In our discussion on Childish Gambino's "This Is America" discussion, we had a lengthy debate around a tweet Open Mike Eagle had on Twitter. Mike Eagle hit us up and wanted to come on the show to clarify his comments. Here is that discussion with Open Mike Eagle, one of the dopest emcees in the game.

i also think a lot of the responsibility of "guiding the conversation" falls on platforms such as DEHH with intellectual and well informed hip hop fans. I dont think these conversations happen enough, and this conversation wouldnt happen at all if gambino just explained everything. Gambino leaving it up for interpretation allows for more organic opinions to be formed and a lot less forcing of ideas. Its gonna allow for opinions good , correct, or bad, to be heard and for the opportunity to build and or correct them. Great video yall!

Brizzy Danks theres only so much these platforms can do though. When an artists leaves his art up for interpretation, it leads to EVERYONE to take away their own viewpoints and messages from the work.

First off, thanks to DEHH. Both the original and the follow up videos are great. Brizzy I like your comment and the idea that leaving it for interpretation forces opinions good, bad or right-out-of-it. The idea of an organic experience is very compelling to me and has created some great discussions on a myriad of topics in the past. I love the idea of people taking away a personal truth from amorphous creations. However in this instance I feel myself agreeing more with Open Mike. Glover has created a high budget, high profile piece of art with a very distinct viewpoint and, arguably, message. With no context the conversation that follows invariably turns into a shouting match. And in a shouting match, the loudest voice wins. Mainstream media's framing of This Is America seems to be "It's gratuitous" or "It's harmless". They have the loudest voice, so they win. I think adding some context into the mix would settle things down and allow for real conversations to occur.

This was a part of the point I was trying to make on the previous video linked to this video. These sorts of pieces create dialogue that is necessary regardless of the emotion/PTSD/societal situation that exists. In fact, it can be even more necessary for controversial pieces like this to exist to create these very same dialogues which are constructive towards positive ends. Open Mike Eagle respectively states that we need platforms for these discussions. Yet, without Glover, this conversation wouldn't even exist. I take real issue with someone critiquing the legitimacy of an artist (Glover's intent for conscious expression) after admitting to their legitimacy through a different artistic medium. On one hand, Atlanta the show fulfills this requirement, but because his musical expression hasn't, he all of a sudden loses credibility? So, you're going to segregate his art, and in a way segregate the man into pieces? This seems a little absurd. Also, what's wrong with waiting until you have a massive platform to make this statement, as opposed to other artists who toil in obscurity never making a meaningful impact in the minds and lives of many. His show will live on forever in a way (visually) that is profound, and a lot of us are visual creatures. Open Mike thinks people need comfort, relief, and answers. Yes, yes they do. And clearly, what we have been doing as a "culture" hasn't adequately fulfilled these needs. And, how do you do that without collective dialogue, collective participation, a collective ideology, linked engagement that fulfills the ends that we need? You cannot. What you end up having is individuals trying to execute individually, and prominence attached to individuals as opposed to an overarching system. Open Mike states that without clarity, we end up in conversations that are not central to the conversation, or having no idea what the central conversation is. Maybe that's that point. To initiate a conversation that eventually evolves into something constructive. We as a "culture" cannot force artistic expression through a filtering process because it will stifle progress. Regardless of questioning someone's credibility. Forget a "case-by-case-" basis, because there may be someone out there who is legit, who has something great, but we end up watering it down. Open Mike harps on "Context" not explanation. But in a lot of cases, providing context provides explanation. If the pieces are there, and someone provides context, they put the pieces together. And that stifles the art itself, it limits the impact of that art. If I were an artist, I'd want a massive widespread impact. I'm OK with a lot of people not getting it, if it arrives at an end such as this. With chaos there is opportunity. All this stuff about the "Pandora's Box", the messenger changing the perception of the message etc, for me isn't particularly relevant because of the importance of having these intense conversations. The "system" is going to continue on the way it is, in fact, it may even think of new and creative ways to do "certain things". It is a necessity for these dialogues to happen, and quite frankly, outside of extreme situations, I welcome outlandish artistic expressions if it accomplishes that end. Mike C-Town says something about Glover wanting his work to be infamous, or take on this infamous quality. Absolutely, I think in some respects most artists want their work to be infamous, and the motives are based on the individual artist. But, when amidst the chaos, sane minded individuals emerge as a voice of clarity. And so, despite what his intentions may be, this is a good result. Because highlighting issues keeps them relevant. And, based on what many say about Atlanta, that relieves issues about the intent of his infamy to some extent. There's a lot to unpack from this discussion, but I think it's vital to not stifle expression, or sanitize expression, or translate expression, because there are a lot of people who, conceptually may not even be able to exist without that. And dialogue often cannot exist without it. Think of all the people doing positive work out there who cannot achieve this end, and they're doing it with transparency.
@GaZaRaVe
@GaZaRaVe 6 лет назад
Aaron C but at the end of it all he's definitely right about having a clear intent specifically for these kinds of issues.. these are serious issues that he's addressing yet people are making memes out of it... parody etc.... rather than us discussing the issues... the confusion leads more to a conversation about the actual video which is perfect for a piece like because the internet... but it's different for shit like " the blacker the berry" , " be free" & " this is america" because these are real people and issues we're talking about
@aaron5049
@aaron5049 6 лет назад
I agree that these are real people, and these are serious issues. I hope I didn't come across as disrespectful. But, how many songs, shows, so on and so forth have been direct, and obvious, yet fail to create any sort of sustainable dialogue, or sustainable agenda. I'm not saying that there aren't real people making a difference out there, but at the same time, the type of traction and cohesiveness that's required hasn't been developed yet in my opinion. And so, until that happens, I don't think we can just summarily write it off because it causes people to feel a particular way. Every time a man gets shot on TV, they relive it anyways. It becomes a running loop on the internet. They cannot cut that off any quicker than that video, and those men getting brutalized repeatedly is actually real. It's going to be a continual cycle anyways, sadly. These sorts of situations have been happening forever and a day. If an internal uproar gets us there, then that's what needs to happen IMO. The type of conditions being endured required serious philosophical dialogue, formulation and implementation. I don't think it's outlandish to say that what has been going on for the last 50 plus years has been a massive failure. And to say, well, lets just throw on some Talib Kweli (no disrespect to Talib, I enjoy his art) and it's going to make it all better, or, that's the "proper" way to address things. Let's live in this "comfort zone", despite being made uncomfortable collectively on a daily basis. I think people need to feel uncomfortable within the group, they need to feel the need to speak, they need to feel the need to say to their brothers that collectively we need to come to some sort of conclusions that address things in a way that we haven't considered. There are too many zombies just moving about, a guy gets gunned down and they become numb to it. No matter who the shooter is. Or, any other situation that occurs in relation to the group. There are too many fractured units with outlandish philosophies that will not result to anything. All of that needs to change. There needs to be a space for multiple forms of thought and expression.

I didn’t agree with Mike Eagle initially but now I see his point. When an artist puts something out like that, the message does get muddied. Even if I get the general overview, I still think certain things about certain images that the original creator did not mean at all. And nothing gets done because we don’t know what he really meant and so we just keep arguing in circles instead of dealing with what he was talking about in a real, tangible way. I don’t think he needs to explain everything or that he needed to do it immediately after the video dropped, but I do think that some sort of context could be given to spark discussion about the issues themselves and not just how the video portrayed said issues. Like with the show 13 Reasons Why, they provide a special afterwards and do countless interviews explaining where they are coming from so people don’t get the wrong idea, even if they disagree. Anyways, awesome that you got ME on the show and props for another great video 👍🏻

I think the fact that the video is being satirized further solidifies the point that the creators were trying to communicate. Just like how the dancing in the video is used as a tool to distract the audience from the shit going on in the background, the memes and remakes are the real life equivalent of the dancing. People are choosing to ignore or don't understand the issues raised in the video. It's ironic and sad af, and I'm sure Donald with his experience in writing and film making, knows what kind of reaction he will get from his audience. Also, maybe the creators don't have any answers to the issues and questions they raise, who really does? They've chosen to express what they experience and feel, and I think the video succeeds in portraying something that a lot of people have been feeling and living.

im only 6 mins in but i wanna put this out there, maybe letting the art speak for itself and not clarifying the message will make the conversation about the issues brought up last longer. for example if glover had explained every detail and message in the video then would yall or even anyone still be talking about it 3 weeks later? im not saying i agree with what glover is doing by offering no explanation but maybe he refuses to explain the video is because he feels that is the way the conversation about the art and message will last longer. imo you will think a lot longer about a "muddy" message than you will a clear one

I get that there's a need for some guidance for most people, but in general I think it's more compelling if the artist intended for it to be vague, and deliberately allows the conversation to be whatever it is to the masses. In some cases you need perfect explanations, like in journalism or a textbook, etc. But if an artist wants to enjoy the conversation from the sidelines, let them do it. I know there's flaws in that too, but there's flaws in everything.

The art is the conversation. Artists don't need to make any further comments. Most pieces are more powerful when left open ended because it forces people to think on their own. Imagine if Glover did an interview with vice or something about the meaning of his video. Everyone would watch the music video, feel confused, then immediately look up the explanation.
@andreisidro6544
@andreisidro6544 6 лет назад
The fact that, as of now, different people react differently to the video and every interpretation is as valid as the next one is what keeps the conversation going. As soon as Gambino explains his intent, the conversation stops and Gambino just turns into another musician preaching social ideologies.

There’s no need for gambino to explain. I think personally he’s trying to get people to think for themselves instead of holding everyone’s hands step by step. Because anyone can tell you what’s going on but unless some people experience it they’ll still be left in the dark. Regardless this video has sparked a lot of conversations around the topic which I think helps people realize the bigger picture all on their own. The only thing gambino tells you really is that this is America and you can interpret it however you want.

Every time there is a discussion about an issue she posts a video saying the offensive opinion to get attention. When body positivity was a big thing she did the dear fat people video. Then came the dear black people video. So I think people should just stop giving her the attention she doesn't even deserve.

Gambino is not gonna explain and personally I don't think he shouldn't explain it. Art is better when you come up with your own interpretation it's more fun and it opens up great discussions and people come up with theories you would've never thought of if the artist explained it outright. It gives the listener power and it's plan fun so many threads and think pieces why ruin that?

I wouldn't attack Glover because really, he's trying to do interesting stuff (compared to the average artist). I think Glover uses musical tropes and clichés and is being subversive but with just enough explicit lyrics in any project to taint what the rest is about. The art surrounding his music for the last album (for example the VR piece accompanying the last album) functions conceptually, like a corridor that makes the lyrics more obvious, even when they are silly. So I expect the next Glover album to make it more obvious what his art is about which most people have a good clue anyway. My take on This Is America is that it's about systemic racism including the consequences of that within the american black community, but the Charleston scene is a bit problematic because I don't think that the shooting is related to systemic racism, and this is the confusing part that the video/song could be about gun violence overall in America, but again it seems to pinpoint more on violence as a result of systemic racism (white on black violence + black on black violence). Anyway I don't ask Glover to be perfect, that piece is way above average in quality even though (and this is not the first time for Glover) the song really depends on the context of the visuals and other things surrounding it (in other words: he is the perfect guy to write a song for a movie).

A Conversation United people. Donald Glover dropped a piece of Performance Art. Without explaining people were already hating on both sides. One side he’s too black the other side he isn’t black enough. So what do y’all want from him? He’s done more for this culture in a 5min video. And y’all are hating? Why? Instead of saying negative things about a Video that’s suppose to start conversation, y’all want him to end it? If he came out and said this Is a Political Stance..... this video would be talked about for two days bc the think videos and conversations end bc there is no room for interpretation.

An artist owes you nothing. You're given the art--a special gift--but for you it's not enough. You have to know everything. You have to know about the wrapping, the bow, and the box the gift came in. You want all the answers spoon-fed to you. Use your minds and let others use theirs . . . You talk about something being "too open for interpretation" like it's a bad thing. It's nonsense. It's backwards. It's selfish. You want control. You want answers. You want everything. But, the artist owes you nothing, despite how you feel.

I think Donald knew it was going to be made into memes while making it. Hence ‘this is America’ cause serious issues always get turned into jokes.

Let's say Donald Glover came out and said that he wanted people to take this video seriously and that he didn't want people to make memes of it, do y'all really think that people would respect his wishes? I only ask because people love to do the exact opposite of what you want them to do. Would it make a difference or would he just be wasting his time?

They arent saying he should/should have come out and tell people not to do that. Theyre simply saying itd be beneficial for him to guide the convo - not explain every detail, just to guide the convo

ChrisJ Fox yeah exactly... here's the thing.. certain people are gonna make memes... they're allowed to do that... but within the context of " the conversation ".... there needs to be someone leading and giving a clear idea as to what that conversation is actually supposed to be about... having a clear indication as to what this is would help to avoid people trying to hijack it...

I understand the concerns that Mike Eagle is saying, but it makes me wonder, don't most creatives hate being told HOW to convey their art? Yes context is very important but if being that cynical and nit picky about provocative art bothers you, then that's a YOU problem in my opinion. Gambino doesn't owe anyone an explanation of context about his art if that wasn't his vision for the video. Remember, the beauty behind art is simply your interpretation of it. It's to simply start the conversation and maybe...just maybe that's all Gambino wanted. Maybe that was the impact that he envisioned from the beginning

This is the one DEHH conversation I disagree with 100%. I don’t think Donald Glover should have to explain his art at all. The fact that people take the video seriously and have their own interpretation to it is very important to a video like this. Childish gambino coming out with a explanation would only limit what other people could interpret as. There’s so much in the video to interpret for yourself childish gambino probably wouldn’t mention everything that was in the video as he would intend to do so that would be counterproductive on his part. As for other people making memes of this.... people we’re going to do this regardless and if you honestly think Donald Glover stepping in to explain would stop or limit the memes let me remind y’all of harambe... trust me I’m upset that a lot of people are doing the meme thing but that only gives the video more popularity to be completely honest. The video is for dialogue not to spread a message. This is America is your interpretation.

Why can’t good or bad opinions be heard anymore? I’d rather have a natural, open and honest conversation with our own thoughts and interpretations rather than borrowing the argument that the artist made.

Did you watch the video? OME specifically said he isn't suggesting that Gambino should explain the details, just guide the conversation. Guiding the convo is not the same thing as explaining the video/art
@chrisjfox8715
@chrisjfox8715 6 лет назад
The example he gave about Beyonce's Lemonade was pretty perfect. Best I know, Bey never once came out and explained various lines from those songs but the mere context of her life being known was enough to anchor things. She didn't have to explain her art, and neither does Glover

ChrisJ Fox the conversation doesn’t need to be guided by cb that’s the point. People were discussing and still are about the video. His point was unnecessary though in reality. But thank you for trying to say I didn’t watch the video.

I disagree that it is better for Donald Glover to come out and "clarify" his art because by doing that one immediately renders the art powerless. The beauty of art lies in interpretation. By denying this to the observer you have destroyed the potency of it. We as observers have our own power that we can read into and imbue in the art. We can ascribe meaning through observation. Like Mike says, leaving something to interpretation allows people to put into the art whatever they see or feel. And these interpretations tell us about the observer and the society. The video isn't"muddy" from my perspective, but a mirror that reflects the observer. Donald Glover giving an explanation would shatter this mirror and any visage that has been conjured by any given observer. Good art, to me, is meant to be interpreted in many many different ways. The memification does little to render the art powerless--in fact, that empowers it because it engenders discussion and new perspective. Art is powerful when left to the interpretations of the people because art is for the people--all people. To condense it down to a single interpretation--or a single direction as Mike suggests--only, from my point of view, saps the power, the artistry, out of it. It would be less art and more of an essay at that point. That's fine, if Donald Glover wants to do that, but I'd find it hard to call it art proper.

walls.beats I agree! Why should Childish Gambino waste his time explaining his art and message for/to people that are closed mind and mocking/"mudding" his message. It's not that they don't understand.. it's that they don't care.

Memes are always gonna happen, I don’t think they’re being made because people don’t understand the video, it’s just the way people are online. Doesn’t necessarily make them bad for making memes, it’s just how we focus on things; we relate more to humour. It’s ironic though because the video comments on how people take their focus away from important things and then in real life we have people making memes out of the video which takes the focus away from important things going on in the video.

I'm pausing before watching the video but on Twitter Mike Eagle says something about some interpretations of art being more correct than others. That is absolutely wrong. What he really means is that they are "interpretations" of art that are closer to the artist's "intention" (or own interpretation) of his/her/their work. But any interpretation of any work of art is valid. Art is free, it's a work of the mind and depends always on a personal perspective and context.
