"Freedom is not as bad as game designers have come to think it is". Can someone remind Bungie of this, please? And while they're at it, remind Blizzard as well.
Yeah definetly, the new expansion of wow BFA sucks, no one is happy about it, and lets not mention the rage of diablo fans when they released the new diablo on mobile, is that how they treat their fans? they sell them for chinese market? shame on activision
Blizzard can go to hell. It is always one step forward and 2 steps back with them. If they add someone new, they often remove it in a future expansion. Things such as the original skill trees, many skills, many fun items, many fun skills such as blink and Alter Time have been heavily nerfed, glyphs and the entire inscription profession were removed, etc. Blizzard is a very regressive company.
Disgaea 4 had a bug that let you dupe items by making clones of yourself drop items using the puppy paw stick, which would make enemies randomly drop one of their equipped items. Normally, you can't steal items from clones, but due to an oversight, the puppy paw stick ignored that restriction, so you could freely dupe your most powerful items without limit. The devs didn't patch it out of the game when they found out, because Disgaea is all about abusing the game's systems to gain an unfair advantage.
the much easier version of the same thing is to use the bio-suit class, which has a skill that turns them into neutral units, and since they're no longer party members the puppy paw stick works on them now.
I played the first one to death on the PS2 and it was insane even then. One point in the story Laharl comes up with an evil plan to make a video game so addictive that nobody would ever get sleep and go nuts, i looked at the clock and it was 3am and i was gettin up for school in a few hours lol
Disgaea seems to do the impossible by making it fun to grind. Literally half the content in the game is some form of grinding, and watching stats go up from the tens to the thousands to the millions is absurdly satisfying. If you're on the fence about it, there's a free demo available, and your progress from it carries over to the main game. If you find yourself spending hours in the demo, Disgaea 5 is definitely for you.
Memento Mori i remember the demo. i grinded enough to outlevel the entire story mode with no stronger bills passed. ive been playing since the original and i adore this series.
The Disgaea series is a like an inverted onion, every sequel adds to the one before it. It's what keeps you buying them. I wish other game franchises were more like that.
Other franchises are content to cut features with each iteration (Mass Effect). Some go a step further and sell the cut features back to you as DLC (The Sims)
I had a fun time playing through Disgaea 2's story, but I stopped once the campaign ended. My sister, on the other hand, spent a frightening amount of time (200+ hours, iirc) grinding item worlds and trying to get certain bosses and high-level pirate enemies to appear in them.
@@whym6438 I can relate to her, after LA Pucelle Ragnarok (I will just count it as Disgaea 0 here), Disgaea 2 is the Disgaea part that I finished the most thouroughly and have the longest playtime with (Maybe Disgaea 1 as well since there was the least post game contest easy to finish without much grinding).
@@Jamessss1010 cos now Im playing Disgaea 1 on psp and i find it quite difficult i just wanted someone to hype me up about it cos i don’t really feel confident about finishing it lol
@@varyll8400 It is a funny game. With the item world you can get stronger and if you build up a super weapon you can use it to power up your other characters. I beat it and then played Disgaea 4 I could easily see the refinements that had been made and it felt good.
The Nerdiacs Podcast i dont even know if he talked avout magigchange fusion dual wielding, letting you dual wield 2 magichanged weapons of 2 fused monsters that result in gigantic weapons, even bigger than monster hunter weapons
x1000000. disgaea as a whole is just straight rediculous. this review explains it really well. the stories are quite humorous and doesn't end with the main story line. 9999 is NOT the max lvl and their are infinite amount of customizations .
Level up a sage class, reincarnate it at level 9999, and keep doing that. Start her at level 500, use her land decimator skill in the item world, keep doing this and you’ll have a super OP character.
Very late but this is true. Disgaea 5 is the SRPG genre perfected. Clean UI, funny as hell voice acting, 100 layer deep stat and combat system, near endless supply of new shit at all times, item world greatness, can create a bajillion different teams for a bajillion different situations, secrets, etc. The game is perfection
Only the enemy AI could really need some improvement, the enemies in all Disgaea games are dumber than the enemies of Tactics Ogre for the SNES used to be.
Getting to level 9,999 will get your attack stat up to about 200,000. That same stat caps out at 99 MILLION. There's a lot more work to be done after that.
I come back to this review every so often and it always reignites my love for this series. I show this review to anybody and everybody. Disgaea is crazy. And this review showcases that accurately. Fantastic.
I watched this video and despite never playing a Disgaea or tactical game, thought It sounded amazing, so I bought D5 from the E-Shop. Two hours later I am in love. Thank you Cool Ghosts.
DahGamePs4 Disgaea one probably it doesn’t have as many things to go through however Disgaea 5 has the most polish gameplay wise and in the systems but the first is the best to ease your way in.
the game eases you into each mechanic. and like they said you can just ignore a lot of mechanics until you're ready and decide you wanna check them out
I imagined what that would be like when he said that lol first it was just an upside down pencil, but then i thought of the graphite being on the outside and the wood being on the inside.
Midway through 5 as my first Disgaea and I went and started playing through 1 as well. I gotta say the story is wayyyy better in 1, as are the maps. The QoL improvements and customization in 5 are absolutely insane though and I love them both dearly now. I can't believe I didn't try this series sooner!
Disgaea 2, the last part on Steam is also great, and if you are into emulation I'd strongly suggest the series predecessor LA Pucelle, in the PSP port version La Pucelle Ragnarok (which had somegame plow pacing issues of the original version improved or removed, added characters, post game content and another story mode, but requires a fan-translation patch).
OMG I'm dying laughing. This video is amazing and actually manages to really explain what it's like to play a Disgaea game. Room mate: "Wait did that cat just turn into a sword and now you're hitting a giant moth with it???" Me: "Yeah, it's fine. don't worry about it"
Something possessed me to redownload disgaea out of the blue and start a new save file. I've been on a 48 hour binge and dindn't show up for work yesterday. Oh god, oh no, why?
I jumped into the video cause I saw the title and the duration, and I felt compelled by the idea of sawing talk about how much they love a JRPG I knew nothing about. The video was not what I was expecting but I did enjoy it quite a lot. Excellent pacing, as well as an informative video which really sells the game. I must confess I feel eager to try this game out, despite there's a really big chance I won't do it for long, just because it looks incredibly interesting.
just got this on the switch.....this is probably the most comprehensive review of this game on the planet...that's inside a cake....which is inside a gun...that's inside a game...that's on the switch
Good review...I feel less confused than I would if I'd just played the game myself but more confused than if I'd never heard of Disgaea and/or I'd had a mental emetic after I had
I put a few hundred hours into Disgaea 1/2 over PS/PSP/PS2 but don't have the time for that kind of commitment these days. I picked up Disgaea 5 to support the devs and only played through the story. Nice to see you dive into what makes it so great as there's no way I'll be able to explore it all myself!
I've been thinking about getting a Disgea since 4 on the vita (mainly because I was grasping for games to play on that dead system lel) but for whatever reason never got round to it. When I saw it's coming to switch I decided to do a bit more research into it. This video is what sold me the game. I'll be getting it with my first summer-internship-paycheck. Never seen any of your stuff before either, but I really enjoyed the video man. You just gained a sub
As a long time FE player I recently bought Disgaea 5 on Switch and feels very different from FE, but it is bonkers fun. Like the review says, the game is less about a driving story or balanced difficulty (both of which FE excel at), and more about crazy customization and going down any rabbit trail you feel like. It reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics where I spent 20+ extra hours unlocking Cloud as a bonus character and then re classing him to get the perfect balance of skills even though my main characters were already plenty strong to beat the game on their own.
Disgaea 5 has you play 4 different things -Current story maps -Past maps for grinding -Item World to power up items -Chara World to power up 1 character % stats in a board minigame You can level up all of this -Characters can go to 9999 -Each skill can go to lvl 99 -Weapon Mastery can go to level 100 (humanoids can equip about 10 different types and monsters 2 types) -Class mastery into 5 star rank, every character can rank up ALL 40 classes -Any item can level up (but don't remeber the cap now since you can get a damn lot of bonus) Other things you can do -Capture -> Interrogate Enemies -Send allies to invade other worlds while you do other things -Organize allies in squads -Power up squads -Manage item bonuses (innocents) by relocating, fusing and breeding -Experiment cooking curry -Level up customer ranks for better items -Reincarnate allies into different types to expand abilities How Disgaea 5 let's you cheat the system -You can have your non-reincarnated character change class to make him learn other classes passive skills (eviliies) -You can make scroll items to transfer evilities and skills from one character to another -You can cut animations and speed up all animation -You can arrange meetings to get extra stuff, get extra exp/mana on next map... and you can bride the people to win the meeting -You can use a CHEAT shop to change the percentage of Exp/Mana/Money/WeaponMastery/SkillExp to fit what you want to priorize With a bunch of other things to consider, this is a game that makes you work all around it's content to different types of powering up until the point you realize you focused a lot on 4 things only yo realize you need to focus on other 5 things instead. You will likely struggle to get used to mechanics until you reach a point where what you barely managed to do in 10 hours can now be done in 10 minutes because... yeah, Disgaea rewards you for grinding while also slapping all the hard effort you made before. Also, this game got Red Magnus
(Veteran Disgaea player here) The previous Disgaea's had better stories, so it's sadly a battle between older games having more interesting stories or newer games having more polish. My super-short overview. 1 is a classic; plus the "Horse Wiener" weapon 2 has the best story 3 has a school theme 4 has a political theme 5 is the biggest.
i agree. But what i liked in 2 is that you had actually made use of multipliers with elemental damage and actually use magichange for nuke the last uberbosses, while 5 is alot more easygoing, everything can get 40 milion at base and the rest can do with +% stats and perfecting the item. And well i love rozalin alot ;). Nice sum up of good disgaea series pluses anyway.
Eh. Disgaea 4 > Disgaea 2 story after all the DLC so you get the full picture. Disgaea 1 story is defintely inferior to Disgaea 2. People only praise it due to nostalgia. Disgaea 5 definitely had the weakest and most predictable story and very little humor.
Disgaea 2 for sure has the best story. Never was a fan of 4, it just paled in comparison to me. But if I'm going for gameplay, 5 blows everything out of the water. It's impossible for me to go back and play the older ones now.
I think you nailed it with the point about not playing D5 for the story. So many Disgaea purists call it the worst because of the story. That's not the main reason I play. I play because I get to play it my way.
TFW your Flonne (read: adorable chibi angel) yells out "WATAAAAA!" and whaps some poor penguin looking dummy for 1000 billion damage with a wooden staff. This game is everything.
My first one was Disgaea 4 it was a mindblowing videogame experience with and still one of my favorite series ever. I highly recommend not using any guides until post game. Its really rewarding learning new ways to cheese maps you were otherwise struggling with just trying different things to become more powerful.
Maybe I'm in the minority, I like the story. Disgaea's story are generally silly and over the top, and full of cliché's, but I rather enjoy them. There not Shakespeare, however the (main story)characters are generally likeable. It might not be the main reason many people play a Disgaea game, but story shouldn't be dismissed so quickly. Just my two cents : ).
listening to this I'm getting flashbacks of the rune factory for equipment upgrading system, where every item in the game is an upgrade material and every item has a rarity, a level, and an effect when used as a material, and you can nest equipment inside other equipment when crafting them. then there is skills for everything you do in the game, skills for every weapon, skill for every magic type, skill level for walking, throwing, eating, sleeping, bathing, etc. All of this with a max character level of 50,000... and ALSO having it's own version of cheats to modify the game in the form of orders. It sounds like Disgaea 5 and Rune Factory 4 are both candidates for games with the most modifiers or most insane loadout customization.
I played the demo to this game a couple years ago on PS4. Glad to see it on Switch and I actually managed to download it on Switch today instead of waiting until May (praise region-free). Liking it so far. It is overwhelming in terms of UI. So much to read and crammed on screen but you get used to it, oddly enough.
I love the story of the games because of the fact they are so weird. I actually play the games in part for the story. I got the PS3 and PS4 because that was what I needed for the next games play. The truely MAD thing to me is the number caps they have. so insanely high they feel infinitly far off; so I do not want to try to reach them.
I’ve played every disgaea installment ever and fell in love with the style. And realized that the company, Nippon Icchi Software does this very often. Try Makai Kingdom, Phantom Brave, and the Unlosing Ranger!!! All PS2 games! Nippon Icchi has been a gem all along!!!
1) As a long time SU&SD watcher, how did I not know about cool ghosts? 2) I recently grabbed this game on sale and have been diving in, and this is the most accurate review I have seen in a long time
Even after a year of the game being out, you should definitely get this game it's so fun, this review didn't even mention the world destroying super moves and the thrill that comes when you see higher lever enemies and the amounts of thinking to take them down by your main squad
The concept of this game sounds and looks so odd and interesting. I've never heard of this game, but after seeing you and other commenters so excited about it, it has been added to my list of games to play! :)
Just tried the demo on Switch, and now I've got the full game on order in the post ^^. There's something very strangely charming about it. Loved FF tactics, loved the fire emblem games, love JRPGs in general and love anime, I can't believe i hadn't discovered this franchise until now!
Disgaea is almost the perfect SRPG, gameplay wise. If only this has story depth as Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics this will be the greatest SRPG of all-time.
The way this game describes getting a character to recruit is a testament to this games depth for gameplay. There are so many demons out there, that it's impossible to not find a demon custom fit to your exact specifications, down to name, intelligence, and color/class. (And the story isn't as bad as he's making it out to be, but it certainly is no masterpiece. Maybe pay attention to it the first time through, but never again during any new game+ runs, which yes, are an option too.)
Just stumbled across this channel and vid while deciding on whether or not to guys this game - love the vid, keep making more reviews (I just subscribed) and I did indeed buy the game...
I played Disgaea 1 on DS long time before and was my fav SRPG Now I started Disgaea 5 one week ago, and waow. Best game i've ever seen, best world, best chara design, best mechanics, best end game IGN / 11
I bought Disgaea 5 on switch... by changing my profile to japan and buying the game there. It runs in english btw. And later I changed my profile back to the US
I loved the first one, didn't like the 2nd and haven't really looked at it since, but you make it sound like they nailed it again. Think I need to pick this up
I wish i could hear more review like this from you =(... this Review made me so interested that i liked past through your recent videos but there wasnt any Review for any game like this one
Storywise, not necessarily. Aside from references for some DLC/postgame unlockables, you're not missing much. If you're in for the grind, get 4 or 5; the quality of life and graphics are much better than the previous 2. I would recommend D2, but that's a direct sequel to the first so that one is better to play after playing through 1.
I played the first game when it originally came out. After playing my beloved FF tactics; I was looking for something similar. This game is a gem. Tactics Ogre is a very good game...but it's old. I'm getting Disgea 5 soon. It is a fun and cool game.😀
The only thing I have to say about disgaea is that it feels better. As a portable game, so I am happy disgaea 5 complete is on the Nintendo switch. I will be getting it in a few days. As it comes out, in a few days.
