This summer me and the better half spent just short of three weeks and 3000 miles traveling round the Western Alps in our 2008 Landrover Discovery 3. Once there the plan was to take in as many high passes as possible and ideally spend as little time on tarmac as we could.
Thankfully there is no shortage of military roads in this area and with a little research we were able to put together a wish list of gravel routes.
In this instalment we travel down through France, into Monaco then Italy, before starting heading north in the Ligurian Alps.
I don't have a route I can share, the best thing to do is search online for possible routes. I've popped the name of the area or track on the screen where possible.
Enjoy!
Matt.

Any chimp with a camera can get good footage out there. The weather and scenery do all the work for you! I started by watching a ton of videos like this and making a list. Then have a google and you realise there's lots of info out there. I used 'Outdoor Active' for mapping, lots of public routes saved on there.

Hi Great video thanks for sharing. Do you think most of this could be done in a VW Crafter conversion? 4motion, lifted with a diff lock. Id love to get out there but not sure if my van is too high for the tunnels or wide for the tracks. 6m long 3m high. Thank you very much for any info you can give. Cheers Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for the feedback! Some of the loose bits on steep ground might cause issues, but I'd say a 4x4 Crafter would handle the traction and clearance side ok. However you would likely have issues with the size. It might fit through the tunnels, but some of the tracks have trees or rock faces hanging over and that's assuming you don't meet anyone coming the other way! There were quite a few times where I'd have the disco smeared up against a wall or with the wheels inches away from a drop trying to pass something. I certainly wouldn't want to deal with that in my own 6m (2.5m wide) transit. Having said that I think we did see some Sprinters on a track so you'd have to pick which ones you drove carefully. It's been that long now I couldn't advise which would be best sorry!
