In Peniche, there is the Peniche Fortress, the National Resistance and Freedom Museum. This museum was born from the recognition of the Peniche Fortress as a memory space and greatest symbol of the fight for freedom. Multidisciplinary in scope, the National Resistance and Freedom Museum's mission is to preserve the historical memory of the Peniche Fortress and the Struggle of the Portuguese People, in particular, the Resistance to Dictatorship, for Freedom and Democracy.
The fortress is located on the southern slope of the Peniche Peninsula, on the cliffs, between the fishing port, to the east, and the Gruta da Furninha to the west, currently, the fortress houses the Museum of Resistance and Freedom, which is part of of the Portuguese Museum Network.
Since April 27, 1974, the date of the release of political prisoners, the Peniche Fortress has established itself as a symbol of resistance and the fight for freedom. For this reason, it was decided to preserve the integrity of this historic, military and prison building through a museumization project.
