My wife and I are our only employees for our business. Sure, sometimes we get a neighbor kid to mow or something, but we handle all the sawmill and woodworking. That means the time we spend doing our tasks must be very efficient.
Historically I've been hand loading and unloading the kiln. This tends to happen with odd size boards and slabs, and it does maximize efficiency and space use. But it also wastes a ton of time. One a full load in the kiln, hand unloading means sorting boards into bundles as they come out, and finding ways to strap and store it all. Hand loading in means a lot of climbing around on the pile, finding just the right spot, making sure it's all balanced, etc.
By going to standard width bundles, now I know how it'll fit, I know exactly what's going in, and I can have a good count and BF on what's in the kiln. What used to take 10-12 hrs to "flip" the kiln now takes maybe 2 hrs, and that's if I'm moving slow. I try to already have the bundles strapped and staged in the order they go in, so then it's just a matter of stacking them on the trolley. I do have to be careful with balance on the trolley due to it's narrow wheel base. If I stack all the way up on one side it will fall over. So I have to set both bottom bundles, then stack up from there, keeping relatively even as I do.
Hands down, using the bundles as I have been for several months now, is absolutely the fastest.
