This episode of the ABC TV show Discovery dates to 1968, and explores educational and cultural exchange activities at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The episode is hosted by Bill Owen with Virginia Gibson. The East-West Center (EWC), or the Center for Cultural and Technical Interchange Between East and West, is an education and research organization established by the U.S. Congress in 1960 to strengthen relations and understanding among the peoples and nations of Asia, the Pacific, and the United States. It was dedicated by then Vice President Lyndon Johnson in 1961.
The episode opens with college-aged men from different countries tossing a football (0:07). At 0:33, a female Thai student performs a traditional dance outdoors on grass for American students. At 0:43, we view campus from the road. “East Meets West.” Opening credits for Discovery 1968 (0:53-1:18). Waterfall aerial shot, zooming in. At 1:24, fly over bungalows on a tropical beach. At 1:30, the city of Honolulu (aerial). At 1:40, aerial view of Hawaii coastline. Close-up volcanic activity / magma flow (1:47-2:10). Waves lap a rocky shore (creation of new land). A map of Hawaii appears, names of islands pop up starting from north, then zoom on “Oahu” (2:31-2:54). Aerial view of Honolulu. Views of Waikiki beach, Diamond Key, sailboats. At 3:29, aerial view of University of Hawaii main campus (Manoa Valley), with Thomas Jefferson admin building, Lincoln Library, and John F. Kennedy Theater (3:56-4:06). Then, continuous shot of Japanese garden (4:06-4:19). Female students hang out outside in Thai pavilion (4:20). Male students from different countries chat on campus (4:39-5:00). At 5:00, a Black American ex-marine student works with tutor, studying Japanese by oral vocabulary repetition. At 5:48, a Thai student learns to operate heavy construction machinery. At 6:17, girls from Samoa and New Guinea work in a kitchen (hospitality / tourism) with a white man wearing a tall chef hat. At 6:36, in a corn field, an Okinawan man studies individual crops and takes field notes. At 7:18, in a manicured yard, two Japanese women practice violin at a table with Honolulu Symphony Orchestra conductor. Narrator notes “valuable interchange of community leaders and master teachers;” students “profit from contact with other cultures.” At 8:15, a boat in a bay (“a university vessel…the Salpa”). An Indian woman studies plankton on the boat. She lowers net into water with some assistance from a male Thai student. The boat docks and students retrieve nets / students discuss. Male student swims with big goggles, holding sea cucumber. At 10:01, pan across an airfield (Honolulu International Airport). Six Samoan students from Pago-Pago take meteorological measurements on roof. At 10:51, we see a map and zoom in on Samoan islands (labeled), and a pencil circles Western Samoa vs. American Samoa. At 11:35, meteorology student prepares pilot balloon and releases balloon for tracking (weather station). Students in office receive machine printed meteorological measurements (early computers) (11:58). Zoom in on various meteorological machine instruments. A woman types at typewriter. At 12:58, Asian students laugh and chat in institute lobby. A woman checking out books from the library (13:11). At 13:15, two white and Asian women speak. At 13:30, we see backyard deck of a white American family home hosting Indian student (student exchange). The family makes lei flower garlands and plays ukulele outside. At 14:02, Thai woman dances with traditional music for diverse audience. Students on lawn chairs watch performance. At 14:35, Thai woman is shown teaching Thai language to students outdoors, using fruits (foreign language lesson). At 15:53, Americans and Okinawans at university experimental farm. Interpreter helps students and researchers discuss fruit trees; man holding halved guava to demonstrate. Okinawan students nod. At 17:03, two shirtless Asian men study outside next to a bay. One student from Sichem (North India / Himalaya). At 17:38, Asian and Caucasian, American students sit on campus lawn. One student sings operatically while others listen. At 18:37, diverse students from New Jersey, Pakistan, Australia, the Philippines, India, and North Carolina debate U.S. foreign aid in a seminar classroom. The program’s two hosts make concluding remarks. They emphasize traditional clothing and diverse countries of origin / diverse nationalities of students, zooming in on various faces. A United Airlines jet plane takes off.
