I've always wanted to play one of them but I'm not sure where to start. Do they have a story order or can they be played individually without worrying to be lost in the story?
As it's hard to take the step back from D5/D4 to D1, I'd say both D5 or D4 would do best for starting off with the series. Of course Disgaea in handheld is glorious, I have put countless hours into D5 and I finished D1 as well, can't wait to play D4 when I get the time. Taking advantage of the game's systems is the name of the game, so keep that in mind when starting off. Have fun!
Easily my all time favorite in the series. The dynamic between the characters and their designs is the strongest of the titles, and it had some solid, refined game play that improved on what was established in past titles.
i never understood how people have time for this series. every weapon has 100 dungeons, most maps are not small, and recruiting all the enemies is crazy addictive. so many games, so few days.
Disgaea 3 was my first game in the series. I remember playing disgaea 4 on Ps3 I enjoyed the visuals, all the different attacks and classes and the crazy story. These games are great for taking on the go. Great job, guys 👍🏼
I feel like 5 had more memorable main characters but D4 was my first that I played and its definitely overwhelming at first but once you get in that groove it's a great time. Well said Glen about everything, I'm mostly excited to play this on the go.
Kind of reminds me of a mix of Shin Megami, Fire Emblem, Persona, and Xcom. All fantastic game series. Thanks for the detailed review. May have to spend more money this month.
D5 was the 2nd game I got for switch and I put like 200 hours into it and loved it so yea I'm getting this one lol...its a game that can take awhile to grasp all you can do but if you like leveling up everything and anything this game has you covered
I've already played Disgaea 5 and have now started 4. I'm finding the step backward to be rather jarring, so I can't say I recommend starting with the most recent one if you plan to play the others.
Nice review. Disgaea can be very overwhelming indeed. I think 4 clamps a bit too much of it's mechanics on top of each other, specially with the Cam-Pain. It's fun when you get everything to work, but goddamn, sometimes organizing all the Evil Sybols, Deputy positioning, Cabinet Members, Cheat Shop, Equipment, Active and Passive skills, takes a lot longer than the combat. Anyway, a few things to add on your review: - 2:23 Team Attacks can only be performed with a 1 range attack. - 3:33 Yes, lifting and throwing were around since the first game. It functions simillar to Magichange where everyone on the tower gets an equal portion of EXP and Mana when they kill a unit. Also, there's a glitch in all games except 5 (and D2? Never played that one) that if you switch directions and press the "Throw" button while the cursor is moving you can throw in diagonals. Not very easy to be precise, nor is required to beat the game, but can save some time. - 4:46 You can't skip Magichange and Fusion animations after they begin, but if you hold ZR before selecting any of those actions(aka Switch's R2) it'll skip automatically. Holding ZR skips every animation, as long as you've seen them once in your playthrough. You can also hold B to speed up animations, though like pressing X, it doesn't work with Magichange and Fusion. - 5:50 I'm not sure if you can unlock more slots, but humanoid characters have 1 unique Evility and 1 empty Evility Slot, while monster characters have 1 Unique and 2 Empty Slots. By the way, Magichange only gives the monster's Unique Evility to it's holder, not the full package unfortunately. Again, very nice and easy to digest video. Just trying to help.
Glad I watched this review! It's been a while since I played Disgaea, and I've only played 1 and got to try 2 a bit. I'm still on the fence about buying 4 on Switch (not interested in 5 at the moment, 4 initially caught my attention since one of my fave voice actors is in it...) but this review makes me a bit more convinced to buy it. Being able to see 4's new features in action in this video review helps! I'll probably finally buy it if I end up liking the demo...
The mechanics reminded me of Yggdra Union. Tbh, they have few things alike but the quite confusing game mechanics made me remember that. Cheers! I don't like the gameplay so I can only watch this.
I had Disgaea 5, but I got so overwhelmed by all the content I just stopped/. even though I really wanted to get invested in it. This looks good, but I'll pass and focus on 5
Hmm interesting stuff Glen, never played Disgea before but heard about it for a while. Problem with NIS America like many games is high price. I presume no demo as well?
I think this series is great. I loved Disgaea 5 and I like that NIS America is porting 1 and 4 for the Switch. I'd love to see 2, 3 and D2 in the future.
I love this series, been playing them all since the original came out on ps2. 1 will always be my favorite, still has the best characters to me. 5 is my favorite to play though with the quality of life improvements compared to 1. 4 felt the weakest of the series, plot seemed a bit less interesting and shorter, but still a very fun game.
Still waiting for my favorite to come to switch 3 introduced me to the series and for me mao was the only likable and interesting protagonist to me i got this yesterday on sell since i needed my disgaea fix after getting sick of disgaea rpgs limits and this was the next best thing to 3 since it has AoDs two new vita chars lol
I personally feel that 5 has better gameplay and tutorials, but 4 has better characters and story. I’d say the gameplay of 5 is 5/5 and the story is 3/5, and for 4 I’d say the gameplay and story are both 4/5. But I’m just a random guy on the internet and this comment is 10 months old so I’m sure you made the choice already.
I’ve never been a fan of turn based games, but lately I’ve bought Octopath and Ni No Kuni. I’ve yet to play either of them, but look forward to getting to the. I definitely enjoy the artwork in this game, but will have to wait to see if I enjoy turn based. The zooming in and out seems like it would get on my nerves. Also appears daunting to pick this game up and just play.
Well I'm just glad we're getting remakes. Also the stories are not related so it doesn't matter. We already have a remake of the 1st, 4th and 5th witch I think are the best ones with over 100hrs of game play each. So I'm happy! :D
They were at one point :P But ya, it's been very weird for the switch ports. Hopeing for 2 and 3 as well, wont be surprised if we get phantom brave and la pucelle as well
I bought discaea 5 some time ago on the switch and had a blast playing it. The story was of course horrible but the gameplay was really fun and addictive.
This is a video explaining the game's mechanics. How is this a review. This is the kind of video that the game's publisher would post for people to be introduced to the game.
GAAAH NO ONE GETS THIS RIGHT! PRINNY RULE NUMBER YOU SHALL ALWAYS INCLUDE THE WORD "DOOD" IN EVERY LINE YOU SAY NOWHERE IN THE RULE DOES IT SAY IT NEEDS TO BE AT THE END OF THE SENTENCE THEREFORE THE SCENTENCE "DOOD IM TIRED" IS JUST AS PRINITICALY CORRECT AS THE SCENTENCE "IM TIRED DOOD" AND A SENTENCE LIKE NO WAY DOOD YOU SAID YOU WOULD GIVE ME SARDINES" WORKS
Well, I guess if you don't find using your brain to be engaging and fun, then they won't be fun. Disgaea takes a little effort to learn how to play the first time, but then it's pretty easy. The games are nuanced. However, there are children who can figure them out. At least half the appeal of Disgaea for me is in the dialogue and zaniness of the characters and plot. Not even close to imitated in any other game franchise.
Wierd release order of games, reminds me of some rpgs that I've played in my dsi, at least to me just with the review you do feel the age in the game, not a horrible thing, but noticeable, said that, it does have a creative battle system, and a somewhat interesting story, ok... Maybe the content is worth it, happy gaming :)
SwitchUp I was hoping that after D1 Complete they will do D2 complete but they did D4 complete+ instead. I hope D2 and D3 will be remastered next after D4 bro
1, 4, 5 is not the actual release order. Disgaea released first on PS2 (the "Disgaea 1" now ported to Switch). Disgaea 2 followed on PS2. 3 and 4 came on PS3. And now 5 has been released on PS4/Switch, along with ports of 1 and 4, which were already released before. So the "release order" has been quite normal. The "port order" has been selective.
