Ekta Patel is a scientist and the One Health Communications Coordinator at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) based in Nairobi, Kenya. Her research focuses on the wildlife-livestock ecosystem, particularly in relation to zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance. Led by ILRI, she conducted a study on the disease risks associated with wildmeat at the Kenya-Tanzania border. Their findings revealed many things but interesting were differences in conservation awareness between respondents on the Kenyan and Tanzanian sides. Notably, Kenyan respondents acknowledged the importance of conservation more than their Tanzanian counterparts, potentially due to differing legislative practices-illegal in Kenya and semi- legal in Tanzania.
