Dirt, disease and death were everywhere in London's foul and stinking slums in the 19th Century and yet also close to Victorian London's government, abbey, huge wealth, grand terraces and palace-like houses. Find out how cholera and disease took hold of Victorian London's West End slums in Westminster at a time when bad air was feared more than bad water in this account by a contemporary journalist.

Maybe those in power, including those who are rich beyond their means, SHOULD be subjected to live in squalid conditions for a year. During this time, they cannot order “fancy” meals, have their clothes dry cleaned, be allowed to call an Uber, or any of the amenities that they have been accustomed to, and let’s see how fast they clean up their districts, renovate boarded up and abandoned buildings, collect the garbage that’s spilled all over the place, open up free medical clinics, and get much tougher on all forms of crimes. These politicians reside in guarded and gated communities, and they honestly don’t care about those living in slum areas, living in areas that look like landfills ( smell like landfills also ), not having access to medical care, or knowing if they’re going going to survive the night due to violent crimes. I’m so sick of these politicians claiming that they care, promising to clean up their neighborhoods, promising to get tough on crimes, promising to bring jobs to their communities, and the list goes on and on; then, once they get into office, they do NOTHING that they promised their constituents. Yet, these same constituents continue to vote for the same political party that continues to screw them over. However, I’ve been seeing these constituents waking up, and jumping to the other political party. God help us all! May God show His Mercy on us!!

@@Infirito_EkraRead OP's other posts on this channel. She was definitely referring to the 'dems' as the bad guys here. I must've missed that time when Trump improved the lives of the poorest of society..
@Marlaina
@Marlaina Год назад
@@coconutsmarties Evidence shows that dem run cities are by far more poor, crime ridden, and run by corrupt politicians. This was happening long before Trump came into power and is getting worse in recent time with the rich and middle classes fleeing the states altogether for Texas and Florida which are, oddly enough, republican run. With the dems so vocal about racial issues and fairness across the board it makes me wonder why their voters defend their politicians who cause problems for the minorities and poor of their jurisdictions. Hypocrisy as its best.

I have said this for years. Let the rich and especially super generational rich spend 3 months on the streets. A year if they have taken advantage of others misfortune or the law, to keep that wealth. Open their eyes to what they are oblivious to

Like you, I find the discrepancies between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ quite appalling! Those poor children had little to no hope of escaping the putrid alleyways and sodden drunks bewailing their lot. Women could marry up and thereby rise above her probable sorry state. But she would need her wits, determination, thick skin and, importantly to retain her virginity!

Just like today, there must have been many MPs in Parliament just feathering their own nests. Anyone in Parliament for the common good must have been small in number. Was there a Minister of Works who had the power to condemn lodgings, quickly demolish the slums, and carry out new builds with a view to social housing, such that previous residents were given first choice of these new builds?

@elizabthharris6741 10 месяцев назад
No money to even buy what they did have, which was condoms and surgery wasn't really much of a thing. So hysterectomies or tubes tied or vasectomies were years down the line. There was nothing but abstinence and that wasn't likely as a married woman unless you wanted to end up in an asylum or dead or penniless on the streets with even less. At least with a husband you had a chance to survive, cause his rights gave you options

Last part of my research cause of cholera outbreak in London soho district because of contaminated water from broad street pump . There were 23 , 000 deaths for all of Great Britain in 1853- 1854. Soho London killed 127 people in three days and in 616 within month . Cholera called blue death as dehydration lacked body , blood would begin to thicken in patients,veins , starved of oxygen their skin would turn sickly shade of blue . Majority of London homes were built without flush toliet. It’s really misery in victorian . We too in Arabic countries especially gulf areas in 1930s Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain have small pox as pandemic many died or have scars on their faces lost their eyes from that infectious disease. Plague was global pandemic as I heard from my mother told me from her grandmother and numerous people died from that pandemic. Good luck to you your dearest ones .

How are you doing sir thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary . Unfortunately recently we have increasing of COVID-19 patients . Many people thought that pandemic is over but the truth this infectious disease is still . We must be carful don’t kiss or handshake with anyone. As always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it slums is housing often by ( unsafe , unhealthy homes , lack of windows, dirt floor , leaking walls and roofs ) . Imean still exists . Slums were overcrowded, limited or no access to basic services, water , toliets , electricity, transportation. Infested means fest to spread or swarm in or over in troublesome manner . Actually several isolated cases of cholera occurred on m London in 1852 . It was not however until 1853 that was officially announced by British authorities that cholera epidemic was claimed victims not only in London but also in other parts of country.
