Discrete trial instruction is a useful method for teaching important skills to children with autism. Many children with autism do not acquire important language and cognitive skills from everyday life experiences in the same way that typical children do.
Discrete trial instruction methodology is designed to compensate for this difficulty in children with autism. Within discrete trial instruction sessions, a teacher will sit at a desk or table across from a child and present instructional demands to teach new skills. The teacher will provide prompts to support the child’s correct responses and will provide social reinforcement for correct responding. If a child errors then an error correction procedure will be implemented to provide immediate feedback and guidance to the correct response.
During discrete trial instruction children with autism frequently exhibit high rates of problem behavior in the form of escape and avoidance of the tasks being presented. Unfortunately, many children with autism have been accidentally taught this behavior - the instructional methods have been unwittingly arranged so that these behaviors are encouraged. To overcome problem behavior we have developed teaching methods that instead encourage children to cooperate during discrete trial instruction sessions.
These teaching methods have been detailed in research papers that we have authored in scientific journals. In 2010 Dr. Carbone and his colleagues published a review paper that provided an analysis of problem behavior during discrete trial instruction and the instructional methods that have been demonstrated to overcome this challenge. Provided below is a partial list of the instructional methods that are effective in teaching cooperation to children with autism during discrete trial instruction:
• Pace of instruction: There is a fast pace of instruction, which contrary to stressing the child, reduces problem behavior. This is demonstrated in a research paper by Carole A. Roxburgh and Vincent Carbone published in 2012 titled “The Effect of Varying Teacher Presentation Rates on Responding During Discrete Trial Training for Two Children With Autism”. This research paper can be accessed at this link:

• Interspersal training: the combination of already mastered skills (easy together with new target skills (hard). This methodology reduces problem behavior.
• Mixing and varying: the combination of different kind of skills (motor imitation, listener response, labeling, etc). This variation also leads to less problem behavior.
• Errorless teaching: The instructor prompts the child when teaching new skills, ensuring correct responses. Reducing child errors makes problem behavior less frequent.
The Carbone Clinic in Dubai treats children with autism. Our treatment follows the methodology developed by Dr. Vincent Carbone in his New York clinic based upon B.F. Skinner's Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Treatment is supervised by certified senior staff to provide superior ABA services.
