Discuses have no particular environment other than the tank itself. Where they are located is adaptable to your situation. Discus can adapt to almost any environment as long as that environment has consistent elements of traffic, noise and your interaction with your fish. Maintenance, Water changes and feeding are all import activities that build trust. If you are netting your fish and scaring them more than necessary, each time you approach the tank your fish will be suspect about why. If you make the experience a good one you build trust. Plan long term for your fish so that they can continue throughout their life cycle to experience the same environment and not disrupt their life experiences and patterns. This is True with all Tropical fish but some more than others. Discus fish are in that category where great care in planning a safe and stable environment yields the best results. They are not that fragile, they just need your trust. Good Luck!

I 1000% agree. I don’t do any of this crazy stuff as far as tank care with water changes with my discus. Just drop the water and stick the hose in. Never had issues. They even breed! These fish aren’t as sensitive as they used to be

I agree with some of this... I think you may be misinformed about the plecos (I've only seen that behavior in extremely overcrowded tanks where the discus are already stressed, but mostly you really didn't address the elephant in the room about discus. You mentioned quarantine is important but not why. Many think of discus as a weak fish but that's not really true they just have a slime coat that works extremely well at absorbing nutrients from the water but it also does a really good job of taking in anything else that may be in the tank. In other words if you mix discus with anything that's not completely disease or parasite free they will very likely get sick. And that is the number 1 issue with new discus keepers cross contamination. I always tell new discus keepers that your best bet is to get all your discus at once from a single source. Also all of my discus tanks and breeding tanks are at 82 degrees ph 7.2-7.8, kh 5-6 (kh ime is much more important than ph because a stable kh is basically stable pH and it measures calcium carbonate which is essential to stopping hith disease the 2nd most common issue with discus)

The challenge is mostly ph. It's just so much easier to stick to fish in your tapwater ph range to avoid additional work. Clean tank water require a lot of water changes at least once a week 25-50%, even 75% sometimes, and if you have to paid for water, that water bill stack very quickly, so paying $50-$350 just for water changes, will stop a lot of people who don't have free water.
@scotiacrumpler2824
@scotiacrumpler2824 2 года назад
I have found that when I stopped feeding foods that break down quickly (pellets, flakes, beef heart) that it is much easier to keep water pristine with less water change. My feeding is frozen bloodworms and frozen mysis shrimp - rinse the shrimp through a net to get the cloudy bits out before feeding. I used to do 50% weekly water change, now I do 20% change with a quick vacuum each week.
@luster5497
@luster5497 2 года назад
@@scotiacrumpler2824 I want to achieve the "no-water-change" system but I think extremely healthy plants with CO2 is a must though, so trading water bills for CO2bills, idk about that commentment
@Nomadistar
@Nomadistar Год назад
@@luster5497 If that is truly your goal, you will have to think outside the box when it comes to filtration. Dr. Novak has the system I will be using, once I get my tank setup. Look into Plenum and Anoxic filtration to find his channel here on YT.
@luster5497
@luster5497 Год назад
@@Nomadistar Anoxic zone and "slow water" passing through the bottom/false bottom gravel for a "natural-filtration" with little to no water change required at all, is really great. -but, you do need a fully established planted tank with CO2 is a must to get maximum filtration. -otherwise algae will out compete the plants, and that's a whole new problem to be balanced. -honestly if I am keeping show grade discus at $250 per fish, then yes, I would not mind investing in a low-maintenance "high cost" set-up, because then it is justified to go all out. -ignore my rambling thoughts though, So what are you setting up for???
@Nomadistar
@Nomadistar Год назад
@@luster5497 Thanks for your comment! Enjoyed reading & I am going to have Discus in my 200 gal w/50 gal sump. I agree. I plan on having plants & will probably get CO2 for them as well. I want them to pearl & have max photosynthesizing. I wanted to have Guppies with them, but it seems the high temp is not gonna work. (Guess I will have to get another tank for them). As for the algae, I don't mind if I have some green algae, plan on having some shrimpys as well. I have been out of the hobby for about 25 yrs or so & am just getting back into it. So much has changed & I have been trying to absorb it all for about 2 yrs or so now.

Hi Richard i know its not directly connected to the lovely Tank you have shown . But I’ve ordered some Almond leaves for my Aquarium is it ok to use them in a tank with cherry barbs and Danios . My ph was high but then I realised i was over oxygenating the water with the filter pump on too high and that was causing it . so lowered the water flow speed and the oxygen in the water lowered and then the ph levelled to 7.4 high. Which im happy with now , but Im worried that if i add the leaves it may lower the ph too much. I hear there good for lowering ph and over all fish health but I’m concerned the leaves may over tip the balance . And also what is the right amount of Almond leaves to add per Aquarium size ? i have a 250 uk litre tank . so just wanted to run it by you as you are a Genius. love your vids. I looked for an Almond leaf vid in your vids but couldn’t see one . I learn so much from you and you passion for what you do is amazing . Hope its ok to ask a Question. Great Discus discussion. However I believe you have your choice of foods backwards. Brine shrimp are fine. Blackworms even better. But beef heart should be the food of choice. Especially for growing out the fry. Raising the fry, once taken from their parents, requires multiple feedings a day, as in every two hours. Hence the necessary daily water changes. Frozen blood worms should be avoided, in my opinion. Unless you plan on treating for Hexamita, monthly. They love blood worms, but there are much better protein rich foods for them, including flakes and pellets.

Some of the people I know who keep them regularly don't like the beef heart as much because of the mess. :-)
@annalee7403
@annalee7403 3 года назад
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I agree. It can be messy. But that should never be an excuse when it comes to the well being of one's pets. I know people who regularly keep goldfish in bowls. That doesn't make it right or good for their animals. I should say also that I make my own beef heart mixture from a recipe I got from Jack Wattely Discus. My mix contains, beef heart, wild salmon, peas, spinach, shrimp, garlic, multi vitamins and krill meal. I use enough krill meal to create a mostly dry paste that I place in freezer bags, flatten into a sheet with a roller and freeze. The result - a food less messy than some, and a little messier than others. I also do frequent, automated water changes.

Do you personally keep discus? I know you just did a multi-part tour of your entire fish room but my memory suc... it's really bad. Because of those preconceived opinions based on what others have said, I have never tried them myself. I've always gone with the poor man's version; Severums.

I haven't had them in a number of years. Back when I did it seemed like people didn't pay nearly as close attention to water parameters as they do now. Haha

@@PrimeTimeAquatics That can be said about a great many things, my friend. The internet, when used correctly, is a wonderful thing. You should (providing you have any space left) go get a 150g and try your hand at them again. I'd love to see what an expert can do with them. I mean, a 9 inch discus... Who doesn't want to see that? 😁

@@PrimeTimeAquatics do you have an RODI system? How many gallons per day is good enough? And is a 5 stage system required?

My PH is 7.5 naturally and consistently, might be a problem for me 😑
@MELODYMUNRO
@MELODYMUNRO Год назад
I would advise people NOT to play with their pH. My discus are kept in tap water with a pH of 7.4, and it is hard enough that my mbuna have thrived for years. I also currently have two pairs of discus with fry, so yes they will breed in harder water too. I don't chase perfect water, I just keep it same every water change.

Wouldn't a 50% water change daily be bad for your tank? Also im gonna have to get some for my silver dollar tank!!! Edit: slow eaters... Silver dollars aint gonna work... Perhaps synodontis cats for tank mates

Large water changes aren't ideal, but sometimes necessary depending on the fish. A drip system would be much better.

Remember,this is a public aquarium and they probably replace that tanks volume of water every other day with tap that's been treated...along with high pressure sand filters. In home tanks,you want to keep it very clean..no nutrient build up (sands will do that faster than gravels) and...look at even the public aquariums...no other large sized fish with Discus. Actually,why chance infecting them with fish of a few dollars? I've kept them,bred them..and its a killer when healthy breeders get white feces,and the fish turn purple..ugh. Hurts.
