In this video Shem Caulfield shares his knowledge of wrought iron gates and explains why they are an important part of our Heritage.
Having photographed and documented many wrought iron gates around Ireland, Shem is currently involved in a community project to document wrought iron gates in County Westmeath.
Recently, Aidan Leavy uncovered several wrought iron gates on his property and, having heard about the project, he contacted the Heritage Officer and invited Shem to come and see the gates.
John Nangle is listed in Slaters Directory as a blacksmith in Castlepollard in 1846. He may have been the Blacksmith who made the gate featured in this video.
This is the first in a series of short videos on wrought iron gates - in videos 2 and 3 Shem Caulfield goes through practical steps in maintaining and conserving wrought iron gates.
The Westmeath Wrought Iron Gates Project is an action of the Westmeath Heritage Plan and is funded by The Heritage Council with support from Westmeath Council.
This video was filmed by Mark Bennett from crosscut.ie with support from the Creative Ireland Programme, Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, the Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
