either English or Swedish to be understood! The status is similar to that of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, they govern themselves mostly. Yes, like all Swedish lands also the Åland Islands was occupied by Vikings, they are part of Finland today because of the Russian invasion of Sweden in 1809 when Russia annexed Finland (which also was part of Sweden) and the Åland Islands and the islands became part of Russian-occupied Finland, so when Finland declared independence in 1917 that included the Åland Islands as part of it's territory, much against the wishes of the locals and Sweden who wanted the islands to be returned to Sweden, at the time. I enjoyed the vlog!

The people of Scandinavia in the high middle ages had no qualms about referring to any nationality or ethinicity as vikings, it just means being a sea raider. They used the word about Scotsmen, Irishmen, Finns, Estonians or whatever. If you travelled in a boat and robbed people you were a viking regardless of where you were from and what language you spoke.

@vaultkeeper2 That's crazy that they don't even get taught Finnish and that the Finnish are not understood! So interesting though that they govern themselves. I find all the Viking stuff so interesting so loved being over in all the Nordics to understand it a bit more. Yeah I can see how there would be some friction there with Sweden being the original owners of the island. But can also see why Finland would want to keep it. Thanks again for the interesting comment, sorry it took so long to reply. I have been away on holiday and wanted to make sure I had some time to read it and respond 👍

@danvernier198 Yeah I remember hearing about that in the Viking Museum where they explained that Vikings literally meant sea raider and that it could be anyone who came from anywhere. Mad to think that people were that afraid of them that it made such an impact on history today and we all still learn about them. Fascinating stuff the Vikings. Thanks for the comment!
